No it's not dead imo, they're just advancing and going in a different direction then Baldurs Gate, because thats what Game Companys do. I wouldn't want to play the same game that's exactly like Baldurs gate with a different name.

No but instead you want to play the same game that is exactly like Mass Effect with a different name?

Yes Bioware is still alive and making money but the point I was trying to make is that they arent the company they were when they made the Baldur's Gate series, the old company died and the new one rose from its ashes. Perhaps I and those that share my point of view are in the minority and the majority of todays gamers prefer shallow action adventure titles, that is what I want to find out from this thread.

When people say, "Oh man, this is delicious; I could eat this every day for the rest of my life," it's nothing but hyperbole. Just like the idea of playing the same exact game over and over with slightly better graphics would bore you to tears, no matter how blisteringly brilliant the first (and "true") game was. Companies change. They grow and expand. Most people are willing to grow with them.

But if it were dead, what if Bioware would come...BACK TO LIFE?!?!

I imagine zombies in Bioware's future.

The "old" Bioware isn't dead.

You're referring to the "young" Bioware, who has since very simply, gotten older. Times change, but RPGs are still RPGs.

If this were a music forum, the term would be "selling out".

Wasn't Gandalf the same person that claimed everyone who liked dwarfs had a midget fetish and that is was as bad as necrophilia. I suggest ignoring him.

This.
People who say Bioware is dead, or sold out are just stuck in 1998. Plz get you asses into 2010. Things change and evolve, stop buying Bioware games, or Deal With It.

The BG series is at least a decade old.  Of course BioWare isn't the same as it was 10-12 years ago.  And of course BioWare isn't going to make games the same way they did 10-12 years ago.

Of course I know games have to change and evolve but why get rid of the things that were so great about their older games?

Very dramatic. Perhaps you should set out on a quest to avenge them.

Pfft. I've beaten Mass Effect atleast 20 times, maybe more. I have around 14-15 profiles that can be uploaded from my current harddrive with another 4-5 from my old 20g. Another 200 times seems like a good challenge!

((Five of those 20 are 100% complete))

DA2? You don't know if its anything like ME yet, you people need to stop jumping to those conclusions. The FIRST trailer comes out tommorow, wait until then.

I'm guessing you're one of the gamers who don't like the progression and change in the RPG genre.

No proper console RPG, no proper PC RPG, very much crap hybrid.

Because they don't need to make a clone of the same game for the rest of time?

So you rather Bioware not make any of their games for consoles, so they make much less money? Then that hurts their chances of making more games, or games with a much smaller budget?.....Yeah that makes a lot of sense.

Also isn't ME2 one of the top rated games to come out this year? As was Dragon Age last year?

Face it, the old school style of rpg's is dying fast.

You may still like them, and I'm not bashing you if you do. But its outdated, times change and things change with them.

Sure you could make a few mistakes trying to 'update' a genre (IMO Jade Empire was that mistake) but you cant make a masterpiece without making a few chunks of crap first, and if you can. Well you're really lucky...

So either face the change with hopes it'll be good, or remain a jaded old-school fan who whines about it on message boards (If so I should refer you to the gamefaqs board. Its full of complainers and nay-sayers.) I on the other hand look forward to DA2. And if its bad then its bad, if not. Then you should get off your old-school high horse and play it. Which I'm sure you all will.

Blame Anarya. She didn't help wrestle me from Varric's chest hair when I pleaded for help.

I'm very sorry. I do miss the beard, though. Maybe Varric will show you pity enough to give it back sometime.

I'm curious if someone would like to enlighten me as to what defines a RPG. Or are you guys talking about a Bioware RPG? Because that'd be a huge difference, I'm a pretty picky guy when it comes to games. But while being able to create any character you want is a nice a perk it doesn't decide whether a game is going to be good or bad or whether it's worth playing or not. I can't think of there ever being many games where you had as many starting points, (pay attention to starting point) as Origins. And I can think of less that allow you to so heavily customize the character and party to your choosing.

I asked what you're calling a RPG because I'm fairly new to the whole Bioware set up. When I think RPG's the first game that will come to mind for me is Legend of Dragoon which was a PS1 title. You didn't name the characters, you couldn't customize them, it was a turn base RPG. And yet the story was bar none one of the best if not the single best I've ever played.

The question I'd ask you, is what matters more? Being able to create a elf that looks epic and doesn't talk ever. Or Bioware creating a game that delivers a bigger impact story? I'm can't be sure but creating 6 different starting points had to limit what they could do, I'd hope and have by taking dialogue from 8 (female's difference in dialogue and interaction). And turning it to 3, (male, female, and mage). Then they could improve the rest of the game as whole. They might not, but I think a little restriction on creative freedom can be a good thing.
