Party stops fighting, cannot level up

Like the title says. This started in the Redcliffe invasion quest. For some reason, my party stopped engaging enemies, they don't react to them at all even if attacked and damaged themselves by the enemy. When I specifically order them to attack or cast a spell, they would all attack just once, or cast that one specific spell, and then stop again and just stand there and get killed.

Also I can't see their status by the portraits in the upper left corner anymore (as in "Attacking" / "Moving" etc.).

I tried making sure they weren't set to Hold Position and I even tried setting them all to Aggressive tactics, but still no go.

Also, during the Redcliffe invasion my entire party acquired enough XP to level up, but when I press the Level Up button (or the level up icon next to the portraits) nothing happens, and I cannot level up. This is a game-stopping problem for me, I can't keep playing if I can't level up!

Please help! D:

Check your tactics window-- in the bottom left make sure Disable Tactics isn't activated. Also when you're using your main to attack, you don't have your whole party selected, correct?

last question. You have the toolset installed?

Hey Caeg,

What happens when you load a saved game? Does the passive AI persist, or is it only happening during the Redcliffe attack? If it happens with your most recent saved game, give it a try with an older saved game and see if it still happens. Thanks!

As for the level up, if I remember correctly I believe your party remains in combat during the entire attack, does it not? If this is the case, then that is probably why you cannot level up (you can't level up while in combat). If you aren't in combat, it's possible whatever is causing your other issue has also had an affect on other game systems.

You're not alone. I had a very similar problem. I installed the toolset and I'm pretty sure that's when the problems started.

I don't know if this is part of the original problem, but it sounds very much like what I'm experiencing.

For me, when I try to give a gift to another NPC, cast a spell, level up, nothing happens. If I attack a mob, my party members only strike one blow. I can not use potions.

Reinstalling the game did not help. Reloading an older save game does not help, so this bug is game breaking for me.

This happened after installing the toolset.

Deleting the singleplayer directory in my documents > bioware > dragon age > modules should fix the level up bug. I can't believe BioWare would release a toolset that basically breaks their game by installing it.

Neither can I, but for me, that was more or less what happened. I still haven't reinstalled (a second time), so I can't say whether what you recommended works. I wiped everything I could find from bioware from my HD this second go (which includes my saved games).

Fix for strange issues with my game such as scripts not firing or party interactions not working and “Module will not load”

This is often caused by the Dragon Age Toolset. If you have the toolset installed and you’ve messed around with it (including beta versions), the toolset may be overriding the scripting of the single player experience. The fix:

1) Load toolset, goto tool > export > Empty Export Directories

2) FIND:

Windows XP: My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\modules

Windows Vista: Documents\\Bioware\\Dragon Age\\modules

*Delete the single player folder*

3) FIND:

Windows XP: My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\modules\\single player\\override

Windows Vista: Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\modules\\single player\\override

*Delete everything in this folder*

4) FIND:

Windows XP: My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\packages\\core\\override

Windows Vista: Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\packages\\core\\override

*Delete everything in this folder*

Deleting the above directory fixed my level up bug but I got stuck on the Tainted blood quest at the same time and now I can't complete the quest. I have all the quest items I need but the game still thinks I don't so I'm basically stuck in the game.

I did try to reload an older save from before I started the battle. I tried to redo the quest several times. (The quest itself was also bugged for me, as it continued on even after I'd slain the final zombie, or otherwise the militiaman not calling me down to the Chantry after the first few waves.)

Eventually I managed to finish the quest and moved on to the castle itself but the problems persist.

The characters don't respond to enemies at all, not drawing weapons when enemies are spotted nearby for instance. Also I can initiate conversations with party members even when the battle is going on right beside them. It's as if the game doesn't realize combat should start or is already ensuing.

I'll try these solutions, see if they work.

The sad thing is that a lot of people will lose their saves and other things over this. I thought starting up the toolset and answering "no" to every save question would be safe enough, but apparently not.

Flawless victory! Give this man a medal. This solved both problems for me, I can now level up normally and the party responds to enemies.

There are no lost saves from this method... it's something to be aware of, that's all... the toolset uses a SQL database and it constantly updates so accidentally altering the existing content can (and will) torque up your game to the point of unplayability
