From what we've heard conversations seem like they will be a lot more dynamic in DA2.

Yea, I was gonna try and compare him to others but I figured he would be new in a sense.


I get the feeling he'll be rather apathetic really, seeming like your only a 'thing' to him. Until you break his shell and see he's really like the way you described him.

I think that was the "caution to the wind" line? He usually looks slightly off camera, for me.

See, I'm not immutable to the idea. As I said, if his personality (and VOICE) is good enough, of course I'll love him. But it's more like a hurdle than anything else. I'd also prefer for him to be human, but whatever. If I can love a lizard man with a sexy enough voice, it's not impossible for me to warm up to Varric.

I'm trying to think of a character in any fiction who is like what I think Varric would be as a LI but I'm drawing a blank. I know I've seen some but I can't come up with any.

I'm not too fond of his in-game looks currently (though he looked better at PAX), but I think my impression of his personality makes me interested in a LI with that sort of personality going. I think it'd be fun. Whether that turns out to be Varric or not I guess we'll see, but if it isn't I hope we get someone similar in the future.

From what we've heard of his voice, all we've got is "deep" and sort of "scratchy." And he's not voiced by Steve Blum. So far, that's all we know.  Hopefully they'll deign us worthy to hear him sometime soon.

Hm, I find Thane pretty repulsive to look at (lizard grasshopper) but haven't gotten far enough to know him well. Different strokes, I guess. But just by looks? Ehh.

EDIT: I mean, I guess where Saibh is coming from, but I don't necessarily see how loving Space Lizard is easier than Short Hairy Man on a purely aesthetic level.

Hey, I absolutely destested fantasy Dwarves of all kinds until I played the Dawrf Noble Origin and got Oghren.

So its possible.

(Btw even though the human nobles my fav the Dwarf Noble was by far the most epic.)

Yeah I find it amusing more people seem to have a problem with the idea of romancing a Dwarf than a Lizard Man.

Varric sort of makes me think Lando Calrissian, but with a bit of something/one else I can't put my finger on just now. Thinking back to Aimo's picture, it might be James Ford (Sawyer) from Lost actually.

@Jarek: The Dwarf noble origin is awesome, my first played and still my favourite.

Oh, sure, he's disgusting to look at. However, I always operate on a "They're all pixels anyway" basis. If it were live-action, I'd be absolutely repulsed. Since none of them are real, their appearance matters less to me. As such, voice is paramount, as is personality. And I just love his personality. My heart just breaks if you break off his romance. Could do without the full-on Carth syndrome, but that should tell you how much I adore his character that I am capable of liking him despite it.

Which is why I said, if I can love him, Varric might be possible. Maybe. Eh.

Thane just looks so...inhuman that his appearance is rather meaningless to me. Varric does look human, and is more comparable to them.

Well, the "not Steve Blum" is certainly a plus. He's a great voice actor, but he's almost always Steve Blum as... to me. Especially when he goes for the grit.

I thought he was pretty weird-looking at first but he won me over. He's pretty charming. I'm a sucker for a woobie though. 

Anyway all of the LIs are mostly about personality to me since I haven't seen a single model yet that blew me away on looks alone (they all magically appear more attractive to me when I get to know them). Maybe this will change with the new art style, who knows?

Good thing that Varric survives to tell Hawke's tale or else I'd believe he'd die somewhere in the game, I just hope though the game doesn't pull off the ending it's based off of.

Yeah, that's what I've been saying. Like I said, Thane and Garrus are so inhuman that I don't find myself comparing them to human looks. Varric does look human, so it's far easier to compare him to a human and see a hairy gorilla child. It's possible for me to love him--hey, maybe in a few months I'll be burying my head in the sand out of shame for saying all this because I love him so much--but from what we know right now, I'm not feeling it. No one mention Harbinger.

Lol, yeah. I mean, Alistair is my favorite but when I first saw him I was like "Who is this frat boy?" and thought he was gonna be a total douche. Sorry, dude.
