I hope the amount of info we are getting now doesn't lead to a dry spell of Varric info in the future.

Whyyyyyy wasn't I here to be all excited about this information ten hours ago!? I don't need sleep! Why did I sleep!? Ahem. Anyway. This makes him sound... even more awesome than I originally expected. Thank you, Queen Mary (the relatively good and not evil, killer-of-many Queen Mary), we all appreciate the snippets you give us so much! Soawesome!Mary Kirby wrote...
Varric has... well, he wouldn't call them minions. He'd say "contacts." or "People." He's the younger son in the Tethras family: His older brother is the head of the family and runs what could be called a small financial empire. They don't have a shop. They invest in shops. Officially, Varric is an idle younger brother in a wealthy household who spends most of his time hanging out in taverns telling wild stories while other people buy him drinks. Unofficially, he maintains a spy network with contacts throughout all levels of the city so he can quietly deal with the assassination attemps, scandals, and campaigns of industrial espionage that come along with being a family in the Dwarven Merchants Guild.

Why not for both genders? I know at least one of my FemHawke's is going to be rabidly protective of her sister regardless of how said sister's personality pans out. So she simply won't be able to stand the thought of someone like Varric toying with her sister's feelings without showing serious signs of commitment. In her own words "either he gets down on one knee and proposes, or I'll personally see to it that he will promptly lose the ability to reproduce his own spawn. No exceptions."Xewaka wrote...

Never mess with a protective sibling with a pechant for throwing fire balls and/or sharp pointy objects. It never ends well.
It would be hilarious to watch though from a player's point of view though, I will admit.

If Bethany wants to enjoy the paradise that is Varric, then I won't stop her. Of course there could be a little sibling rivalry between my fem Hawke and Bethany, which I am sure Varric would love.
Like I said in another thread: www.youtube.com/watch
While it would definitely add to the story if companions like Bethany and Varric mingled, I would get very annoyed, still.
Hmm, wonder what the difference between the reactions to "Varric not being a LI" and "Varric being a LI to Bethany" would be?

Was procrastinating and did in in two parts between yesterday and today...today was the harder run of the two as I didn't have NFL football to distract me.
Is going to be interesting to see how or if Varric's contacts will strenghten or decay depending on his time away from the family business (ie. in our party)

Still catching up on the previous few pages, but wanted to comment on something beyond obvious that I still think is great: Varric is the complete opposite of Oghren. Whereas Oghren was a rowdy, drunk traditionalist, Varric seems to epitomise the future of the Dwarven race. One thing I felt was certain from playing through as a Dwarf Warden in particular, was that regardless of the decision in Orzammar the Dwarf race cannot continue to survive there against the endless Darkspawn much longer. As someone else pointed out it seems that, if anything, there are more surface Dwarves than those still in the Deep Roads, I really hope we get to see more of this big shift in Dwarven society in the games themselves, I find it facinating.
It's also interesting to note that Orzammar is pretty much all that remains keeping the Darkspawn underground, they will die out if they stay down there but they're keeping the Darkspawn away from the surface when there isn't a blight. It's why I facepalmed when the Chantry was considering an Exalted March on the dwarves, they'd wipe out the species and let the darkspawn loose.
Harrowmont's rule isn't much better though considering how he essentially screws everything up if you're a dwarf yourself, refusing aid of human armies in the Deep Roads because they aren't dwarves. Bhelen's rule is modern enough that it might cause problems down the line, though (if ever there's more people who leave to the surface).

That...is a really good question actually. But given that he spends all his free time hanging around in taverns and his job in the family business is a secret it seems like his brother, as the heir to the financial empire, would be the desirable marriage option to the other dwarves. Unless someone just wanted to marry him for love or money.

I think that that Orzammar keep them all underground is kind of an overstatement. The darkspawn without an archdemon are tribal, thus they probably don't all have the plan to take over Orzammar first. The darkspawn in, lets say Anderfells or Antiva probably don't give a rats ass about Orzammar.
I recall hearing that they don't like sunlight, which might be what's keeping them mainly underground. The only reason they have to go to the surface is to reproduce.
And I have a feeling that Kal'Sharok would consist of "modern" dwarves.

I've that too but they seem to be fine roaming in the sunlight, blight or no. That and I've heard in a few points that Darkspawn still make roaming bands to attack the surface. I just thought Orzammar was this giant city that blocked the main Darkspawn from the surface because they seem to imply that while humans live in relaxation and such, the dwarves consider Orzammar the front lines.

@Herr Uhl: What makes you think Kal'Sharok consists of modern Dwarves? I don't neccesarily disagree, just curious. Kal'Sharok intrigues me because I can't help but feel there is a story waiting to be told there in regards to how it has survived. Judging by the codex I believe itw as considered lost thousands of years ago? Or am I getting my dates wrong? I seem to remember the main reason Orzammar has survived is due to it's proximity to the surface, so Kal'Sharok is an oddity waiting to be explored. What country is it under again?
@Dave: Yeah I facepalmed when I heard that too, but then the Chantry is a bit daft in general. As for Harrowmont, I agree. It caught me out on my first playthrough as I was a Dwarf Noble and just wanted Bhelan dead full stop, I just sort of nodded and smiled agreeing to whatever Harrowmont said. Sadly when everything is considered his way is far from the best for the Dwarven people, despite Bhelan being an pain in the rear. I do remember wishing I could just become a paragon myself at the time though. >.>

Completely agreed. It's very fascinating and i really wanna cheer up for these guys. It just feels so sad how corrupted the Dwarf Nobles truly are. Especially in Witch Hunt DLC when you find out what the Dwarves did to their own kind.

I wonder how Orzammar would have blocked them from coming up by Antiva or Alderfells.
I think that underground in general is the front lines, it is where the darkspawn like to dwell. And Orzammar coupled with Kal'Sharok are the only places actively fighting darkspawn instead of repelling them, which may be the front lines thing.
The roaming bands would probably be the weaker tribes that were driven out, in search of females (in order to become stronger) or just out of there.
