*not trying to be insulting of this* Wouldn't it be "A LI" instead of "AN LI"?

They said that? I would assume that stuff would be decided fairly early on because of all the VO and the possibility of the romance tying into the main storyline.
I thought that myself leading me to be confused. I guess we can wait and be surprised or disappointed (but still find him awesome).
But they probably at least know who's going to be an LI even if they haven't finished the work. Wouldn't they create a LI character with that in mind? I'm so confused.
And I loved Sten and Loghain too. Sten more than Loghain but still. I have no doubt I'll love Varric too.

Nope. Whenever it's just letters, you usually go with the sound the letter begins with. EHL-EYE starts with an "eh" sound. That's how I learned it when I got mah schoolins, though. Could be wrong.Dave of Canada wrote...

I'm glad you approve! I made another using a different Solo (*dreamysigh*) quote, explaining Varric's thoughts on Lady Hawke:aimo_ahmed wrote...

How come? I do believe they've said a few times that they haven't worked on romances yet (but apparently the writing is almost done?).
*coughs* Pretty sure what we've said is that we're not talking about the romances yet. They're written. I think we have to wait for some sort of marketing magic before we can say who, what, how many, etc.

Oh! I misunderstood. I thought you'd have to talk about it before writing them down. My apologies.
Talk about it to the rabid hordes. Unless the tear-fueled coffee machine produces the side effect of telepathy.
Edit: I'm laughing at Dave IRL right now.

Tears of Andraste have telepathy as a side effect.
+ My reading comprehension hit the crapper and I didn't understand what Mary said, I edited the above post. I think I should go to bed or something... but no! I refuse, I'd prefer to make more of ass of myself.

The only ones I know for certain are Cassandra (David) and Aveline (Luke).
Let's take a look at some of the other characters...
Varric = Mary?
Bethany = ?
Flemeth = ?
Pirate lady = ?
Momma = ?

Ah, so you already know for sure if Varric can be romanced or not... Well, I don't really care, just curious a bit...Mary Kirby wrote...

Hmmm... considering my work environment, I can't determine if telepathy would be awesome or horrifying.

Right. Giggling uncontrollably now. YOU POOR THING. GO TO BED. Varric wouldn't want you straining yourself in such a way for his sake.Dave of Canada wrote...

David said who was writing Bethany but I can't remember her name. It was a woman though and it wasn't Sheryl or Mary. It's in one of the PAX chats.

Telepathy is always awesome, you need to take the good with the bad.

Jennifer wrote Bethany. And maybe Mother. I'm not sure on Mother. David wrote Flemeth. Sheryl is responsible for the nameless pirate lady.Anarya wrote...

Mother? I had no idea she had a character to write? You mean like, her concept?
EDIT: OH LORD. Oh god, I'm stupid. Mamma Hawke. Do we know her name yet?

Momma Hawke not The Mother.
And I really wanna know what Pirate Lady's name is, dammit. She's obviously an LI follower yet we know so little!

So who's writing Hawke? Or is it a collaborative effort?
The player character always winds up being a collaborative effort, although in the end, it's up to David to decide if the rest of us royally suck at writing Hawke lines, and make us fix them.

A character should probably be awesome regardless of whether you romance him/her. I wouldn't call them "LI characters" so much as "Characters who can become LIs"... if that makes sense. Put another way, the DA team seems more keen on making characters than filling roles. From what I've gathered the attitude isn't so much "we need a character with x, x, and x to appeal to x audience and have x specialty" but more of an organic character design process.
In other words, the core Varric Experience, the big branching awesome dialogue tree of wonders that every player will experience, is what is most important about him, and if he is an LI then that's just another branch on the dialogue tree.
I guess.
Edit: And Mary swoopeth in for clarification!
Edit again: I need to work on sounding less like I actually have authority on the subject.
