He wouldn't be dressed up in frilly stuff but everything in his wardrobe would be top quality as far as materials and craftsmanship. Like when, for example, actors make appearances in jeans and t-shirts but you know everything they have on is way out of your price range. Yeah I can see him being like that. Which is funny that you bring up because when I was costuming him in modern clothes in my head I put him in this obscenely expensive pair of boots I saw once. This. It's like Varric does his shopping at a Thedas-equivalent of Ermenegildo Zegna while Lady Hawke shops at Wal-Mart like the rest of the general peasantry.

If he's an archer, I'm making a dual wield rogue. I really want to see epic finishing kills as a rogue instead of archery's relatively tame nature (this is suspecting Archery gets no finishers of it's own)

I know this is several pages ago, but let me just say, I'm pretty sure I recall the devs saying both Archers and Mages get their own finishing kills this time around. Age of Conan had some pretty BA archer moves, like two arrows/bolts threw the eyes... it's possible to have some cool moves.

But I'm hoping I'll be able to set up Varric as DW'ing two axes. Hells yes!

Oh well, even though my idea of a vague similarity between the Tenth Doctor's and Varric's coats was burned, molested and destroyed, I would die of joy if he referenced (like someone suggested) a travelling physician giving it to him.

But overall, I still think he is into modern Thedas fashion brands instead of random timeless coats, so my fantasies still get destroyed.

He may have massive chest hair, but he's no match for the sheer BA'ness that mulan's villian has. Btw mulan = best disney movie ever.

I imagined Varric briefly as some sort of Thedas-era Neo/Matrix cast member there for a second because of this comment. WEAR A SIMPLE COAT. Affect fasion forever.

I do have a question about him actually. We know he's a party member and a rogue. I was wondering whether he is a dual weilder or an archer. He looks like a blade kind of guy to me though, but who knows.

Been thinking about this actually...Think that he would make a better archer than a DW.  First, turns the whole concept of how a dwarf "should" fight on its head (most fantasy - books, movies, and video games - tend to have dwarves limited to axes and hammers, whereas most archers tend to be human and elf); with archery as its own talent tree/weapon set, would be a good opportunity to change the trope up a bit.  Second, it seems to fit his character (as we know of it so far); I sort of see Varric as someone who isn't really interested in getting down and dirty in the middle of things, but whose fighting style is more "reach out and touch someone"

I just can't imagine (in my head) somebody who goes to the bar drinking and then when he's threatened, pulls out a crossbow / bow and starts shooting the enemies. I imagine more them having a dagger under their coat ready to pull out and stab the person.

Depends on the size of the crossbow. That he uses poison and grenades seems very plausible though.

Dave, my fellow Canadian, you're thinking about it all wrong...think of a certain George Lucas directed movie from 1977.  Picture Varric, exuding confidence, chest hair in all it's magnificent glory, simply leaning back and drinking wine as someone starts to accost him in a bar...Varric simply starts trying to talk his way out of the situation, being seemingly nonchalant about the whole thing, when all of a sudden his opponent has a small crossbow bolt sticking out of his chest or neck and the guy falls down dead at Varric's table.  Varric puts away his concealed mini-crossbow, stands up, tosses a sovereign to the barkeep and tells him "sorry about the mess"
