Yea, that can happen when their is 142 pages on a thread.
EDIT (as I dont feel like posting again): So hypothetical here, but if Varric ISNT a Li. What do you think would be the devs reason as to why? (Other then destroying the hopes and joys of all fan-girls)
Once again I beg you to be gentle with the whips.

Most likely to please the masses. Dwarves aren't regarded as "cool" and they are often looked upon as comic relief and such, Oghren drove that nail further into the coffin. That, and how apparently 5% of people who played Origins played a Dwarf (even though they were the better origins imo).
Edit: although my hope remains due to Gaider saying how they will eventually do a dwarf romance, yet that was on the old boards a bajillion years ago.

Damn the masses! *shakes fist* When will they learn that dwarves are superior to pansy elves and bland humans?
Hopefully Varric will destroy the masses preconceptions, shattering them with the raw, undiluted awesome of his dwarfiness.

I didn't want to be the first to say it.
I was reading through the pages and it struck me again, thanks to you!

If the party member selection screen has a music tune play for every companion, I wonder what Varric's will be?
I would literally die, if he had Aarin Gend's theme, but music and choices with it have probably been done long ago.

Here's how I rank the Origins:
1) Human Noble
2) Dwarven Commoner
3) Dalish Elf
4) Mage
5) Dwarven Noble
6) City Elf
Although, if I could, City Elf would go to 11.
"City Elf goes to 11."

Well... Dwarfs will almost always be comic relief merely because of their apperance. Their short, round, hairy, and save for exceptions like Varric... ugly more often then not.
Their doomed to be the comic relief for the same reasons everyother sitcom has that fat/best friend character and very rarely that fat serious/strait man best friend.

You'r f*in nuts dude. Dwarf Noble is often considered hands down the greatest orgins, even by dwarf haters. How could you have rated it 2nd to last place?

Warhammer's dwarves tend to be regarded as badassery incarnate and there's a few dwarves out there regarded as awesome, I just hope that Varric's character will at least harm the stereotype and bring dwarves foward to being regarded as the superior race.

Oh okay, a surface dwarf keeps the name of his house even though he's stripped of it when back in Orzammar? I replayed Dwarf Noble and I remember it mentioned that there was some Aeducans that went to the surface on an expedition and it failed horribly. If say... they became part of the Merchant's Guild, they'd still keep the Aeducan house name?

Unless they've married or otherwise been added to a house they weren't born into, or someone in their family was made a Paragon, a dwarf's House name is generally the same as their family name. Trian Aeducan, Oghren Kondrat, etc.
Surface dwarves don't refer to Houses unless:
a) They're talking to another dwarf and/or
More liberal surface dwarves would just say, "Varric Tethras." Old money archconservatives would insist on preserving the distinction of rank and caste and say, "Varric of Noble House Tethras," even though he can't technically belong to any caste now that he's on the surface.

I assumed the last name was only to imply house instead of actually being a last name, that's very interestign. Thank you for explaining. Further proving assumptions are bad!
Wait... Oghren Kondrat? Was that mentioned somewhere in the game that I didn't know?

Ah, I see. Thanks for claryfing. Interesting how some surface dwarves stick to tradition.

I was on the fence about using Warhammer dwarfs as an example in my post... but decided on a fat man in a tiny car instead. I knew someone was gonna say "but wats about dem warhamemr dwarfs! They mean serious buisness!"Dave of Canada wrote...

Lol, yes I know all about the Warhammer dwarfs. I'm right up there with the biggest Warhammer dwarf fans on these forums. And you won't find cooler dwarfs in any other franchise dammit!
That said, as a proud owner of pretty much every Warhammer novel that features a dwarf character of some kind. And despite warhammer dwarfs being total BA, their still often used as comic relief... not so much as Skaven or Orcs/Gobbos... but certainly more so then elves or humans. Take the Gotrek and Felix books. Gotrek is the most uber dwarf you'll ever meet. The hulk meets Grumpy from snow white. And while Gotrek is far from a comic relief, his dwarf side kicks like Snorri or Bjorini are totally comic relief characters.
This is the general trend for warhammer books featuring dwarfs. Everytime a dwarf character enters the story, flip a coin to see if they'll be serious or a comic releif. Can't do that with humans or elves.
In other books like Oathbreaker, where it stars ONLY dwarfs, this is less apparent, but still you'll run into many a comic relief.
My point being, that yes, you can have dwarfs be total BA's and very serious characters. But, frankly, because of their looks, you'll always have dwarfs filling the comic relief roles more often then humans or elves. It's easier to get people behind a character if their attractive or if their funny. Since it's hard for dwarfs to be the first, their often made the second.
Side-Note- The way it's sounding, Varric certainly seems to be shaping up to be a comical character and the stereotypical role for a dwarf is merchant... he isn't going to be your typical Oghren, but I don't see him shattering any stereotypes as of now.

Well, from what was said about Mary he doesn't really seem like the usual merchant. His humor also happens to be something different than "LOL IM DRUNK WATCH ME FALL DOWN" that Oghren had, throwing a new stone into the gears of the stereotypical irish drunken dwarf.
I don't expect him to shatter the stereotype until there's nothing left but bits and pieces, imagine the pressure that would put on Mary, but he seems to be going for a new appeal to the dwarven race as a whole and might convert a few anti-dwarves into dwarf fans.
Origins itself mostly averted the trope.
