Side-Note- The way it's sounding, Varric certainly seems to be shaping up to be a comical character and the stereotypical role for a dwarf is merchant... he isn't going to be your typical Oghren, but I don't see him shattering any stereotypes as of now.
Well, from what was said about Mary he doesn't really seem like the usual merchant. His humor also happens to be something different than "LOL IM DRUNK WATCH ME FALL DOWN" that Oghren had, throwing a new stone into the gears of the stereotypical irish drunken dwarf.
I don't expect him to shatter the stereotype until there's nothing left but bits and pieces, imagine the pressure that would put on Mary, but he seems to be going for a new appeal to the dwarven race as a whole and might convert a few anti-dwarves into dwarf fans.
Origins itself mostly averted the trope.
That's why I kind of want him to be an archer rather than a DW...Having a full-time party member (not counting Scout of Dwarf Noble origin), who's a dwarf and an archer certainly goes against the sterotype of "me dwarf, me kill things with axe and/or hammer". Humans and Elves tend to always have the ability to "reach out and touch someone" with Archery, having a dwarf who is as, if not more, capable as a Human or an Elf at archery would be interesting. I would certainly be happy with him using either a bow or crossbow (should art design allow crossbows to be part of the archery combat)
