Side-Note- The way it's sounding, Varric certainly seems to be shaping up to be a comical character and the stereotypical role for a dwarf is merchant... he isn't going to be your typical Oghren, but I don't see him shattering any stereotypes as of now.

Well, from what was said about Mary he doesn't really seem like the usual merchant. His humor also happens to be something different than "LOL IM DRUNK WATCH ME FALL DOWN" that Oghren had, throwing a new stone into the gears of the stereotypical irish drunken dwarf.

I don't expect him to shatter the stereotype until there's nothing left but bits and pieces, imagine the pressure that would put on Mary, but he seems to be going for a new appeal to the dwarven race as a whole and might convert a few anti-dwarves into dwarf fans.

Origins itself mostly averted the trope.

That's why I kind of want him to be an archer rather than a DW...Having a full-time party member (not counting Scout of Dwarf Noble origin), who's a dwarf and an archer certainly goes against the sterotype of "me dwarf, me kill things with axe and/or hammer".  Humans and Elves tend to always have the ability to "reach out and touch someone" with Archery, having a dwarf who is as, if not more, capable as a Human or an Elf at archery would be interesting.  I would certainly be happy with him using either a bow or crossbow (should art design allow crossbows to be part of the archery combat)

We can only hope... I still long for the day we dwarf fans will be able to overrun the elf fans and force them to eat kittens alive.

Actually, crowsbows are a pretty stereotypical dwarf weapon... so that wouldn't be really going agianst any stereotypes.

Bows on the other hand.

But now we're walking into elf territory, and thats no where I want Varric to be.

Hey, what's wrong with elves? Eh, I think all races have their merits. I tend to find humans the most boring though. Unless I am forced to or there is some special incentive to play as them (only reason I played a Cousland), I'll pick something else.

Varric can always be specced to fit your confiiguration anyway. If he's DW just start giving him archery talents. Not that I really know if it will work that way like it did in Origins though.

Hawke: *thrusts bow into Varric's arms*
Varric: "... Do you expect me to use this?"
Hawke: "What kind of question is that? Of course I do."
Varric: "But I have a set of daggers that I know how to use. And use well, mind you."
Hawke: "I don't care. Use this."
Varric: "But why?"
Hawke: "YOU ARE GOING TO USE THIS BOW, AND YOU ARE GOING TO LIKE IT."

Girlish looks can be a plus on well, girls. Just sayin'

(as for hippish beliefs... just talk with some city elves to expand your horizons. Don't forget to hold on your purse while you do)

They still have their stupid tree don't they? The world would be such a better place without trees

Hey! I finally got a character who can crack some freakin' jokes with the player, and don't you take that away from me, Wishpig!

Meanie.

Most of the city elves don't even remember what the vhenadahl even represents. They keep it out of habit now, not out of sentiment.

You mean that tree that's sitting in the middle of a festering cesspool of humanity/elfity that had more use as an atypical fire hydrant for your dog than anything else? Yup, they REALLY loved that tree. Loved it so much that they had no problem letting your dog relieve itself all over it.

I don't see a problem with embracing and respecting nature. Especially, you know, if you have to live in it. "Wooo I cherish the earth that sustains me and my loved ones I am so laaame~~"

Awwww... now I feel bad. All I'm saying is Varric is not radically un-dwarf like. Which makes sense because he is, infact, a dwarf. If he shaved his chest hair and started working at the chantry... now thats un-dwarf like. *As you can tell I didn't give the dwarf his church in DA:O*

As of now, even from what little I know, Varric is shaping up to be the hit companion of the game, so you created another winner!

OH NOES!

BRB, chopping all the trees around me. Maybe if I start tonight I'll be able to crumble the mountains near me by the time I'm a million years old. Yes, I will somehow extend my lifespan just to destroy all of nature around me. Don't want to be a hippie, ya know.

ANYWAY.

Nah, just do what I do, buy a hummer. Get a bunch of puppies and kittens, and grind them into goo. Then drive to the nearest PETA orginization, and chuck puppy/kitty juice filled balloons at them.

Hippies are hip though... or was it hemp...
All that really matters, is Varric is cool, he's a spy, he's got money, he's got power and influence, and on top of all that.  I'm sure Varric has plenty of Elven wenches on payroll under the "secret" 300 soverignper  toilet-seat budget.

Aye but that'd be out of character for my CE to know. Or for dwarf to understand, i suspect.
