Is that Bethany in the second, serious picture?
...I'll KILL her!!
The gauntlet makes it seem like Hawke.
Whoops. I was so busy seething over Bethany-look-a-like getting intimate with my man that I totally missed the gauntlet.
...My bad.

If you haven't figured out that mystery, then you are not yet enlightened enough to know, grasshoppah.

Point: Updates on Varric by Mary Kirby and gang.
You: How do you pronounce "somemone"?
EDIT: yes we are all prone to typos...

So what could it be? Something smallish and cylindrical obviously, but a scroll? Map? Spyglass? Flute? I wonder if it's significant to the plot. WHAT ARE YOU HIDING IN THERE, MASTER TETHRAS?!?
Looks like a map case to me. Not much else that could fit in there. Maybe Varric is like that one guy in everyone's life who knows where EVERYTHING is. Which gives me an idea...
Hawke: Are we there yet?
Varric: No.
Hawke: Are we there yet?
Varric: No.
Hawke: Are we there yet?
Varric: No.
Hawke: Are we there yet?
Varric: I have no qualms about giving you a papercut with this thing.
Hawke: ...
Varric: /sigh. Yes we're almost there.
Hawke: 8D
Actually while we're asking Mary questions, I've been wondering how the writers keep track of what dialogue leads to what, what lines they have to write, etc. I can't imagine it's a word document. Is there some special custom made program that works like, I dunno, a phylogenetic tree or something?

Care to chime in, Mary, if it's not a spoiler?
His chronicles of Hawke, the future bestseller.
Cassandra is basically Annie Wilkes.

Well, David Gaider has said on a few occasions that the narration changes depending on the character and their relationship with Varric. I assume this means whether he likes them or hates them, but it could certainly adapt to if he was an LI. Plus, I don't think it was confirmed that he was the only narrator.MachineMaiden wrote...
You know I'm not against him being a LI, far from it, seeing as how I wanted to romance Gorim a lot and Oghren sometimes but I mean exactly how will we be able to with Varric? I mean, seeing how he will be the narrirator and all it just doesn't seem possible to me.

I always picture a: "So there we were, surrounded by... " set-up line that dissovles into the action as narrated.Calla S wrote...

Then there's another stretch of game play before Hawke (or someone else) accomplishes a plot-related task that triggers a dissolve back to Varric and Cassandra, "... and that's how we accidently destroyed the Alka-Seltzer Chalice."

I've always presumed that it was a map and/or scroll case, with which he recorded the events and such.

So uh in this example, Varric is Dr. Girlfriend, if you couldn't tell. Now I have to draw Cass doing a big musical number against the moonlit sky on a giant flying chantry seeker symbol.
Just a theory I've had rolling around my head for a while. It helps that what Mary has divulged of Varric so far reminds me of an uncle I have haha. I'm excited to see what they're actually like

My guess is that they use color coding. Any response is a certain color, and then that particular "storyline" is in the same color.
That, or lots and lots of notes and string.

It is his BOOMSTICK!!! On a completely unrelated note, Im happy with Brian Bloom doing the VO, but can you imagine Bruce Campbell doing Varric?

But then also wouldn't he be with Hawke at the end of the story? Wouldn't Hawke (I know I would) want that delicious little gumdrop next to them as they reign as the Champion of Kirkwall? The area in the screenshot sorta seems like Varric is hiding or in a secluded place.
From what I gathered, Cassandra is interrogating Varric, so it's not really his choice of where he is at the moment of narration...

If you have ever opened up the DA or NWN toolset, we have a dialogue editor. I could never do this job with a regular word document, I would lose my mind.
In the tools, a dialogue file looks sort of like... (well, we'll see if the BB code lets me do this *crosses fingers*)

_____-(VARRIC) Hey, Hawke, did I ever ask you your thoughts on pie?
____________+(Choice #1) I hate pie.
____________+(Choice #2) Pie's okay. I'm more of a cake fan, though.
____________-(Choice #3) PIE IS TEH BEST!!!!
_____________________(VARRIC) Woah! I mean, I knew everyone liked pie, but that's a little... much, don't you think?
So... clicking on any of the plus signs opens up that branch. Green lines (In my tools, because I swtich the colors) are NPC lines, and blue ones are player lines.
EDIT: Colors aren't cooperating, but you get the idea. Probably.
