I haven't broken my game yet with mods and I have a lot of em. Well I did break it a few times messing with my chargenmorph file but I fixed it.
Good point. I actually thought it was fun teaching myself all that stuff though.
I'm debating whether to play Fallout NV. I've never played a Fallout game before. I tried FO3 but I just couldn't get into it and I hated the monochrome scenery. But I hear so many good things about them, and I loved Oblivion. Ehh maybe I'll give it a shot. I WOULD play Fable 3 but I can't. Stupid delayed PC version.
Buuut anyway about Varric. I want to try to actually draw Varric this week on Draw Varric Day. Must think of a good concept. Actually I have a few rattling around, so let me amend that: must decide on one and actually do it. (bad Anarya, bad!)

Oblivion is way better than Fallout 3, in my opinion. Fallout 3 is bleak, blah, and... Well it's just ugly. Oblivion is vivid and colorful and beautiful... I really wish Bethseda would make more TES games.

If you have ever opened up the DA or NWN toolset, we have a dialogue editor. I could never do this job with a regular word document, I would lose my mind.
In the tools, a dialogue file looks sort of like... (well, we'll see if the BB code lets me do this *crosses fingers*)

_____-(VARRIC) Hey, Hawke, did I ever ask you your thoughts on pie?
____________+(Choice #1) I hate pie.
____________+(Choice #2) Pie's okay. I'm more of a cake fan, though.
____________-(Choice #3) PIE IS TEH BEST!!!!

So... clicking on any of the plus signs opens up that branch. Green lines (In my tools, because I swtich the colors) are NPC lines, and blue ones are player lines.
EDIT: Colors aren't cooperating, but you get the idea. Probably.
I game on consoles so I've been missing out on my technical learnins', but that makes perfect sense. Thank you for wrestling with BBC for my sake
Edit: Also, mm. Cake.
I was right! Color coding FTW!
So that's TWO things I'm right about. What was that other thing I predicted? Oh yeah, Varric being an LI...

I just don't want to spend a lot of time in a drab ugly world. I mean I live in the middle of a city already, I kinda want escapism in my games. I suppose that makes me a bit superficial but, ehh.

Edit: Also, I mean, the post apocalypse is pretty in its own way, but Oblivion has this nice subtle change in foliage and groundcover and weather that makes you feel more like you've gone somewhere new, IIRC. One problem I had with Oblivion is that I think they scaled the enemies, so by the time I got back off sidequests and started doing the plot I just... died a lot and lost interest... then I forgot where I was lol.
@Thandal: Please draw some Varric with us !

late nineties it was all about BRIGHT ****, then the early 2000s it was all about MUD, walk around in morrowind its awesome because of it. Then mid to now it was all GARDENS and muddy games do not look very good you have to have forests and **** like Oblivion.

The comparison to Bioshock is a good one because it was dark and the place wasn't running proper. But there was color where it should have been.

See, it's not that it's post-apocalyptic and ruined that I have a problem with, I dunno. I mean, I thought Arkham Asylum and Bioshock had fantastic art direction and they did the ruined thing very well. It's just the bleak and boring look that I don't like, but maybe I didn't play it long enough to really see enough of it. I puttered around a little in Megaton and that's about as far as I got. >_>

There is only ONE place in Fallout that doesn't have the monochrome look. And it's not that big. It's called Oasis and it has radiated water and a mutated tree-man. It's the only place I liked, because it was forested. But small, sadly.
I'm hoping that DA2 will have some nice, vibrant places, and not be all bleak-looking. Some of the concept art suggests bleak, but maybe it won't be too bad.

I mean, yeah. Think of it as filters. I'm trying to think of a game that ran across many vibrant or bleak things but I am drawing a blank. Modern games anyway.

Gonna play devil's advocate with Fallout here and hazard a guess that monochrome helps disguise repeated assets. If you saw one colorful pile of trash you'd be noticing that same colorful pile of trash everywhere in the world.
Edit: okay bad example. But maybe there's a point someone can grasp in it. It's late here and I"m multitasking XD

Ehhh... you can't really compare Bioshock to a relatively open world RPG. Bioshock has the advantage of linearity, and when you know where the player will be next at any given moment you can queue up fancy scripts and spooky lighting. Fine game, though.

It's like watching an episode of the Smurfs or Scooby Doo or The Flintstones... They're always running by, or driving by, the same mushroom, tree, bookshelf, door, caveman hut, palm tree, etc, over and over again. And yet it looks like they're going somewhere.

QUESTION: what do you think Varric's religious preferance is? Does he believe in the Maker, as he was born topside, or does he believe in the Ancestors and Paragons, because of his dwarfism.
Just a curious thought:)

And here's another bug-eyed Cassandra pic. LINK
Also in the same album there are a bunch of other pics including one of Carver I have never seen before. I guess this was all taken during one of the demos in Europe. LINK
