I like him, personally. He looks attractive enough, isn't outlandishly muscled and still has the "cool" factor with him. I'd just need the voice and I'd already have my full opinion of Hawke built up. Chances are, I'll most likely use the default if the character creator isn't half as strong as what default Hawke looks like.

Yeah, pirate chick isn't very loved right now. Either it's misogynist jerks having a cow over her not being "perfect" or Hawke fangirls wanting to throw her off a cliff... In the end she gets to mack on Hawke, so she wins xD

If she stays exactly as she does in the trailer, I'd never be able to romance her. Not due to how she compares to other game women based off models or because she lacks Varric's chest hair, I'd just be unable to romance her because she looks exactly like my Aunt. Who needs a Bethany romance for creepy incest when I have my aunt?

I haven't found any video game characters that look like my mom when she was young, but she looked like Mary Magdalene from Jesus Christ Superstar the '70s movie version.

Edit: I find it strange that everyone is focusing so much on that one image of Varric. This is not just a Bioware game, it's a David Gaider/Mary Kirby/Sheryl Chee (and all you other wonderful writers) game, and what do they do best? Dialogue! Awesome, hilarious, touching, clever dialogue that we quote for ages afterwards. I'm sure Varric will be no exception, I'm hoping he'll be one of the stand out characters of DA2 in fact. That's what makes him appeal to me, even as a potential LI for one of my characters, rather than how he might look. (Oh and the chest hair of course, I mean, rawr).

Yeah, I remember the many complaints of Zevran looking nothing like his concept art (Visual Kei anyone??) but he has still gained many fangirls ^^
