I would think that Varric has an eclectic taste when it comes to music. He needs to have an all-knowing ear so he can further embellish his stories.

Bianca could be a Qunari-made crossbow, which would fit with the Qunari presence in Kirkwall.

These questions are pretty impossible to answer since rivalry seems to involve changing someone's mind about a certain issue and we don't know what these issues are or what the characters feel about them.

You know, I wonder if it would involve a subtle tweaking of the difficulty?  Making things a touch more difficult if you're a rival and a touch more easy if you're a friend?

Agree!  Varric could well appreciate everything named so far, and probably has copies of most of it.

But when it's just him and Bianca, it's Frank.  As he settles into his favorite chair after a long day of gettng the best of everyone else, filling his goblet with the nectar he managed to talk Bartrand into smuggling into Kirkwall this week, and loosening his jacket a button or two, Ol' Blue Eyes sets the mood.

Sure, Bianca need her daily rub-down, and he'll get to it in a moment, but for now...

(Oh, and for the record... 

You know the tombstone behind the farmhouse on the outskirts of Haven?  The one for "Great Grandfather Gygax"? 
I called Gary Gygax one Summer evening to ask a rules question about "GreyHawk".  He answered.  Politely.
So NFTM, bsbcaer, and Anarya can make room for another chair on that porch.  )

Kind of strange to think of Varric as a rival rather than a friend, after all the golden light we've shone upon him.

If he were a rival... I would think that he'd try to make things difficult for you. Maybe he'd stab Hawke in the back (figuratively) over small things, or start up arguments out of the blue just to annoy him/her. Maybe he'll completely lie and show Hawke  in a bad light when he's narrating Hawke's story.

Yeah but with the personality we have of Varric at the moment, I'm having trouble figuring what would be considered against Varric.
