That could be how he gets in with Hawke, after all an aspiring Champion of Kirkwall is a pretty big fish in local politics, and having him on Tethas family's side could lead to more money in the long run.

Only thing wrong with this is that Hawke is a nobody when Varric is presumed to meet him.

Varric's job (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) is to know about things that could impact the family's business.  A group of people from Ferelden who don't look like your typical refugees, (possibly) asking about a Dalish clan who just came from Ferelden, might pique his curiosity.  Dalish don't have the best of reputations, and if Varric thinks that Hawke & Co are after revenge for something, it could cause the Dalish clan to retaliate by attacking merchant carivans.  Or Hawke could have a cordial relationship with the clan, and might have a connection he can exploit to get Dalish goods for his business.

Or I could be wrong about all that and Varric just thinks they might be good drinking buddies or something.

If we take it as strictly analogous, Varric would be more like M seeing how he's in charge of the spy network, Bertrand would be playing the role of Home Minister (or even Prime Minister), which would make Varric's agents into 006 or 007...

I tried to draw Varric in a Chestshire (sp?) chair with Isabela leaning against it casually but it came out poorly.. still need a decent idea for this week's DVT (drawing chairs is not my strongpoint). Hm, actually, I will have to do DVT early or late this week, have a busy day on Thursday. Going to go see Muse, yay!

If I could draw better than stick figures, I'd contribute, but... I don't have the means. I don't even have crayons, otherwise I'd print out Pour Homme Varric, color it in, scan it and submit it. If Aimo allows that sort of thing.

That being said, glowing pansy elfish type mystery guy doesn't have the depth that our Varric brings to the table

If it helps at all, you can try convincing Varric fans to overrun Meg fans while screaming at the top of their lungs.
