I would say you NEED more then one. Just having him go off track once seems pretty unnatural.
If he's "going off track" it's because he's not doing it deliberately. If he's not doing it deliberately then there is no reason, from a design perspective, to do it at all. Ergo, it exists to exist. Effectively that means we will be replaying parts of the game for the sake of replaying parts of the game. This strikes me as a less than brilliant idea.

First I will say 2 and 3 prob aren't the case. Varric is no idiot or forgetfull. He can't afford to be in his position nor is there even the slightest indication this is the case.
I was just making a point with that. I don't think he is an idiot. I think he exaggerates for the sake of exaggerating or because he has an agenda, and I am hoping it is not the former.

Chances are he either has an alterior motive, he's being a cocky little jerk, or he's toying around and having a bit of fun. Plus from the sounds of his bio, sounds like he enjoys weaving a good tale. Whatever the case it totally seems within his character. This it doesn't exist JUST because it's cool. It exists cause it fits Varrics character... and is cool.
I do not object to his liking to embellish a story or suggesting this should not be in character for him. My concern regards having to replay perhaps several parts of the game for seemingly no other reason than to replay them. If the justification for this game element is "because it's in character" then it is a bad justification for a bad game element.

Why? ...Why not?
Let me counter with, "why?"

It's part of the fun of the game to see your own story embellished by a master storyteller. And then get called on his bull****.
Once. Not four or five times. That's artificial game length.
