You're opinion that you don't like the concept of his character embellishing to embellish is not one I share. I love the idea he's just exaggerating the story cause it's fun to him. I know a ton of people like that and in a videogame it could be a much needed departure from the same stale narrating we always seem to get.

You misunderstand. I don't mind this as an attribute of his personality. I don't mind him going off on a tangent or adding a few extra darkspawn for Cassandra to interrupt him. I mind that this means replaying sections of the game over and over (I'm assuming for the sake of the discussion that this is what it means).

Wishpig wrote...

And bad news for you, his bio makes it sounds like he enjoys having his "fun" with stories.

His biography makes no indication of how the game will use this trait.

Wishpig wrote...

What I don't like is how you seem to be taking a negative stance on something that could go in dozens of different directions. Bioware games are driven by their characters. "Because it's in their character" is an extremely valid reason imo.

I'm not "taking a negative stance" to anything, I am drawing attention to what I perceive to be a very poor game element whether or not DA2 uses said element, and asking if anyone knows if it does. If it does, bollocks and that'll be the end of it.

So, as we know, Varric loves to weave tales. He likes to exaggerate and twist the truth.

Say it is just him having a bit of fun with no other motives. You think it would be a bad game-play element to properly represent his character in a unique fashion? I think it would be out of character if he didn't... and I think THAT would be a bad story element.

As for gameplay element, I'm still not getting why this would be bad unless it was overused. It would be bad because it didn't really happen? Why not look at it like it adds a bit of something that wouldn't be there otherwise.

Despite my disdain for people turning this thread into a fangirl cliche', your artwork always astounds! Just so freaking talented.

It's a fan thread. Wtf are you expecting?

Seriously.

Pseudo, your art - as always - is pure, unadulterated love. As in, I loves it.

Maybe the question should be changed to "Is this element overused in the game", because that seems to be what he's getting at.

Pseudo!! I love Varric's expression. LadyHawke looks like she is patting a kitten or some other delicate animal there.

OMG, I just put the latest Varric screenie on my desktop.. it is so glorious.

There is a diffrence between a fan thread and a fangirl thread. Compare this to a popular ugly character and you'll see what I mean.

For example... a simple gif of Varric running provokes "OMG *DROOLS*" "SO CUTE" "AWWWWW" "Mmmm I want to nibble his hairy nipples!"

I thought Varric was a bad***, but now I can't take the guy seriously! I just keep think of pictures of him gazing cheesily into Lady Hawkes eyes or him in some cheesy comic strip outta a romatic comedy.

It's like if Oghren and Justin Bieber had a child...

PS- Fanboys can do the same type of thing... but it's rarer and creepier as fanboys take it toooooo far. You girls may get cheesy but this is far from Bethanay/hawke romance creepy.

In comparison to other gush threads, this one is incredibly tame, Wishpig. And there are fanbois here too. Anyway if it's not your cup of tea, you are not forced to read it.

I don't need (or want) to play through his tall tales. I will even argue doing it doesn't add anything to the game that a simple cutscene wouldn't, except for length. I wouldn't mind sitting through a few cutscenes -- the disconnect would still be there, if it ever was, but it would be less tedious.

Wishpig wrote...

The bit it adds is a repeat. That's why we replay games (it's also why we don't replay games).

In a sense, but to me that implies some arbitrary limit. If this element can be overused, it will have been overused the second time it happens. The alternative is that it can never be overused. That is what a sound justification means to me.

Do dwarves waddle in DA:O? I don't remember but I kind of wish they did.

Yes I've seen gush threads, but as a fan of dwarf characters, I never really had a drive to be on them before.

I'm torn I think Varric is awesome and wanna chat about his awesomeness... but things can get real corny around here.

See now Snoteye has it down! This is the kinda Varric stuff I wanna talk about.

Sigh. We think he's awesome, too. Some of us just have different ways of expressing it, as some of us do hope that he's an LI.

Yanno, a love interest.

As in we'd like him to be a romance. Including, you guessed it, romance and even occasional corniness.

Meaning we're attracted to him and are in the position to fawn all over His Chestliness. Don't like it? That's you, not us. No one else seems to have a real problem with it.

What!?!?! I really don't get the bolded line. Who says the second time is when it's overused.

A good joke. It can still be funny the second, third, fourth, maybe even fifth time... but there's a limit.

Sandal was a joke. He just said ENCHANTMENT. I got many laughs and entertainment out of it... but eventually it just stopped being entertainment.

It's girls fwning over Bieber... but Varric isn't even real. I don't get it. I guess I've seperated real life romance from game romance a bit to much to get it. I've never been attracted to a game character or though of ingame romance as anything more then a nifty little story point.

It's alright. If Varric is an LI, I'll probably just end up romancing him every. single. time. With a brief interlude for Isabela, of course.

I don't know what you two hope to acheive on the "how does the exaggerated portion of the framed narrative work exactly" conversation but it's erring on being off-topic. I'm not trying to sound mean or anything but.. we really just don't have enough info on how the storytelling works in the game yet (all we have is that old demo to base some assumptions on). We don't even know the overall plot of DA 2 (just a general "you rise to power and Varric tells the story").

Yeah, basically all we have right now is ****ing/whining, a few screenshots to moon over, and fannish speculation. I'll just... stick to the second two, but we just don't have enough to go on. We require more information before we get into an in depth discussion about Varric's character and his place in the story.

Wishpig, your "intelligent discussion" with no gooey romance will no doubt come along after release. Unless he's an LI. Then we'll just have fanfic and shirtless pictures of Varric.

Aha... well. I wouldn't go so far as to say that, nor would I call it "nonsense." My favorite author (Marion Zimmer Bradley) started off writing fan fiction of Tolkien's work. There is absolutely nothing wrong with playing around in someone else's sandbox.

Annnnnd you edited that last part out. Saw my sig, didya? ;)

Nope I edited before you posted! I thought it was assuming to much. I was right ;)
Although I just wish I was a bit faster.

No offense to good writers out there... but my god fanfiction can be terrible. Blame Sonic fans. They ruin everything.

Lots of things can be terrible, most mainstream TV shows are terrible these days.
