Coherency. Besides, his parents have already been stablished as dwarves, both of them. I doubt there's a milkman involved.

Perhaps both his parents are half dwarves?
Making him a QUARTER DWARF and that's how he became a merchant (get it? because he's a Quarter dwarf) hahahaahahahahahahahahaha

I wonder what Varric's looks like? Also a question, the High Town description says that "everyone who is anyone in Kirkwall lives in Hightown". Now Bartrand is an important merchant, but is he one of the biggest in Kirkwall? If so do they allow dwarves and/or elves in High Town?

Also do you think Varric has his own place? Or lives with Bartrand?

Varric will most likely be found at his favourite tavern (and cover for his spy network base) spinning stories.
I doubt we'll see elves in Hightown unless they're servants, but mostly because elves, as a rule, are dirt poor. I believe money would many any possible prejudice against dwarves be politely ignored.

I can see it going either way. Living with his family would reinforce the image he's built for himself as the lazy younger brother of the family, something that I'm sure comes in handy with his spy ring. On the other than I can also see him as having his own place just to unwind and get away from it all when the politics of being in a Dwarven Merchant family finally catches up with him.

But ya atm if I had to put money on the cliche' bioware betrayer it would be Varric. He actually reminds me a bit of Yoshimo. Of course with so few companions known... that isn't saying much at all.

BUT He's part of a spy network to "deal" with troubles that might arise for his family. Something tells me he's done some shady s*** in his day.

I guess it would make sense to see him at a tavern, but do you think that in the ten year storyline your followers sometimes change bases/homes, whatever you want to call it.

If you look in the background there is what almost seems like a Dwarven styled statue at the entrance to that building, street, alley (if a street or alley seems to be a covered one), whatever. I wonder if there is a Dwarven quarter of Kirkwall.

Well Varric's parents came to Kirkwall as Surface Dwarves. Maybe there are more Surface Dwarves in Kirkwall and there is an unoficiall Dwarven Quarter.

If not a quater at least allot of dwarvin influenced stuff. Varric is a prince of a extremely powerfull dwarvin guild in Kirkwall. A dwarf presence will be felt and seen.

Varric Thread! I missed the 400 page mark but congratulations! Whoever that blogger was that made those comments is seriously out of touch, if this thread wasn't mature I wouldn't be here (and I suspect most of us wouldn't be, us forumites got a bit of a reputation to keep around these parts).

Named, did you get that wallpaper you were after? I just right-clicked on that screenshot and added it as wallpaper and selected the option to "stretch" it to 1920 x 1200 and it looks fantastic. Every time I boot up my PC, there's Varric looking down at me (my monitor sits up a bit so he really is looking down lol). It's pretty cool

What else.. oh Lvl12Medic.. looks like you had a little Alistair moment there with the thought that sounded better in your head

On slave trade and the Tethras'.. I somehow doubt they have been their long enough. Remember, it's been a LONG time since Tevinter controlled Kirkwall (I want to say several hundred years) so it's hard to say how long the Tethras family has been on the surface but I somehow doubt they've been there that long. I guess we'll find out though. It would be very interesting if Varric has to choose between "tradition and family" or "progression and Hawke" of sorts (not the best words I can think of but I am still waking up).

Gosh, I should do a Varric sketch, been awhile since I drew him,  to celebrate the 400th page milestone but I am just empty on ideas (been so focused on researching and developing my Origins/Awakening-based fanfic lately).

Anyway, going to go back and re-read a few pages to make sure I didn't miss anything else of importance. You guys and gals are the awesomest on the 'net.<3

Quality looks a little lower in the second one, but I prefer the color in it. The first one is more faithful to the original screenshot. I'm going to try cleaning it up a little more later, and I definitely want to work on the hand some more. Especially the middle finger. Still looks better than the watermark, though, I think. (Of course, I can always put the watermark back in if you prefer it to what it currently is. Or try obscuring the hand with something the same size/shape of the watermark.)

You know, regarding Varric's LI status... If he's not romanceable, I wish the Devs would just say so. It would be better than having our feelings crushed later on. It's like being in a bad relationship where you find out your partner doesn't really like you.

But I agree, I'd like to know before launch day so I can decide if I will work on charming Varric or Isabela for my LadyHawke.

It's not like it would hurt the plot or be a spoiler to say that he's not a romance option. It's like Gaider saying that Fenris is not a mage and not Dalish. That didn't take away from anything.

They can't guarantee that tear production would remain at optimum levels if such information was revealed.

( This is my first time posting in the Varric thread, despite having read the first one in its entirety, as well as all 401 pages of this one. And I must say, I've a quite a few laughs. Congrats on keeping this awesome going for so long, guys!  )
