I could at least see them putting something in the game as an easter egg about the thread.

Having a comb as a gift for Varric I could easily see them doing. If not in the game proper then if they do another Feastday-style DLC then definitely there.

Also, I agree that we should be told early if he isn't an LI...

( This is my first time posting in the Varric thread, despite having read the first one in its entirety, as well as all 401 pages of this one. And I must say, I've a quite a few laughs. Congrats on keeping this awesome going for so long, guys! :P )

But, I just wanted to pop in and say...don't jinx it! >__> Cuz I'm really hoping Varric is an LI. He's awesome and adorable. Obviously.
Back to lurking for me! :wizard: /poofs

Nice to see you, Echo.

I'm not trying to jinx it, I hope that Varric is an LI, too. (I really, really, do!) But if he's not an LI, I'd rather know right away, rather than hoping and wishing and praying and wasting all my energy just to find out later that nope, we're all screwed and all we get to pick from are the generic human or elf LI's out there.

And like I said before, if he's not an LI, then there's no harm in telling us so. Tear production or no tear production... Because really, I think if we do hear that he's not an LI, there's going to be a lot of tears, so Bioware doesn't have to worry so much about the coffee pots running dry. They'll just have to put out some extra pots to catch the deluge is all.

And then it will be done and over with, and we can all go jump on the Fenris bandwagon.

I wonder if they're ever going to do character themed trailers, like they did for DA:O.

I hope so, it was nice to see some of the character personalties before the game came out.

Agreed, and they also can give off hints (or outright confirm) that the character in question are romance options. I do remember Alistair's though, I don't recall any hints there. But they did pretty much confirm in Zevran's (the trailers probably confirmed for Morrigan & Leliana too).

Was that before the trailers showing the romance scenes? Because when I saw that, I was like, "Oh, he/she is obviously a romance option. And you can have sex! WOW!" Because Dragon Age Origins was the first Bioware game I'd ever played, I didn't know of any games that had romantic relationships or sex before it. And now I'm hooked on Bioware games and hoping other gaming companies follow suit. Although I did try the Witcher, but I lost interest very quickly because I couldn't play as my own gender.

I think that was after.
If Varric gets a trailer, it could give a hint that he's an Li if he is one.

Does anyone remember the order they revealed the companions for DA:O? That could give a clue.

Here's another idea... Mary wrote Varric, but Mary doesn't have any experience in writing romances, at least not for Bioware. Being able to write a good romance, especially in a game where you have to live up to David Gaider's standards... Why would Bioware put a romance-rookie writer on something like that? They wouldn't. Therefore... Mary + Non-romantic writing history = Varric is not a love interest. Sadly.

I'm just putting things into perspective so I won't be let down. I'm still a big fan of Varric.

That's fair. Easier to deal with disappointment if you don't keep your hopes up too high. I would be surprised if they didn't add anything in the game in response to this thread though.

But, see, Sheryl's writing Isabela, isn't she? And Isabela is a romance option. :) Named, when did you turn into a big ol cynic?!

Who has Sheryl written before?
edit: According to the dragon age wiki:

Dog, Leliana, Wynne, Oghren and Cullen.

I don't want my heart broken! I love Varric. I do. But I'm trying to be realistic, also. Mary doesn't have any experience writing romances, so they're not going to have her write something that she doesn't know how to do. David wrote Alistair, Zevran and Morrigan, and Sheryl wrote Leliana. So if Sheryl is writing Isabela, at least she's got some experience in writing romantic storylines under her belt. Mary can write sarcasm and cookies. But not romance.

It's terrible, I know. I was one of the biggest love-train hoppers for Varric that there is, but then when I was thinking about it, the facts sort of slapped me in the face and I was like... Dang, that can't happen. Not to mention in the Fenris thread that David Gaider said that fans were making certain characters out to be more than they were, and that those fans would be very disappointed... I think we might be the fans he was referencing.

:crying: I'm sorry.

Well..think of it like this.. when's Mary going to get a romance plot under *her* belt? She can start now, with Varric :D

Exactly this! Mary ain't no one (or two) trick pony. I haven't a doubt in my mind that she can do far, far more than sarcasm and cookies. Plus, look at how big Varric's role is going to be! He's the bloody narrator, basically. If he is an LI, then Mary's got this.

Trust in the Kirby. Trust.

Plus, I think Gaider likes to make fun of us because we like Varric so much. He knows it'll cause us stress and heartache.

He's definitely causing me stress and heartache.

And strife.

Gonads and strife.

ahem.

But yeah, I went look at the Fenris thread to see what he'd said about the whole "disappointed" thing, and it appears he didn't say anything of the sort. He HAS said it before, but not in the Fenris thread. Unless you're talking about the MEG thread, which, well, he's said that before in other threads, but he's just doing it to cheese us off.

It was the first Meg thread. Chris Priestly said this:

"No, not everyone in Dragon Age 2 is romanceable. It seems that every NPC
we have shown (Varric, Flemeth, Aveline, Isabela, etc) MUST be a
romance. This line of thinking will lead to disappointment as Dragon Age
II is an action RPG, NOT a dating simulator."

And then David Gaider said this:

"Incidentally, I think Chris's mention of "this is not a dating sim" is a
result of people consistently asking that (and sometimes assuming it's
the case) after every single character reveal... and not just this
character in particular. People who work themselves up into a lather
assuming that every character is an a) party member or B) romanceable
are bound to be bitterly disappointed.

Not that you're not in
charge of your own disappointments, but we don't want to see you crying
when a character who is pretty awesome just isn't as awesome as you imagined them to be.

Wait... what am I saying? Of course we want to see you crying. Or at least I do.

...carry on."

Here's the link if anyone wants to read the quotes in their full context.

Do you really think he's just trying to cheese us off? Maybe he is really trying to warn us so that we won't be horribly disappointed.
