if for whatever reason Varric isn't given LI status, I can still see him as the kind of character who would hold out for Hawke if she didn't romance.

If he isn't, I think that would be a beautiful way for the team to answer the issue. He plays hard to get into the very end, but has a soft spot in his heart for her without him telling. Either to protect her or for some other reason.

Then again, I'm a sucker for unfulfilled romances and what-could-bes that are hinted at.

Wow, you've really imagined Varric to be some dashing prince who will wait for you... I've picked up a totally diffrent vibe. Strikes me as a "player" who likes to party. Not a one girl kinda dwarf... infact I can picture him saying JUST that.

Or, like I've pointed out, he could even betray Hawke. His attitude is very similar to a certain BG2 companion...

Of course with so little known, who knows? He may have a heart of gold... or he may just have a heart FOR gold.

I think you can be attracted to someone and not act on it without being a 'dashing prince.' You can even be that way while being a 'player.' The two aren't mutually exclusive.

I think Dave is just a die-hard romantic. A die-hard romantic who enjoys writing romances that will rip your heart out and make you cry.

Is there any other kind of romance worth writing?
By the way, I bet he loves samurai romance stories. They make for awesome tragedies.

I can't say for sure, but what we know of him and what we've seen is that he likes to tell a lot of tall tales, or just confuse Cassandra. I always assumed this was done to confuse her and take her off of Hawke's trail, to protect him/her.

He was the companion to the champion of Kirkwall. If he'd betray him/her, wouldn't he do it at the very beginning instead of retelling the story in a long elaborate way?

I'm just saying if LI status isn't possible, it would be interesting if that heart for gold melted in a strange sense of attachment for the one that got away.

i like to think that varric is ascertaining cassandra's motives and knowing what kind of person she is while he's telling hawke's story. to see if she can be trusted or not.
maybe that's just me

I see what your saying, and ya, I realise he could be the new Alistair... aka... the good guy, your buddy, your best mate of a sort (or LI possibly).

BUT on the other hand he easily be the roguish type. Not a good guy, but not a bad guy. A taste for greed, sneaky, and somewhat sleazy... but not stab you in the back evil.

THEN he could be stab you in the back sleazy.

As for the bolded part we have no idea of the context other then he's "telling" her what happened and f*ing around a bit. Now I could see him eaisly doing that simply to toy with her even if he will betray Hawke... he strikes me as the kind of guy who would draw it out and make cassandra squirm just for the lols.

He could also be toying with her cause he has Hawke's back and wouldn't betray him/her.

He could go so many diffrent directions. I keep comparing him to Sten, because, like I've said... people THOUGHT they knew what to expect from Sten. His fan threads described him as a gruff, proud, warrior. They were right... kind of. He was REAL popular pre-release, post release he had allot of haters. I like him though. Infact I love the entire DA:O cast! Yes even Zevran ;)

What they didn't guess was he was an ***hole who brutally murdered a friendly family. His popularity went from one of the most liked characters to right along Oghren.

Same happened with Zevran to a lesser extent. He was a charmer, an LI, had a large fanbase... little could they know he could be a real scuzball. Now he fluxates on popularity polls. Somtimes seeming more unpopular then Oghren and Wyne. Other times in the middle.

My point is, if Varric turned out to be a real dirtbag, it wouldn't be the first time the fanbase guessed wrong. ON THE OTHER HAND, Varric fans have been pretty spot on the money so far.

Could go either way imo.

So, Sheryl, What you're telling us is that Dave's ultimate job is not working for Bioware, but rather writing those books that used to have Fabio on the cover right? Posted Image

After reading one of the previews, I'm not sure if we'll get to find out how we meet Varric. It sounds like Varric just glosses over Hawke's first year in Kirkwall, and by then it seems they already know each other. I think it was the Destructoid preview that said that. But he also said that the friendships seem more organic because you're not wasting time building up a dialogue getting to know different people. You just already know them.

I'm 100% positive you will find out out how the met. I'm not 100% positive if you'll see how they met. It might just be explained via codex or spoken conversation.

I won't take it for gospel (as most translated websites I've seen so far have been wrong a lot) but apparently, according to the German interview, Varric is very popular and we'll see him again.

Link here.

Mark Darrah: Absolutely. I am sure we will meet again Varric, he is very popular. Cassandra has no major role Dragon Age II, but for Dragon Age III is very important.

So does that mean that DA3 will be more of a direct sequel? Or that DA2 puts events in motion that lead into DA3?

Ah, rampant speculation. How I love thee.

My guess is that Varric knows every friggin hero in Thedas personally, and has to tell their stories to Cassandra.
No, I guess that in DA 3 we see the results of what Hawke did, and we have to fix it. Maybe we will be a Seeker and thats why Cassandra will be important in DA 3?

But anyway, back on topic before we get locked.
In it's description it is said that Varric can make and break any legend.
Do you think that 'Make Legend' means that he has made other people rise to greatness?

Well, it is to be expected but I have a feeling the gears area already turning for DA3. All it will require is DA2 to meet (financial) expectations and we'll be seeing it. I would agree that it is likely to be a more direct sequel than Origins > DA2 as well, we'll probably get a big set up for a major event at the end of the game (to do with why Cassandra wants Hawke in the first place) and DA3 will see the consequences of that. Cassandra to be a companion in DA3! Really glad to see they have taken our love for Varric to heart as well, would be immense if he turned up in later projects.

Wait what? Cassandra a companion in DA3? Is that confirmed or speculation? I would love to have her in my party.

Plus of course they'll bring Varric back, who doesn't love Varric?

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the friendly-rivalry paths of Varric yet, awesomely named Authorized Biographer and Un-authorized biographer. Basically, friend means buffing for everyone in the party as Varric tells everybody how awesome you are. Rival means he buffs himself only, giggling madly at the satire he's composing.

Just saw the article...here's the bit from Mark Darrah about it:

Curse: Some of the abilities have very harsh sounding names, like "Scoundrel", do your actions in game affect the abilities you can choose or their affect on your character?
Mark Darrah: Yours now, but if you look at the abilities of some of your followers, one of the things they have is a rivalry/friendship ability. This is one of the things that changed in Dragon Age 2, it's actually OK not to be someone's friend, you can actually push them to the point of rivalry, but have them still stay in your party. So with VVaric; he get an ability called Authorized Biographer, which basically offers buffs for your entire party, if you're nasty to him, he won't leave but he'll get an ability called Un-authorized Biographer, which basically saves those buffs for himself
