No... niether were really a surprise. I'm pretty sure we knew they were romances a while before release... although I may be mistaken.
Generally LI's are the most important characters and/or the most attractive characters.
Most of the time, you can pick out a bioware LI pretty easily.
Varric is throwing everyone for a loop because he's a dwarf and very hairy... typically two things not associated with bioware romances. While attractive, he doesn't fit the cliche' mold that bioware LI's seem to fall into.
Bioware games (storywise) tend to follow a formula that evolves only slightly from game to game. Varric is a depature for many reasons. I think thats one of the reasons he's so popular.

Sort of like Garrus in ME2, then? (I haven't played ME or ME2 but I hear alot about Garrus in reference to other things) He's not your typical LI, he's a weird alien, he's got a nasty scar on his face, but he's got a great personality that makes people like him... Right?

Garrus wasn't designed as a LI. He's not one in ME 1. He became one exclusively for fanservice, as he might have been the most beloved companion from the game.

But what I'm saying is that he's really not the kind of normal LI that Bioware would typically have. And since his romance worked so well in ME2 (which again, I haven't played so this is basically heresay from other Garrus references), maybe Bioware is thinking, "Hey this unconventional character worked out really well for being an LI, what if we did this right off the bat with another unconventional character for DA2 and see where it goes?"

But I have no idea how Bioware comes up with their romances or storylines. I really felt like the romance with Carth was added as an afterhought in KOTOR.

Makes sense to me. They could very well be thinking along those lines. But Garrus and Tali were made LI's because they were already extremely popular.

Fans love Varric now, but we still don't know much about him. Who knows if he'll play out to be the character we suspect? So while Garrus and Tali were unconventional, they were also tested and extremely well recieved characters.

If Varric isn't an LI he might become one in DA 3 (considering that Cassandra seems to be important for DA 3 and they said we'll get more of Varric).

What they did with Garrus and Tali they could do with Anders for example...tested and wanted. But Varric was announced early on, and this might have had an impact (and changed his role a bit? to be an LI?).

This.

I do have a feeling they brought Anders back as an LI... I heard there was a screenshot of the "team". Anybody willing to repost?

[offtopic]I have never played ME1 but as soon as I met Garrus in ME2 I wanted him so MUCH! (despite very little dialogue; think about it) Personality wins. But yeah, he only appeared after high demand... Then there were two other fanservice choices (Thane and Jacob; one was DESIGNED for the sexy and the other... has really nice ass and abs but... let's just say failed with cheesy porno love dialogue [fem!shep's dialogue with him was just as bad])[/offtopic]

ON-TOPIC:
Well, as far as I know, when I first heard of Varric, i went "meh" but after I heard about his concept art (the infamous smirking one on the throne with a fuming Cass) I went "OMG that smirk!!! That chest hair!" And i'm not even a chesthair kind of girl. Then Mary fed us with Varric skits. Then there's Brian Bloom.

One thing is for certain, they seemed to have refined his look A LOT. I remember a dev mentioning the hair colour did go through a number of changes. And based on his screenshots, his face becomes more refined.

It was undoubtedly obvious that they seemed to have worked a lot on his looks and it was an early fan reaction but the game was already a work-in-progress so sadly, I am quite skeptical they would make a last minute adjustment to make him an LI.

It would be great if he already is an LI long before our mad fangirl squeeing. But like I said before, even IF he isn't an LI in DA2, he may be one in DA3... Heck, we might even get to play a dwarf with VO then B)

I would enjoy him as much as possible even if he doesn't have LI status. Heck, despite romancing Garrus in ME2 (and i really really LOVE him, in-game of course) I still enjoy Tali who no longer has yuri option in ME2...;)

Anders or Nate (i forgot bout him). I have a feeling one of them is the "Returning character" and also LI...cause for a human PC there is always a human LI...

As for the screenshot with Anders...well the presumed Anders...

Posted Image

But it appears to be early in the game somehow...Aveline doesn't have armor yet and Fenris doesn't have the chestplate...There are known companions in the picture, without weapons and more than 3 to call it a party. Maybe it's just a placement? Like they did in the trailer with CarverxBethany arriving in Kirkwall (which is impossible).

They've also shown together Isabela and Carver in Kirkwall, and supposedly that's not possible (as per the Escapist preview). Never trust a trailer.

Oh I love Anders. That boy cracked me up all the time in party.

Anders: "I do my best. Still, I'm no ale swelling mountain of belches like you."
Oghren "And I'm no winking, slack jawed coward like you."
Anders: "True! We should form a club!"

I can just imagine the kind of witty ridiculous banter he'd get into with Varric. I wouldn't care of Anders is an LI or not, he's too funny to pass up, and he's forward enough to open up more closed mouth characters.

Hasn't it been mentioned that either Carver or Bethany may die, depending on your class choice? Then again, I haven't read the Escapist preview.

That's what I meant. One of them will die, depending on your class choice. The trailer showed both of them together at Kirkwall. Thus, never trust a trailer.

Having Carver or Bethany die depending on Hawke's class sounds incredibly lame.

thought the word death is never used in there, it could be that both can survive but you only get one as a companion, and even then it could be just for the prologue section.

They also said that for the exagerrated part you get only one of them as well, but the other one isn't dead, right? He is just not there. So they might not die...They might turn into NPCs to take care over mom.

Point. Still, it'd be nice to see some Anders. So far, we only seem to have one smart mouth in the party (And maaaaybe Isabella. I could see her getting kind of tossy every once in a while). Another smarty would be great for banter.

Varric would whip that boy into a beer guzzlin' chest thumpin' man in no time.

Carver in the beginning : "... I.... Oh de-*FAINT*"

(TEN YEARS LATER)

Varric: "Go get 'em boy."
Carver: *rips off shirt simultaneously with Varric, blinding the oncoming Darkspawn with the glory of combined chest hair and mad pecs*

I bet Varric could amuse himself equally well with either sibling, for different reasons. He strikes me as someone who can amuse himself in nearly any situation.

You're right about that, he looks quite amused in the concept art. Even though he is being interogated.

But still, regarding Varric... He's running around with a shirt that practically opens up to his navel, and it's like, "Voila, I have chest hair, viva Tom Selleck! (Sean Connery, Brian Bloom, Austin Powers, other sexy dudes with chest hair)"... And I'm like, is he advertising or what? It's like men from the 70's with their big lapels, shirts unbuttoned halfway down their chest with a giant gold medallion, and you know it's like Larry from Three's Company where he's always trying to get the girl...

That's what I'm hoping for! That his goods are for sale, so to speak. But not like in a prostitution type of way.

He has Kepral's Syndrome and must keep his chest dry and well aerated.
