Finishing "act one" of the game story of Legend of Varric, expect a very long post. This is part one, I'll be taking a shower and post another soon.
The sun shined brightly in Varric's eyes, blinding him as he left the tavern following the quest giver. The town was exactly the same as he left it, though hours had passed inside the tavern where Varric was listening to the man ramble. Varric stopped in his tracks and waited for the quest giver to stop, he turned to look at Varric to find a look of anger in his eyes.
"Look, I don't even know you. You haven't even explained to me what quest I've somehow accepted and now you're leading me somewhere, in my game where I'm the party leader, without teling me your name." Varric demanded, the man liked it when Varric was being demanding in the inn but his face grimaced this time, a look of disgust before continuing to walk away from Varric.
"Wait a minute!" Varric cried out, running towards the man who kept moving away from Varric. Varric sighed as he finally caught up to the man who didn't stop walking, furious at being ignored Varric pushed the man to the floor to try and get an answer from him. The man looked furiously at Varric but didn't say a word. That's when Varric realized what he forgot to do, he didn't press the talk button.
After much apologizing through their trip out of town and allowing the man to talk whenever he pleased. He handed Varric a worn out painting of a man, a woman, and a little child. "My name is Sebastian, that's my family. Me with my little daughter and her mother." said the man, "she was a beautiful woman." Varric saw the sadness in the man's eyes, "She died when our daughter was a little girl, I've taken care of her since."
"What does this have to do with our mission?" said Varric, "Everything" he responded.

*flashback sequence, woooOooOoOOooOoOoO!*
Sebastian had awoken to an elven maid pulling at his shoulder, "She isn't doing good, my lord." Sebastian looked at the bed wearily before noticing the local doctor pouring a poultice into the woman's throat, Sebastian grew furious, "Doctor, that's not how you use a poultice!". The doctor stopped, swearing under his breath as Sebastian knelt down to hold the woman's hand.
"How's my daughter?" a loud booming voice echoed from the doorway, an elderly robed man entered the chamber followed by a handful of guards. "We fear the worse, my lord." said the doctor, avoiding eye contact to the man. He walked to the side of the bed, kissed the woman on the forehead before looking at Sebastian with a cold gaze.
"She isn't doing well, Esmund." said Sebastian to the man who didn't look away from him, "You shall call me by my title, you don't deserve to call me by my name." The man gestured for his staff and the doctor to leave, "For once in your life, Esmund! Lose the attitude, she's dying!" The two men stared at each other from both sides of the bed, tension brewing in the air.
"Had we not picked you up off that road, you wouldn't be here!" said Esmund, "She'd probably be married to that Guerrin kid instead of some peasant!" Sebastian looked away to stare at his wife on the bed, this was the last thing she needed to see.
Esmund quieted down, sat at the edge of the bend and held his daughter's hand, "Have you tried your magic yet, son?" asked the man, his rage now turned to sorrow as he gazed upon his ailing daughter. Sebastian shook his head sadly, the frowning expression returned to Esmund's face as he looked towards him, "What good is an apostate who can't do anything right?". Sebastian looked down in shame.
Esmund signaled the guards back into the room, his demeanor changing from furious to sullen, the guards surrounded Sebastian and apprehended him. "What?!" exclaimed Sebastian, Esmund ignored his screams and adressed the guards, "This man is a maleficar, he has poisoned my daughter. Take him to the templars.". Sebastian looked around in confusion, unable to think of anything to say as he was being dragged away from the room, from Esmund, from his Emilie.

Continued from this.
The cells were damp, cold and dark but none of this mattered to Sebastian, lying on the floor. All he could think of was Esmund and the unanswered questions, why would he do this? What would he gain? Sebastian knew that Esmund never liked him, though they've known each other for years and he had every chance to call the templar upon him. What else did he plan to do, did he have plans to get rid of his own grandchild too? Was his wife okay?
The questions lingered on in Sebastian's head for hours before the cell doors opened, Esmund accompanied by his guards walked down the stairs into the cells staring ever vigilant at their little "maleficar", making sure he doesn't try anything. "How are you settling in, Sebastian?" said Esmund, a smug look on his face, "I do apologize I can't leave you in your quarters, alas we can't trust your wily mage ways."
Sebastian stood up, looking Esmund in the eys and approached his cell door but was stopped by the guard's swords giving them a wide berth. "Why, Esmund? Have you been planning this all along?" Esmund smirked, he nodded "Of course, had she... not stopped me you'd already be with the Templar, I don't need damned apostates under my roof corrupting my people."
These words shocked Sebastian, he shouldn't be surprised considering he was never on good terms with Esmund but to hear them? It hurt him. "As for your daughter, she'll be well taken care of under my services. She's still the spawn of my daughter, even if she has some filfth in her."
"Don't you lay a finger on her!" yelled Sebastian, rushing to grab Esmund's throat but getting stabbed by the guards before reaching. Esmund looked down at his son-in-law, bleeding on the floor clenching his teeth in pain. "Arthur, keep watch over Sebastian while we await the arrival of the Templars." whispered Esmund as he was leaving, though before exiting the room he turned to face Sebastian, "Emilie has passed, I thought you would like to know."
Those final words removed all strips of defiance from Sebastian, he lied on the floor, bleeding and broken awaiting his judgement at the hands of the templars. Wether those words were true or not, if breaking him was Esmund's true motives behind them he had done it.
---
Varric interrupted the flashback sequence by waving his hands infront of Sebastian's face, Sebastian looked down at the dwarf and raised a brow. "What is it, dwarf?" asked Sebastian, still thinking of his past. "Well, first off, this is my story, who cares about you? Second, how is this relevant? Third, we haven't had a joke in forever and fourth, you're too distracted by thinking of your past that you're walking into the ocean when we should be going north."
"That we should" Sebastian added before drifting off back into his memor- "Now wait a minute!" Varric yelled out, Sebastian sighed and looked at Varric who was in the water up to his shoulders, "If you dream off now, you're still going to walk into the water and I don't want you to drown or else I'd have to go back to town and pay a priest to revive you. Let's go, out of the water now!"
Varric started dragging Sebastian back to shore, Sebastian thought this to be the perfect time to continue his flashback while Varric mumbled angry things.
---
"Psst... wake up, my lord." Sebastian opened his eyes, how long had he not moved? Were the templars here? "Hurry, we don't have much time." The voice of a delicate woman came from the edge of the cell, the blood loss made Sebastian's vision blurry and unable to see her face clearly. "Emilie?" he asked as he crawled towards the cell door, "is that you?" She gasped upon seeing the stab wounds, she opened the cell and came to him.
"No, my lord. Emilie is..." she said, Sebastian interrupted her and nodded. She took a poultice out of her pocket and pressed it to his lips and told him to drink, he shook his dead and refused, "My lord, you can't die! You need to drink this!" she said with worry in her voice. Sebastian had a look of disgust and avoided trying to drink the poultice, with panic in his voice he said "That's not how you use a poultice!".
He was in no shape to resist her for long, the poultice slowly crawled down his throat and he felt his wounds magically heal. He gasped as the pain went away, he chuckled "Guess I was wrong?". He rubbed his eyes, looking upon the female figure infront of her, it was the elven maid from earlier. "Wh-What are you doing helping me?", she shook her head and dropped a staff infront of him. "I cannot say, you have friends in high places. They wanted me to give you this." He picked it up the staff, gazed upon it's hilt where an inscription was written "From D.X Machina."
"Thank you." Sebastian said, she nodded and ran away leaving him in his cell. Alone in the dungeons, thousands of guards in the castle with templar on the way? Child's play.

Continued from here.
Varric was listening to Sebastian, unimpressed by his storytelling. Did he honestly expect Varric to be impressed by a lone apostate taking out an entire garrison, a handful of templars in enemy territory after drinking a poultice? Varric scoffed, "There should clearly have been a dragon there." he said interrupting Sebastian's story much to his irritation.
"Really? Do you expect people to believe a story if I throw in a dragon?" Sebastian questioned, "Do you know how foolish that sounds?" Varric shook his head, "I do it all the time, not my fault you're not half as good at storytelling." Sebastian clenched his fist, thinking if he should hit the dwarf or not but ultimately decided against it, that would probably deal two damage to him and every hit point is valuable.
As they kept walking down the path, Varric found a chalice on the ground full of ale and began drinking it, Sebastian looked at him worringly but Varric payed no heed to his looks, he's not party leader and can't do anything about it. Varric tilted his head towards Sebastian, "Seb, how's the story finish? You didn't finish it." Sebastian sighed, "Cause you interrupted." Varric shrugged, "I lost interest, can you blame a man if he wants dragons in his tales? It's like those Grey Wardens who want Gryphons in every story they hear about their order, I'm a story kind of guy though so every story has to at least have one dragon in it" before sipping ale from his chalice. Sebastian facepalmed, what had he gotten himself into?
"Well, after I got the staff, I was lea-" Varric yawned interrupting Sebastian's story once again, Sebastian grew frustrated and yelled out "That's it! Rocks fall, everybody dies!" and marches ahead on the path leaving Varric in the back, Varric sipped from his ale "What's his problem?"
It took a few hours of walking for Sebastian to calm down, he eventually came back to walk beside Varric where apologies were made from both sides. Sebastian laughed, "Well, actually. The last part of my story was exaggerated." he said, impressing Varric because he had believed it to be true. Varric felt there was a new challenger in his story telling domain, he took out his TO-KILL list and wrote down Sebastian's name before allowing him to continue.
Sebastian explained that actually, the female elf did show up but she took him out of the dungeons into the wilderness through an underground tunnel that was scarcely used and not even known to the guards. He explained further how he avoided the templars, went back to the manor and took his daughter with him to a tower in the wilderness.
Varric stared at him, "That seems a rather rushed explanation of what happened at the end, Seb." Sebastian laughed, "Hey, don't blame me. You're not listening and I'm sure if anybody is listening in on us, they don't really care about what happened to me." Varric nodded in agreement, though he was unaware of what he nodded too, he wasn't listening.
Sebastian was lost in thought for a while, Varric was busy thinking about dragons and wenches that he didn't want to interrupt his meditation. Varric finally remembered he didn't know what the quest was about, he looked up at Sebastian and asked him, he pointed at the tower in the distance "I'll tell you there."

"You want to learn why I need you?" Sebastian said as they approached the arches signaling their arrival to the tower, Varric nodded in response. "The stairway leading to my daughter's room at the top of the tower collapsed one day, I've been looking for help for weeks." Varric was confused, "Weeks? Wouldn't she have starved by then?", Sebastian smiled and added "She's a mage too." Varric was flabbergasted (*giggle* I wanted to use that word for a while now, don't judge me.).
They entered the great tower, it's structure covered in grass as if nature tried to reclaim it. Varric gazed at it's size, the Tevinter really know how to build their towers. Sebastian sighed as he walked in and noticed a pile of crates with a note on it, Varric approached from behind, "You sigh a lot, any reason?" he asked, Sebastian shrugged and handed the note to Varric.
"Dear Sebastian,
We're really sorry but when we accepted this contract to repair the stairway, we didn't know this tower was haunted. The ghost has claimed one of our people, we're not losing any more no matter how much gold you offer us. We've left the tools your funds have purchased for us, good luck!
~ Rick *lipstick mark*
xoxox"
"Are you... and him?" Varric asked, Sebastian shook his head slowly and Varric dropped the letter and backed away, "Okay then... let's get this staircase fixed."

GAME NOTES:
This was originally supposed to be the first dungeon, though a dungeon trek through mostly empty halls is unentertaining. So I'll explain how it would look like while we "dungeon trek".
There were to be four floors:
The entrance where there were no enemies in the "light", though if you went in the shade then you'd fight monsters. Sounds simple but that's when you realize if you want to explore you need to enter the shade. This mechanic was created because I wanted to test limited enemy areas, it was actually quite simple. The entrance would be filled with lights, so you'd encounter no enemies in the entrance but you'd have to return later from the second floor in dark areas. I had the idea to add torches that removed the darkness, though there were not enough encounters in the dungeon itself so I just made the entrance monster free with the mini-rooms covered in shadows.
The second floor was the main part of the dungeon, there were holes everywhere on this floor and there were no "safe zones" for monsters but they didn't spawn frequently. To move around into the holes, you'd need need a rope that was found in a chest to the north-east of the map along with the note above. The difference between the notes was that the game version added that the one guy who died was actually holding the last plank, the entire stairway is rebuilt except for the final step and Varric is too scared to cross over without covering it up. Once you entered the holes, you'd be brought back to the first floor "dark rooms".
Each hole had a little reward / incentive, a poultice for healing or Nutella (a character revive). Nothing big, the game lacked healing items and I didn't want the player to leave the tower and go back to Hannen because they picked the wrong hole and had to use the inn for healing. The only healing you had available was Sebastian's magic and you'd much prefer to keep his mana for combat healing when you actually need it instead of just using it to stay topped off because you fought a rat or a bat too many times.
Floors 3-4 will be covered in the story, they are more "story" floors rather than actual gameplay.
You were expected to finish the dungeon at level 4-5.
There was a sidequest when you found the plank where on the body of the deceased worker, you'd find a note where he said he wasn't killed by the ghost but by Rick who was jealous of his wife. He met with him and Rick threw him down a hole, blamed the ghost to the other workers and told the workers to avoid that area because it's "haunted". The man stayed at the bottom of the hole for a week or so, unable to climb back up, starved to death.
When you went back to Hannen, you'd find Rick with the wife and be able to pick for these options:
If you fought and killed Rick, the wife would cry and said that everybody is dying as of late. Varric would shrug it off, say it's a game and "people die". In the epilogue, she would eventually start a stall that sold clothes named after her ex-husband that would reach financial success and eventually make her start her own store in Orlais.
If you let Rick go with the wife, he'd eventually influence the grieving wife enough that they'd get married the following year. The marriage is unhappy with him and when she grows older, he leaves her to try and repeat the process with somebody else's wife. It fails and he's the one who gets left behind.
If you let Rick go without the wife, you'd get the killed-Rick epilogue where the wife starts her company but you'd also get a tile on Rick, he'd continue working for the construction company and on a job in the tower (again) at a later date he'd go investigate the hole where he killed the man. "Some workers say the ghost appeared before him, whispered his name and pushed him down the hole. The men left the tower in a hurry telling the public that the myths are true, it has been abandoned ever since. Some say during the night when it's quiet, you can still hear Rick's wails and cries for help." (my personal favorite)
If you told the wife about what Rick has done while he's still alive, she'd kill him in a rage and be arrested because she doesn't have protagonist-arrest immunity. It would say that when she was released from the prison, she went back to the tower in search of her husband and hasn't been seen since.
