Well... He does have "contacts". Or "people". At his disposal.
Maybe it was a master-crafted weapon made by a rival merchant family and given to an assassin to end with Bartrand. And after Varric knew about it and took care of it, he took Bianca to him as a memento.
We all know Bianca has to have a tale of its own to tell.

I have a question about DLC. I already have a thread about it but still, this is Varric related.
If Varric tells the story of Hawke, how will he do it with DLC? Tell the story of the DLC as well?
