It depends on his family behavior, really. Considering the amount of dirt he's willing to take on to keep his family safe - he's basically a spymaster and assassin coordinator to keep his family safe -, I'd say lawful neutral: Loyalty to his family about small things such as morality.

Personally, I think Varric is Chaotic Neutral. He's prefers good before evil 'it's better to have good neighbours than evil ones, after all' but isn't afraid to get his hands dirty for a good time. And plus, that Chest Hair is so enthralling, so diabolically brilliant, that it has to be just a little bit evil. So that knocks off chaotic good, hehe

I don't remember this being mentioned. I don't think they branch out much more than commerce and selling information, but I may be wrong.

They'd have thugs and guards, but I doubt they have assassins. *ponders* They might hire some other organization for that though.

I agree with Elrena, I think he would be Chaotic Neutral.

If not that then Chaotic Good.

I was undecided between Chaotic Good and Chaotic Neutral. Good, because he seems generally benevolent, but the Neutral comes to mind because he's not driven by his desire to do good, or afraid to get his hands a bit dirty.

Lawful Neutral is an interesting theory, but I don't think his desire to protect his family is the only thing that drives him, or is his personal code, as such.
