I'm not against a Varric romance, I'm actually all for it, I just think Bioware believes that having at least one human romance per gender is essential, and Sebastian doesn't count because he is optional DLC. If you heard Bioware staff talk before the release of ME2, they were shocked to hear that people would even WANT to romance bird-man Garrus, and they almost scrapped Thane's romance due to them thinking no one would want to kick it with a fish-man either.

Now, a dwarf is not as alien as either of those characters, but Bioware's polling data suggests that dwarves were far and away the least played race in DAO, while human was played by well over half of all players. That means the likelihood of them including a dwarf romance that over half their players are unlikely to see vs. a human romance which will inevitably be more popular is unfortunately unlikely.

There is a difference between playing and romancing a dwarf.

Anyways, I'm as pessimistic as when the first screenies were revealed.

Uh, what? They designed Thane specifically for women to find him attractive. That was the main reason the drell were designed as a species - for women to find something more exotic than a human and less alien than a turian attractive.

Also, he's more of a lizard-man.

Really?  You may be right, I just remember seeing a video with Bioware artists talking about how they had to move his design closer to human from early design concepts so that he'd work as a love interest.

I'm really just saying that Bioware's attitude towards non-human love interests has always seemed like "I guess...if you guys are really into that."  See Gaider's comments on finding a dwarf-human or dwarf-elf romance slightly icky.

Gaider's personal squicks have little to nothing to do with what could be written for the game. He's said THAT himself, as well. Considering Mary Kirby is writing Varric (and it's been said that he would not stop a romance from being written if it wasn't his thing), I'd say that line of argument is worth peanuts.

Thanks!  What a great article.  Love all of those design concepts.  So, it seems that they struck a good middle-ground there between slightly weird-looking human and completely alien gill-guy.

Back on topic: I'm not saying Varric is not a love interest, I'd like him to be, just because it would be something unusual and different, but I do think Fenris and Anders are more or less guaranteed to be LIs given past history and all the snippets we've heard.

Oh, and pseudo, I LOVE your artwork.  Keep doing what you do, girl.  Your DA page is a regular stop for me.

With design for video games a lot of the time it's hampered by the requirement that everyone share rigs and animations. That's probably why the Collectors ended up being bipeds despite there being concept art of them having more than four limbs. Some of Thane's crazier concepts might have required additional cost to get the point across. But uh, right. On topic! And thank you.

It's like rock paper scissors with LIs, except now by process of elimination (and Gideon) Fenris is all but confirmed.

It is necessary to be optimists and to wait for the best, instead of prepares for the worst...

Would you please care to clarify? Truly, the only one who is more likely to be an LI is Fenris, as he is the only character Mr. Gaider has written, and he has said that he wrote one of the romances.  There is truly no steady grounding with which Anders LI supporters have to insist that Varric will not be a LI and Anders will.

True enough. But do not underestimate the power of the Varric thread, my friend.  Even if Bioware stikes us down, we will become more powerful than they can possible imagine...

Was there really a Garrus love scene? I never pursued it but wasn't it pretty mild, like they bump heads in some awkward approximation of a kiss then never speak of it again? If not, then maybe us ladies will be lucky and get 3 love interests like in ME2, while fellas are stuck with just 2.

I thought the sex was implied.

Pretty much. Anyone who thinks the head bump was all that happened has no soul.

That said, i'm glad the actual cutscene didn't go any further. The way it played out, the emotional load was just about perfect. YMMV etc.

Yeah, really. As much as I love Garrus, I am not sure I wanted to see an awkward dry-humping scene with him or whatever.

If Varric is an LI and Anders is not, I will eat my hat.

I will eat my hat and it will be DELICIOUS.
