Beautiful as always Aimo!

I'm still keeping my optimism up for Varric to be an LI. I do think that Fenris will be an LI, based on what Gaider said about writing a romance over a ten year span. That doesn't mean that Anders has to be an LI, though... Because we do already have a human LI, and that's Isabela.

...It's possible that maybe they'll go that way? Varric, Fenris, Isabela for women, Varric, Isabela, Merrill for men?

Blind optimism (or pessimism if you're an Anders fan) post, go!

We're often hearing that Varric cannot be considered a love interest with the idea of Anders and Fenris being available, while of course this would mean pissing off some people if Varric should be a love interest... he'd ****** people off whether he be a love interest here or in Dragon Age 3 as we're often told to wait for.

The very same people that say they want Fenris and Anders and "sorry Varric fans better luck next time" would be furious if Varric returns as a love interest in DA3, DA4, DA5, DA3922. They'd always want both love interests to themselves and push Varric aside, saying it's their preference speaking.

[Note: Not talking to you, more the general attitude toward Varric in the forums] However, this very same preference associates multiple traits to Varric that are completely weird, simply because of his height? Do you think the people that go out of their way to say that Varric is a greasy pedophile or overweight car salesman would be saying the same thing if he was a human instead of a dwarf?

Some people would rather kill Varric than have the potential to have him flirt with Hawke, which is [Kaidan] pretty extreme, Commander.[/Kaidan]

They reason that Varric won't be a love interest because he's a dwarf, how does that change anything? He's still a person, he still has character, he still has lines that could be delivered romantically. How does his race in a fantasy setting impact him? Hell, half the people who say these things have signatures advocating their Garrus love. Couldn't the same be said about a turian? No, Bioware gave him a chance and he's one of the most popular female LIs because of it. (Though I made a comparison between a dwarf and a turian, I don't imply they are the same. Just comparing how people hated the thought of hooking up with a turian.)

What are the other possible LIs? Anders and Fenris, which both have deep problems and fanbases that would cry fowl if Varric were to be declared a love interest above one of them. These people love to insult Varric, say a lot of reasons why he shouldn't be a LI but when I bring up reasons why their respective LI shouldn't be a LI either they dismiss me because I have a "dwarf fetish"?

For sake of discussion, I'll ignore Fenris because we all but know that he's already a love interest. The second option for a relationship is with a man that struggles to retain his free will every waking hour against a demon, where he'll eventually won't be able to focus on anything else but fighting the Chantry.

It could be love interest material, maybe Hepler will surprise me but... to me, that doesn't sound very love interest to me. The relationship could probably work when Anders can think of other things, stuff like... flowers, nugs, Hawke and stuff. When he eventually can't think of anything other than the destruction of the Chantry, which he'll probably only follow Hawke because of mutual goals (assuming you don't side with the Chantry, which will probably lead to an Anders crisis) then chances are... he doesn't care if you're flaunting over him.

That isn't simple baggage.
Anders being possessed by the friendly neighborhood Spirit of Justice is baggage.
Anders being possessed by the unfriendly neighborhood Demon of Vengeance is a lot of baggage.
Anders being possessed by the unfriendly neighborhood Demon of Vengeance, struggling to fight to keep his will and being unable to focus on anything else and having a one track mind is the baggage cart of a train spilling over onto the baggage of before. With baggage.

Every companion has baggage but this doesn't seem like something Hawke can go fix by highfiving him, which leads me to believe the following:
  • Fenrisis the M/F Love Interest, Gideon and the whole stoic thing appeals to a lot of people. A lot.
  • Varric is the bisexual Love Interest, we have the charming suave merchant prince and his narration lines that people often bring up as being too expensive (which, to me, is no different than writing a romance line I think) change for both genders which should save resources.
  • Anders has Vengeance to keep him warm at night until the day he becomes an abomination and gets a cool outfit made of flesh. Any attempt to flirting with him would probably be dismissed because he's dealing with Vengeance or thinking of burning the Chantry down.

... and this is coming from a guy that actually likes Anders.

Anders seems a bit much like a Samara situation to me. You have the option to TRY, but in the end you're going to be pushed aside for some reason or another. Probably "for your own sake" or somesuch(which is too bad, because I loved Anders too. :( ).

Meanwhile Varric can give you as much love as you both like.

I like your brain, Mr. Canada. *puffs bubble pipe thoughtfully*

I will eat delicious hat if Varric is a love interest. Delicious, delicious hat. (I wear berets daily, don't you know...)

Dave, your posts are always so articulate and well thought out. Bravo! You make a lot of sense. I was thinking along those same lines, but I can't write it out as well as you.

Now, on the flip side of Dave's post, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate. Ander's personal quest is that you go to the mage circle to get someone into the Fade to kill the demon of Vengeance so that Anders can finally be free (a la Connor in DAO). Once you do that, he's happy and romanceable and becomes an LI.

Someone quote, repost or link it in the Anders thread. I want to see what happens. I dare not do it myself.

I don't think that's the smartest course of action.

Or you might be able to sway Vengeance back to being Justice.

Or at the very least knock some sense into Vengance until he becomes Justice again (I liked him dammit!)

Why? What's the point in starting **** with them for no reason? I'm perfectly glad to stay in my little corner, let them stay in theirs.

Honestly, there's no need for you guys to start being petty.  Anders has his share of petty fans, but so does Varric apparently.  We aren't all unreasonable dwarf haters.

I'm kind of liking the rivalry. When the inevitable reveal comes, the side that hasn't will blame the other side.

I get the argument for Anders due to the demon possession thing, but the writers are still calling the shots. Alistair and Morrigan came with a ton of plot baggage that we didn't foresee. Those relationships came at a high cost. A relationship with Anders can still be viable with the same high cost. Didn't DG say he didn't believe in happy endings when it comes to love? Even though he's not the Anders writer, they all do share feedback with each other and work as a team so the Anders/Justice combo is still very much in the running. The best evidence we can get are interview confirmations or the devs word. Saying the Anders/Justice thing won't work is tantamount to saying Varric  won't work because he's the narrator. It just doesn't hold a lot of water.

Yes, the height issue is silly, but that's a hangup that people have to deal with on their own. My best friend dated the most amazing guy in high school, but she couldn't get past the fact that he was shorter than she was. She felt very guilty over it and knew it was shallow, but it got to the point where it was a dealbreaker for her so she broke up with him. She got older and expressed regret at letting such a great guy slip through her fingers over something so trivial.

And please don't start a war in any of the other threads. I liked Alistair and Zevran in DAO, but I quickly dropped out of the original Zevran thread when they would antagonize the Alistair fans deliberately. Fighting over make-believe characters is ridicilous.

See, this is why I have pulled back so much from the forums, aside from this thread. I am not interested in the competition or rivalry and I find it pretty damn annoying, to be honest.

No need to get into that. We're mature, here, folks. And I can see the Devs closing both threads down for starting a flame war. So don't do it. We can speculate in our own little corner, like Yuki said.
