Now, on the flip side of Dave's post, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate. Ander's personal quest is that you go to the mage circle to get someone into the Fade to kill the demon of Vengeance so that Anders can finally be free (a la Connor in DAO). Once you do that, he's happy and romanceable and becomes an LI.
Now this is a toughie, I can't really figure out if Anders is
can be cured. We know an abomination that gives himself over willingly will remain human like Connor and can be cured, those taken by force are possessed into the flesh-monsters we see through out the game.
The problem here is, Anders let the spirit in but
not the demon. It's hard to tell which side of the coin Anders will fall on, case A or B.
Assuming it's case B, Anders cannot be cured and will struggle until he eventually loses or dies.
Assuming it's case A, we'd need a lot of ritual and quite a few mages to pull off this ritual... or blood magic, though I doubt they'd do a repeat of the Connor situation where you can sacrifice Isolde's twin sister or something. So I'll assume it's done with the ritual that leads to the fade, Anders is a
wanted apostate and Hawke can be one too which leads us to a pretty bad situation.
Would the mages assist them both? The only reason the mages helped our Wardens was because we stopped the destruction of the Circle and they owed us, this includes having the First Enchanter dealing with the situation personally. This is excluding how the lyrium required for the ritual is supposed to be a lot, though the mages would probably have this in storage somewhere.
Why would the mages help Hawke? Why would the templar allow them the help? Now it gets even
more complicated, assuming this sidequest is done after you've sided with either the Chantry or blew it up (which would probably put somebody in your debt somewhere) then... why would Anders still be there? He'd be completely devoted to destroying the Chantry, if you've already done it or something... he has no purpose, he'd probably become fully possessed at this point.
If it's done
during the war, where Anders is probably too focused on it as a whole, why would the templar or mages assist Hawke and Anders? They still owe them nothing and they are probably too occupied fighting the war to care about one apostate's fate.
If it's done before, once again... why would they care about Anders? You can possibly be an apostate, Anders is one and your sister (if she's alive) is one. You might also be carrying a Dalish Keeper around, which is usually bad news in public places. They owe Hawke nothing, they would probably hunt him/her down instead.
To me, the simplest explanation is most likely the correct one. Which is more... Varricesque.
Edit: We're off-topic, though. This is about Varric and not about Anders.
