This is not a major thing.   But in Mass Effect 1,  I just reached the first point in the game where you can now add in Garrus as one of your team mates.

My question is , is it possible to switch characters and the one your swapping out automatically gives his weapons and to the one your bringing in?

I ask , becuase otherwise I guess I need to remove all the weapons from the one I'm swapping out before swap in Garrus.  

I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something simple here.

No, only if you move the weapons(or any other equipment) to your inventory first.

Weapons and upgrades stay attached to specific characters, so if you want to, say, take away Garrus' assault rifle and give it to Wrex, you'll need to do that manually. Later on, there are lockers on the ship where you can adjust each squadmate's equipment specifically. Anything not equipped stays in your personal inventory.
