First of all, I love Dragon age, so please do not post here if all you're going to do is bash the game. I would love constructive posts that will help me fix this problem.

Secondly, here is the system I have it set up with, which may be unique:
OS: Windows 7 home premium
Grahpics: NOW i have an ATI Radeon 5870Processor: Athlon 64x2
40 GB HD
3GB RAM

This is where it gets confusing:
I don't have the game installed on the Hard drive itself. The fact is that there wasn't enough room on it for Dragon age. The game is installed on a 1000GB external Hard drive. I've been playing it for months like this with no problems whatsoever, the game works like a dream and beside the occasional bug that a restart could fix there was nothing going wrong.

Now some cutscenes (First experienced it on my fourth playthrough with the Lady of the Forest scene) are stopping altogether and lagging so badly that I cannot play them through. Regular gameplay seems unaffected. I can't imagine what is causing it. I play a retail version of the game and I believe I have the 1.03 patch.

When I try to install the 1.04 patch it says I do not have dragon age installed. I can assume that this is because it scans only my computer rather than the external harddrive which is where I have the game installed.

Recently however I've gotten into Mods for the game. Here is a list of the mods I have installed, please tell me if any of them could be causing the issues listed:
Dialogue Tweaks
Armor of the Devout
Armor of the Sten
Shadow Warden Armor
Sloth mage robe
Grey warden garments
Winter forge
Camp Storage Chest
Whiter teeth
Zevran dialogue fixes
More Hairstyles
Extra dog slot
Leliana Sings
Armor of the black fox
Dragon Age Modmanager

Most of these are just armor mods I know. The only ones that I could see causing the issue are Dialogue Tweaks or the Zevran Dialogue fix since those are the newest I've installed.

However, DAO Modmanager has also stopped working completely until I uninstall and re-download it.
Has anyone else had similar problems with any of these mods? Which ones should I uninstall to make the game stop messing up?

Have you tried to disable/uninstall these third-party mods? Have you also defragmented your external hard drive?

Concerning the 1.04 patch installation issue, if I'm right the patch installer does not scan your hard drives but read Windows registry to find if DA:O is installed on your computer. If you have moved the Dragon Age folder to your external drive after the game installation, the values in the registry are not correct as thus the installation of the patch will fail.

I will try copying that folder to the internal hard drive, thank you.

The issue did not start until I installed a couple of the mods, so I am uninstalling the newest ones now to see if it fixes the problem.

That did not appear to fix the issue.

What issue? 1.04 patch installation or cut-scene stuttering?

Both. I took out all of the mods I have on the game.

When I ran it again it still was not working. Sometimes minimizing it with Alt+tab works but other times it does not. Not all cutscenes are affected either. Currently I am stuck in the cutscene where the warden chooses the ruler of Ferelden. I have had to end the process several times due to it stopping but restarting it does not seem to work. It really is very frustrating. I had thought it was one of my mods but I completely removed all of them.

I killed fought loghain ten times last night, and as satisfying as that is....it's hard to go through a 10 minute sequence several times over because the conversation with Alistair after that whole scene kept stopping and I'd have to restart the game. T_T

Grahpics: Asus 1GB ENGT220 GeForce GT220

This might cause issues by itself as it is far below the minimum specifications for Dragon Age. The GT240 is the first card within the specifications and the GTS250 is highly recommended for decent play. I do not know if this would affect cut-scenes much, but it is something to keep in mind. Do you have an easy opportunity to try and play with a more powerful video card installed to see if that helps with any of your issues?

I actually don't think that is the cause. I was told when I bought the card that it could handle Dragon age perfectly fine and it has. I am able to play on the highest settings quite easily and have been doing so for months...

If that is the problem then I'm **** outta luck because I cannot afford a new graphics card right now.

However it's still doubtful to me...the problems didn't start until recently, after installing all of those mods so I believe that they are more likely the culprit.

TTBOMK, that's going to be a side issue.  Agreed that it is barely borderline for Medium Resolution and Low Image settings, in spite of assertions otherwise from lying salespersons.  Nevertheless, it should allow the game to proceed, if not either partuclarly attractively or sharply drawn.   However, Asus does include some seriously inconvenient optional software with some of their cards that has been known to create problems.

(And since I wrote that, the OP has edited to reflect a change from the borderline 220 to a high end Radeon.)

Managed to get my hands on a new graphics card today. (not new, but better I guess I should say.) It's an ATI Radeon HD 5870.

Cut scenes still lagging with the new video card? The ATI Radeon 5870 is one of the fastest cards out there at this time, so no worries there. What kind of speed does your Athlon64 x2 processor have by the way? Also, could you try disabling audio entirely through the launchers configurator and see if that changes the cut scene lag?

Tried disabling audio and everything. I finally gave up and had my computer tech friend drive his ass out here. He looked over everything and informed me that the old video card I had should have been sufficient anyway. His only suggestion was perhaps that it was an issue with the game itself at this point and I may need to completely uninstall and reinstall it...which would probably suck hardcore.

Have you cheked if an ATI High Definition Audio Device is present in Windows Device Manager? If this is the case, disable it.

He told me the same, and I made sure I did it. Still getting the stuttering.

Make sure to install the DirectX 9.0c version for 64 bit systems. If you have not done this already, do that first and see if it makes a difference.

If it does not, please post your speed and type of Athlon64 X2. If the processor is fast enough, I would recommend removing Dragon Age and reinstalling it without any mods or patches as a next step to see if that resolves anything. If you do this I would also recommend removing any PhysX support from your computer so Dragon Age can install its own version.

Thanks! I'll try that! Come to think of it I may have accidentally uninstalled DirectX whilst trying to free space up on my poor computer. (her name is Shelli, not that it matters XD)

I uninstalled the game and re-installed it onto a second hard-drive that I acquired. It remains to be seen whether the first issue is fixed, however the patch was successfully installed. Thanks for all your help.
