PC vs. X360 cover: problems with short cover and the auto system

So I've played ME1 & 2 for what feels like a billion times on the PC and decided to give the first ME a whirl on the 360 for the achievement points.

I've noticed, however, that I can't get into cover for anything that is shorter than Shepard's full body height.

For instance, take Eden Prime, walking across the platform to the train car controls which take you to the scene of Saren setting up the bombs. Absolutely none of those half-height blockades are usable as cover; Shepard simply stands like an idiot.

On the PC, auto-cover will automatically put me into cover for those. X360, I've tried pretty much everything from reverse backing into the cover to pressing enough combinations to qualify for my own special Shepard Hadouken move...nothing happens. I'm still standing there.

Auto cover works perfectly fine if it's full height, but anything around half height I don't go into cover, but sadly can see my squad mates using it just fine.

Is this a...feature...for the Xbox 360's Mass Effect?

you have to click the left stick to make him crouch before you can get into the shorter cover.

Do you have the latest patch? In the first version of Mass Effect 1 Shepard doesn't always crouch behind low cover. He'd stand there very exposed.
