In fact, if you announce that you're a mage then he says he's far too busy to worry about chasing down apostates so that goes to show he's not a fanatic, either.

I did that on my last play-through, and Morrigan said "Me too!" laughingly from behind me. The guy looked like he wanted to stab himself in eye. I replayed it a few times, giggling away. :P

Which scene is this?

At the Lothering Chantry when you talk to Ser Bryant.

Wow talk about making a bad day worse.

Yeah it's not fair really as he seems like a really decent guy, but my mage couldn't resist. Morrigan was a terrible influence on her.

Thats what I liked about DA, the Templars are supposed to be these horribly devout and dedicated warriors, yet many that you meet seem like decent, compasionate, and well meaning people.

Ser Otto, Bryant, the Templar that took Wynne to the tower, Gregior to some extent, and Sir Bram(?) from the mages origin.

I don't particularly hate any character, but Oghren and Shale tend to stand out, simply because I am utterly uninterested in dwarves, and Shale is annoying. Orghren is disgusting, and never leaves camp . . . . lol.

No one forced her to go along with Jowan and she got just as much out of it as he did.

Of course not.
But he knew about her beliefs and how she resents blood magic and he lied to her and studied it anyways.
She didn't hide anythign from him and he hid the most important thing.

She was the victim and not him.

She jumped through a lot of hoops to work out a means of getting into the phylactery chamber and went so far as to seek the help of a harrowed mage. She had every oppurtunity to stop and refused each and she had every indication this was likely to spiral out of control but pressed forward.

Lily was not a victim. There was no one coercing her into anything. If Jowan had some how behaved like an abusive partner or she weren't in complete control of herself the entire time, I'd agree with you. But Lily knew what she was doing and what she was getting in to.

Lily thought she was helping her innocent, victimized boyfriend who was in no way, shape, or form a blood mage but just lacked the power to pass a Harrowing escape a horrible fate. The part that makes her a victim is that Jowan was guilty of exactly what he was being charged with and had she known, she never would have had anything more to do with him let alone helped him.

Except Jowan wasn't a blood mage until he was trying to figure out how to get himself and Lily out of the tower. He says that he learnt it all for her. I'm not sure if that's true, but from the conversations he had with PC, it does seem Jowan and Lily had been together long enough for him to study blood magic. PC even says at one point s/he thought Jowan had been making up said girlfriend.

I don't think Lily was a victim, nor was Jowan really. It was a mess of decisions made by a young couple in the midst of first love, while trapped in a place where it could never really happen. Both ultimately paid the price, though I do think Lily got the worst of it.

  Nope, Jowan knew it before.

PC: Jowan, why blood magic, of all things?
Jowan: Why did I turn to it in the first place? Hah. You'll laugh at me. It's because... because of you, really. I have to admit, I've always been a little jealous of your ability. I knew I'd never be as great a mage as you are. In a moment of weakness... I thought blood magic would give me more power... more control. Isn't that stupid?
PC: All this because you were jealous?
Jowan: I knew it was wrong the minute I started. I swore never to use it again. And then Lily came along...She loved me for who I am, flaws and all. For a short time, I was happy with who I was. And blood magic was behind me. And... then we heard about the Rite of Tranquility. The rest, as they say, is history.

Yes, this is if you're a mage and go in to kill him (I think you can still back out after you get the story).

lol I sometimes wonder if we'd been introduced to 3 or 4 chevaliers who don't go around raping peasant women how people might feel about Orlais.

Heh. You know, I really want to hate Leliana. I am a blokey sort of woman who doesn't understand women's fascination with shoes (the only time I get excited about footwear is when I go shopping at Nike Town), is deeply suspicious of anyone religious, and has a similar outlook on Orlesians to Loghain (perhaps this is also because I'm English and we have a longstanding rivalry with our neighbours, the French. Damn them and their fine wines and cheeses, innovative perfumery and delicious cooking!)

Yet I can't help but like Leliana. Grrr.

I don't particularly hate any companions, but I somewhat dislike Zevran. Don't have time for his antics.
And Alistair...now that one is a completely different story. I imagine Alistair is BioWare's answer to us poor souls who dared complain about how Carth whined constantly. The guy can be such an adorable cute puppy if he's in the mood, but...one wonders how Duncan would react if he saw Alistair crying all over the place like this. Duncan who never wastes a moment to remind us that a Grey Warden must always press forward if we're unfortunate enough to let out a tiny little "I'm still in shock" in Ostagar.
- I know I shouldn't break down like this, but...*sob*
- Duncan risked a lot to save me from the Chantry. I will always...*sob*
- And then he drinks all of us under the table. Ho ho ho. We Grey Wardens had fun, too. Duncan enters the hall and laughs until...until...*sob*
No way it can't be intentional.
As for NPCs in general... "T-gaaahn!"

Sorry, I kind of like a guy who can grieve through tears instead of getting drunk and throwing things around the house.  Besides, Alistair's tears never kept him from cutting huge swaths through the darkspawn hoarde whenever I needed them.  To make matters short, Alistair can cry on my shoulder anytime. Saying that the only options for grieving are crying or getting drunk and throwing things is really a false dichotomy, you know.

OMG, I think you just described myself!

Leliana's girliness should be a turn off for me yet it isn't. I adore her. I guess sometimes opposites attract?

Not that girliness is everything there is to Leliana. I guess that also plays a part.

I can't say I "hate" any character, because most of them sold well and are well written, even as characters I "love to hate". I can say I dislike:

-Leliana: Extremely overrated that she gets her own pointless DLC. When she said that line about her "being any kind of girl someone wants" it just told me how manipulative she really is and how she lives in her own fantasy world. In most of my playthroughs she either gets no love or gets left for someone else, heck even the one who stayed loyal to her wound up sacrificing himself.

-Howe: Just evil...plain evil. Especially in my human noble playthroughs the guy is just cold and twisted, not one good bone in his body. Good thing he can be executed.

-Velanna: The classic "poor me my people were oppressed I have a chip on my shoulder and every right to be hateful my people are the best we had this superpast but they stole it from us but don't you dare hate me" type. Plus she's hideously ugly. I can justify the elves being that way in Thedas but she just goes overboard, definitely designed to be a jab at people who are like that in real life, so I like her as a character design even though I can't stand her personality.

-Vaughn: The way he thinks he owns elven women and treats them like property, sorry but the guy is just a flat out jerk. Even as an "evil" elf I make sure he's gone.

-Oghren: classic drunk dwarf with alpha-male Spike TV humor. Good with some banters but gameplay wise he falls faster than Sten (and he gets two specializations) and I just find him repulsive. I leave him behind in Awakening as soon as I can get Sigrun or Justice.

-Connor: The little brat is never worth the trouble. He went as soon as he called my elf "knife ears" (and subsequently on most of my playthroughs since he's rarely worth the trouble if at all).

-Cailian: I'd hate to have someone that stupid rule a country in real life...

Is it really fair to blame Connor for the demon insulting you? Really?

Indeed.

If you're gonna judge Connor it would only be fair to base one's judgment on the actual Connor, the one you meet upstairs. That little boy, the one who wasn't afraid to die if it helped stop all the chaos... yep, he was alright.

Cailian might actually be better than most gutless politicians that runs the countries in real life. At least he has the guts to fight his own battle and stood his ground before the darkspawns.

Yeah, whilst I'm not much one for kids, Connor's blameless in this instance. The demon is in control at that point - speak to him upstairs and he's an alright kid. His dad, on the other hand... *gnashes teeth*

I don't have any hated characters in the actual game, but in Awakening, the only reason I'm going to recruit Velanna is because I have a "get everyone in the party that you possibly can" thing. It's like she's Morrigan without the excuse for lack of compassion/interesting backstory/entertaining dialogue/overall awesomeness. :| I also realize I probably spelled Velanna's name wrong. She was actually the only character my main warden wasn't willing to accept her personality. I still like that dialogue choice you have, for some strange reason. "It has a tree on it. You like trees."
