My thoughts are that the Mattock is a brilliant weapon for any character. It combines the Vindi and the Revenant into a single, potent rifle. Perfect for defence stripping.

I tried it and didn't like it with my Adept, the ammo is far too low. I think the Geth Pulse rifle or Vindicator are far better alternatives for stripping defenses, the Mattock shoots to kill
The Vindicator does everything the Mattock does, only slower.
The Geth Pulse Rifle is a pile of turds. Why on earth anyone would pick ARs and ignore the Mattock in favour of that is anyone's guess.
If ammo's a problem, just pick up the Locust. Better DPS than most ARs anyway.

Then a Locust would be better, because ammo IS a problem for defense stripping with the Mattock for an Adept.JaegerBane wrote...

Adept already has the Locust anyway. I use Mattock first to inflict massive damage. Most fights are over before running out of ammo, but if it runs out - fight is already won and you can use SMG or HP to kill to kill everything still standing. The only thing I don't like about the Mattock is the ammo-searching after each fight.

The point is that you don't have to choose between the Locust and the Mattock on an Adept.

Is my install bugged as I've not even read about this feature?!?! It's more annoying that casting+zoom when a sniper rifle is equipped!
Whew, it was a glitch... reloaded and it works like I expect. Now if I could just buy a backpack from DAO to carry some spare clips/heatsinks...

I use the AR (I don't have access to mattock, so I use the vindicator) as my new anti-armor (screw the pistol) and use the locust for EVERYTHING else. From the stats and description I figure I would use the mattock in much the same way making ammo a non-issue since I only use it on one enemy type. If it's a level with nothing but armor then I just bring along a character with aoe anti-armor abilities like incinerate or reave and just use them and the locust for minor enemies and the AR for krogan and such.
I agree with this, and the Mattock makes that choice even more distingluished. In the past, it was a tough to decide between SR or AR for armor damage. SR had the highest damage, but the scope is detrimental to the adept and the sentinel; both of these characters rely on spamming warp/singularity/pull to boost their weapon damage in conjunction with warp ammo. The sniper zoom makes it very difficult to rapidly switch from throwing a biotic curveball to shooting while you’re on the run. If you chose AR training, you often run into the problem of overlapping into SMG; Avenger and the Vindicator were versatile, but armor damage was only marginally better to the Locust, so you end up not switching to ARs at all in most situations.
The Mattock is a sniper rifle without the scope. It has very low recoil, you can feather accurately from the hip immediately after throwing a warp ball while strafing from cover to cover. The only drawback is the lack of ammo, but you should be reserving the Mattock for heavy armored enemies anyways. I have taken out YMIR’s armor in two volleys with Mattock + warp ammo biotic bonus. Because of this, AR training no longer seems redundant to SMGs.

Sniper zoom will only be activated when; behind cover and/or when holding the zoom button (RMB on pc) - out in the open you can use powers the 'normal' way.
Mattock (and Vindicator) are better against all defenses (not just armor). If you go for AR training use AR whenever possible. Vindicator has enough ammo capacity to be used for entire missions. Mattock is a bit behind, but I rarely have to switch to SMG/HP with my Adept (only when you're out of luck; when enemies don't drop ammo clips to be picked up during the fight) - but yes, Locust is an excellent standin when the situation demands it.
Best bonus weapon for Adept is the GPS - too powerful in my book, but if you want to bring down powerful enemies fast - GPS is what you want.

The Vindicator has 9.5% more total damage than the Mattock counting mag + reserve, but the Mattock is more efficient with the ammo it has since no burst fire means a. much less overkill, b. only one round instead of 3 wasted on a miss.

Tbe main reason I stick to armored enemies is to conserve ammo. The locust smg is deadly accurate at range and gets its own bonuses to shield and barriers as well as a MASSIVE ammo count so I use it whenever possible. s

They are nice, but not better than my usual setup: Predator, Tempest, Viper.
I tried replacing the Viper with the Mattock, but I just couldn't get into it. I like the viper better for stripping defenses... personal pref. not a stats pref there.
Same with the tempest over the locust. Just couldn't get into the locust due to the lack of ammo. I spent more time finding clips than playing and the tempest just works better for how I play. If anything gets past my biotics, the tempest is a great little needler!
Teh M5 is merely OK. The slow rate of fire really does me in. I don't need a sniper pistol. I need something that removes armor quickly. Maybe for a different class, the m5 would work well, but not for my adept
Still like the weapons, though, just not on adept. I bet they'd be the bomb with a sentinel or soldier!

All in all I think Locust is perhaps best allround weapon in ME2; good against all defenses; lots of ammo; decent clip size; highly accurate; performs well at all ranges - very versatile. I used Vindicator before getting my
hands on Locust for its versatility, but now I use Mattock (whenever I'm not using SG) bonus weapon.

I don't like SR on casters (zoom + pwr using is annoying) though Viper is great for stripping defenses medium-long range. Mattock is better though; higher dps, no zoom plus its effective at short range too. Never ran out of ammo with Locust, don't consider Tempest to have an advantage here. Tempest has slightly better dps at close range and huge clip size, but will lose in the accuracy department - great SMG nevertheless. I see why you don't need M5, if you already have Viper for long range combat, but I love the new Phalanx on my Adept. I use SG most of the time, Locust for medium range and defense stripping, Phalanx comes in handy for long range engaments - love the laser aim.
But in the end it's all about personal preference - I'm not one of those maximizing dmg output / 'best' build - guys. I play to have fun and all ME2 weapons have their uses and are fun to use.

Totally agree i'm now playing all the classes in newgame+ solo insanity these days thanks to the Mattock & GPS & it now feels like i clear rooms almost as fast with my adept as i do with my vanguard when i can just toss a Singularity at a mook & then pretty much have his defences already stripped thanks to the Mattock by the time Singularity hits at which point Warp is ready to fly.
Solo insanity adept is a beast of a class thanks to the super fast defence stripping of Mattock

Yes, it is about personal pref. as I feel I kill better with my loadout. I really wanted to like the Locust, but since I cary the viper, I've no need for long range accuracy and the tempest is just better at dealing death medium to long range. Well, for me it is anyway. I like weapons that fire when and as often as I press the mouse button. That means I need large clips and large ammo reserves. But, that's just me. I think I like that mainly because as an adept I'm using powers more than weapons to kill...
