About the reapers:
I'm not sure if anyone already thought about it, but what if they aren't bad at all?
Maybe they are a safety-mechanism to preserve the galaxy.
In ME2 we learn, that dark energy is destroying suns and everyone is interested in it.
Some already mentioned the dark energy could come from hidden reaper-devices, but what if the accumulated mass-effects of all the council-species(+others) technology destroy the universe overtime?
The first species may have been confronted with the problem that their stars died and other reeeaaally bad things happened. Finally they found out that the mass-effects of their technology did something with the structure of space itself(sci-fi-physics. 'What happens in black holes?' and other things real physics have no complete answer yet).
So they developed the reapers and they where the first to be molten into their creations.
The reapers used the old mass-relays of the species they descended from to build a trap so they'd find any space-faring species that would come up.
Over time the reapers 'optimized' their work, building devices to use the species they should kill to kill it(dragonteeth, the stuff that the miners in minos wasteland encountered).
Really creepy stuff, barely any organic species would come up with.
They multiplied, growing in numbers so they where able to win direct confrontations.
In order to minimize their impact on the universe with their own me-based technology, the reapers go into hybernation when there is no civilization to wipe out.
They take all the technological advancements they can find, so that no upcoming species may reverse-engineer it.
Also the period of 50000 years may be based on forecasts of the first species.
So much for the reapers, therefore I'll continue with the asari.
Seriously: Vigil told us that the top-scientists of the protheans where on the citadel and had the equipment to rewrite the keeper-controls and we believe they just died?!
There are proteine-vats that the keepers have, the keepers are mostly organic for what we know and somehow they survived on the citadel.
Wether the keepers where in stasis or lived with the equipment the citadel houses, if the protheans where smart enough to rewrite the citadel-systems for the keepers, they should have been able to modify the keeper-equipment to keep themself alive.
But even if they could keep themself alive, they surely wouldn't have a high enough number to keep their species alive.
Oh...and how surprising...each asari can mate with every other asari and every other sentient species, also they live arround a thousand years to encounter other sentient species.
All of them have extensive biotics, weapons and barriers from biotic brains.
Almost perfect weaponized sentient beings.
The asari also found the citadel first.
Rather than found, they could also have been made there. So I think the first asary where the genetically modified prothean scientists or breed and instructed by their creators.
By now, only the highest ranked asari know about it.
Asari that never leave asari-space in order to minimalize the risk of being indoctrinated like Liaras mother was.
Arguments for this could be their mindreading-capabilities to transfer informations(just like the prothean beacons) and the little scene in the bar on illium, the bachelor-party.
Everyone likes the asari, everyone finds them sexually appealing.
Maybe the asari look completely different from what we now see. Maybe Liara, Samara and co all look like monsters with claws, able to rip us apart. Only humanoid enough, to use the armor and equipment other species in this shape come up with.
Also Samara points out(take her with Jacob to illium and ask Jacob about the bar), that the bar is just a face the asari show the universe.
All besaid features of the asari points to two possibilities:
They are a race made by the protheans to unite the races when it's neccessary. They appear friendly and trustful, also sexy, in order to be more appealing than a giant space-ship with tentacles.
OR: They are another race made by the reapers, sleeping until they will be activated by their masters to tear the other species apart.
They absorb the essence of their mates to integrate them into their offspring.
And in case of ardat'yakshi, the weapons absorb way too much.
