Its good that they are releasing this for the PS3, having exclusive games for a set amount of time is better than forever, but now the PS3 needs to give 360 fans something of equal value....

Yes! I love the PC version, I do, but my comp is no were near as good as a console and I really didn't want to buy an xbox just for the one game I love... This is awesome. Now if they'd just do the first one too... *nudge, nudge*

I think all of the fan boy fears will end if Bioware issues a clear statement that maps out EXACTLY what this means for 3. The PS3 game will include DLC we know that so quit ****ing about it lol but the only VALID argument to come from this is how will this effect the trilogy as a whole. Will 1 matter at all to 3 if the answer is a definitive and official from Bioware YES then crisis averted, if they say that 1 will no longer matter then that a load of BS and I may just go to PS3 for 2 and 3 and call it a day but this unknown is why the fan boys and trolls keep lurking around on EVERY message board basically copy and pasting posts on them all lol.

As loyal Bioware customers I feel that we are at least owed a press release or a simple IGN interview to set the record straight for Xbox customers, good or bad we deserve to know.

There have been multiple interviews, look on IGN VG247 Gamasutra,

In Canada, there used be a large upper class department store chain called Eaton's. Because they failed to make business decisions to adapt to a rapidly changing retail environment; they went bankrupt in 1999. The company was founded in 1869--after 130 years of operating, a historic piece of Canadian history was lost in an instance. Eaton's went from changing the landscape of Canadian retailing to being a victim to it. In Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum of that chain, we have a statue of the founder Timothy Eaton--that's how important Canadians viewed Eaton's.

We need to take step back and think about Bioware for once--they are simply doing what they need to do in order to continue making games like ME and DAO. We should be happy for Bioware.

What business decisions did they not make or fail to adapt to?

I will attempt to answer your question the best I can.

There were a number of factors that contributed to the decline and eventual bankruptcy of Eaton's in Canada. The retail industry is quite different from the game industry so bear this in mind.

One of the factor's was the recession in the 1980s where Eaton's market share was taken by other Canadian retailers (HBC, Sears Canada, Zellers), speciality retailers, and eventually in 1990--big box stores such as Wal-Mart.

Consumers wanted lower prices; better financing options for large ticket items such as furniture, appliances; and better customer service. In its decline, Eaton's didn't have these.

Urban sprawl contributed to the rise of suburban shopping; whereas Eaton's dominance lied in the downtown core of large cities. More and more people lived in suburban areas; the rise of suburban mall shopping meant the influx of a large amount of retailers in one area; in this space and in their decline Eaton's was one of many despite its icon status amongst Canadians.

In the 1970s, Eaton's attempted to expand by building large shopping centres in small cities to combat the rise of suburban competition. As part of the Ontario government's Downtown Renewal Programme, Eaton's put up huge 'Eaton Centres' in small communities. However Eaton's failed to realize that part of what made downtown shopping unique were street related stores. The customers they wanted to attract went the suburban malls instead, leaving these places largely vacant with little foot traffic. For putting up large downtown stores in the wrong places and being a partner of the program, Eaton's invested a lot of money and lost a lot of it in return. It is now catalogued as a textbook case of what not to do. Eaton's didn't read the market, and didn't have a proper business case to justify the expenditures.

Consumer wise, Eaton's found they were no longer the 'store for young Canadians'. Much of the younger consumers had left them and increasingly Eaton's was seen as a place for older shoppers. Some speculate that Eaton's should have stuck to their guns and accept this reality--push the chain to only provide consumer goods for these people, instead of creating a new marketing campaign to appeal to young people again. Intrigued consumers attracted by the youthful marketing campaign walked into Eaton's and were thwarted by the older department store atmosphere. For older shoppers, the marketing confused them because they thought Eaton's catered to them. So you can look at this in two ways; Eaton's either failed to update themselves properly or they didn't capitalize on their new status as the older shopper retailer.

Other factors, during Eaton's decline, they failed to renovate many of their landmark stores and they soon started to look like everyone else. As above, it clashed with their new marketing campaign, and confused shoppers both young and old.

Interestingly enough, in 1976 the company cancelled their Eaton's Catalogue. Even though it was a money losing venture, when Eaton's decided to stop production of it, people were outraged. By this time 60% of their consumers lived within 30 minutes of an Eaton's; so the fallout of this was spectacular. It had to do with the fact that the catalogue, issued in 1884 was itself an institution. It was created to accomodate the majority of Canadians that at the time, lived in rural areas. This was no longer true of course, however people still held strong feelings towards it and it served to push people away from the retailer. Also in order to save money, Eaton's stopped sponsoring Toronto's annual Santa Claus Parade in 1982--everyone watched this either live or televised--people looked forward to it every year. Eaton's started it in 1905 and local businesses stepped in to continue operating it because no one wanted it to stop. We can look at this in two ways: Eaton's made cost cutting decisions in order to be in better financial shape which was the right thing to do however they didn't anticipate the fallout. Or these two decisions finally nailed the company's coffin shut.

It is standard business practice, but it's not universal.

Don't conflate or confuse the two ideas. Many businesses in every retail market give their consumers nothing beyond what they contracted for.

Bioware/EA have precedents for doing Stand Business Practices, I havent conflated or confused anything, to further illustrate my point you can refer to my subsequent point on pg 108.

regardless, there is a schism in pricing that seems relatively artifical, im not exactly sure how quantify it. Basically, for $60 the PS3 gamers seem set to get one heck of a deal when Comparing the 360 ME2 launch title vs PS3 ME2 launch title.

A "year wait" doesnt make much of a difference RE: Product was simply not available to "sole PS3 owner" so that point is moot

it really doesnt matter whats done is done. plus why not include all the DLC on the ps3? it can certainly fit all that dlc and since its already out on 360 its safe to say most ppl have it for 360. all the content being released on the ps3 would give people a reason to buy it for ps3.

I have to ask, why wouldnt you buy one of the best games of all time..........is the DLC incentive (not ME1 rehash, but others) the make or break selling point? It's arguably a better title than anything out on PS3 currently

well i dont want to buy a game for a console that i barely play and since it was already forseent hat mass effect was coming to ps3 i did not bother even getting it.

Not remotely my point.

Itachi, Et. al. are suggesting that they need extra incentive to buy it because its "a year old" by that time.

I'm not buying that arg one bit at all.

If they get all DLC inclusive, which looks likely, again I'm ok w/ that. The rub is throwing out a thanks to the Xbox and PC players.

you obviously cannot read all i said is WHY NOT  put all that dlc on the playstation 3. most people would see all that extra content in one disc for 60 bucks a deal. Releasing the SAME EXACT THING on the ps3 a year later. who do you think will buy that not many ppl considering most ppl have it for 360. plus i think you are going to hard with this if they have all the dlc on the disc they have it all. the only thing i care about right now is IF mass effect 1 will come to ps3.

Yes. Yes we do. Microsoft would not even consider putting Halo on any console other than the Xbox. Nor would Sony with Uncharted. Besides, Uncharted wasn't that great to begin with. To be more on topic, I feel somewhat betrayed by Bioware (or to be more accurate, EA). They're giving PS3 gamers content that 360 and PC owners payed, or likely will pay, their hard earned money for. And if they're not giving out the DLC as "bonus content", than what, PS3 exclusive content? That would just be a complete ****-slap to, oh, I don't know, their core f**cking fanbase! And there's no way that EA's money grubbing paws would never allow people who already own the game get the content for free even though it had been released free on the PS3. Let me end this by saying that I harbor no resentment towards the PS3 or PS3 gamers, it's a fine console and it certainly has it's place (as a high-def DVD player... no sorry, sorry). I would be nowhere near upset were it not for this announcement of "bonus content". I would be extatic. But this just makes my blood boil.

i guess, but the real thing is if the ps3 user base will get mass effect 1 i dont think so since they are going through the trouble to make the intro sequence to mass effect 2 to give backstory.

The sad thing is I actually think I would like Bioware more if it was still under MS, atleast they wont pull  this ****.
They should have fought for BW though, not just let EA have them, hell maybe ME2 would be more like ME1 if MS were publishing *sigh*.

MS didnt own BioWare so.....they cant let anyone "have" them. MS tried to purchase BioWare, but obviously the offer was declined.
