You answered your own question. This is controversial because of ME1 possibly not being ported.XX55XX wrote...
Why is this game coming out onto the PS3 so controversial? Everyone should be able to enjoy it, regardless of the platform they play on.
Though... why aren't they porting over ME1 as well?

Microsoft should spend money to keep their exclusives, see what happened Microsoft!!! SEE WHAT HAPPENED!? Microsoft Vs. SONY. Idk who's winning but Mass Effect is surely not in the picture since it's not exclusive anymore.

As for ME1. I really want ME1 on the PS3, among loads of other people..It really should be released..even if something like only having it digitally via psn or something. I don't care, as long as i can have it. but if it really CANNOT be avoided, I have a couple of ideas for the ME Choice system.
a) At the ME2 character creation screen, as well as all the normal stuff, add a sort of "fill in form" thing. like ______ Died on Virmire, and you just fill in which one you would of killed and which one you saved. this is pretty flawed though, because its still unfulfilling.
both of these have one main issue, their are still people who are PS3'ers and have never played ME1. Many PS3'ers won't understand whats being said and whats happened. I can just imagine the "omg who the f*ck is saren?" posts..
ME2 is a game which needs its predecessor with it..
Unless BioWare release ME1 for PS3, it's a horrible marketing choice, as they won't get near the same success as Xbox 360 and PC..

the only way I could be angry about this is if they miraculously got ME1 too, and BW restored the Femshep/Ash romance option.
Then i'd rent it on my PS3

Time for everyone to realize that it makes no sense for game developers to be system exclusive. It's also worth mentioning that M$ put unreasonable demands on BioWare for ME1 (all content on one disc, for example) which hurt the potential of the initial game. I think BioWare will do well now that they don't have to answer to M$. I'm glad Mass Effect 2 is coming to the PS3, though it should be bundled with ME1. I'd gladly buy it for the PS3 if I didn't already have it all for the Xbox 360. Kinda too little too late, but hey M$ paid to have it exclusive for a time.
Suprising news none the less. Not as much as Valve's announcment though, which was a real shocker.

However, if you get a video recap of all the story's main points; do you actually miss what you don't know about?
I enjoyed the personlaization of the IMHO minor changes to the ME2 story when importing, but the ending of ME2 was the same either way. I just feel sorry for PS3 users not getting the "import" bonus for an Insanity run (but, then again, they probably get the Firepower Pack for free).

Well congrats on selling the last part of your soul BioWare.
No loyalty anymore it seems.
How exactly is BioWare "selling their soul?" Because they're expanding their console options and trying to appeal to a wider gaming audience? Because (Heaven forbid!) they do want to potentially make more money? If BioWare didn't make money and wasn't as successful as it is, then the company wouldn't have created any great games past Baldur's Gate and KOTOR.
BW needs to accommodate ME2 to a new game engine, and put out the discs, and sell those units. That takes time and money! If few PS3 fan buys the game, it's a loss for BioWare. They're taking a gamble here. And BW doesn't necessarily "owe" loyalty to people who own PCs and Xboxes, because not everybody who owns those consoles owns ME1 or ME2.
From my own experience, it REALLY SUCKS when there's a game that EVERYBODY raves about and that I can't even try out and decide for myself if it's good or not. I've always wanted to try the Final Fantasy series, but I didn't have a Playstation. I can't play the original Half-Life because I don't have a PC. I can't play BW's Baldur's Gate (my boyfriend raves about it though...lucky guy).
As a person who's owned a Nintendo console for many years (got the Xbox a few years ago for Xmas), being left out of the loop sucks, although I could play all the Legend of Zelda I wanted. Granted, there are worse things in life than not being able to play a game, but companies would've gotten more of my money.
In short: exclusivity hinders both companies and the gamers.

Alright, so one of the big hooks for Bioware's ME franchise has been importing and continuing "your" shepard.
They just announced Mass Effect for PS3, but ME1 is *not*, and to my knowledge, not going to be available for PS3.
So essentially PS3 players have to play the default story in ME2.
This indicates one of two things;
A. Bioware is moving away from the lure of importing save games. This option doesn't bode well for all of us who want our decisions to matter/squadmates to return. This is a strong move into the "standalone game" direction
B. They're going to find a way to get the ME1 rights in order to put it out for PS3.
I think it means that PS3 owners will have less variables to draw upon, but consider all the choices that occur in ME2 that will still affect ME3, should BW produce ME3 for the PS3.
Maybe ME1 and ME2 will be put onto a consolidated game, like the Metroid trilogy for Wii, or Portal and that episode of Half-Life 2.
EDIT: okay, saw the IGN article that ME1 will be 360 exclusive, but...you never know.....
