Well Bloody hell, they weren't going to say "women" for a male Hawke were they? In Medeival fantasy games it's always going to be a default man, because they were the bloody people who fought in the armies in those days. In Final Fantasy games, it's always going to be a women ninja :P Chill out ffs, it's awesome, and heres hoping that fem Hawke is really...really...REALLY HOT.

I didn't suggest they use "women." I suggested they use the gender netural "people." I would also like to point out that the world of Dragon Age is a mythical world made up by game designers. Ergo, it is not real. Ergo, its history is only that what its creators decide it is. Although in midieval Europe women were never (rarely?) on the battle front, it's been shown in DAO that it's perfectly acceptable for women to be warriors and (supposedly) there is no bias against women fighting. Thus, I don't see why Flemeth, who seems to look down on men anyway, narrates about a destiny that only a MAN can have.

I don't care what gender issues Final Fantasy has because I'm not talking about Final Fantasy, I'm talking about Dragon Age and the choices EA/Bioware made in marketing it.

I just got onwed...anyway heres to Fem Hawke being HOT again :o:wizard:<3

P.S Men, do not try it with women...we can never win arguments...no matter how hard we try. We'd have to be Blackadder or Irenicus to do that.

Yeah...pretty much. It screams "THIS IS A MAN'S GAME, WIMMINS!".

I think that's a little strong, but they're definetly going for the gender stereotype cut-out of "bad-ass", On the other hand, Hawke does not look like a steroid ridden beefcake (like say, Kratos from God of War) so it's not so hypermasculine yet.

Anyone got the transcript of what Flemeth is saying? I'm not a native speaker and with all the other sounds I have no idea what she's saying.

''There are men who struggle against destiny,
only to have it swallow them whole...

And there are men, who embrace destiny
and do not show their fear.

These are the ones that change the world... forever.''

You realize that in more than a couple languages the all inclusive coed version of a word is the "masculine" version, right?  It's not that big of a deal, you don't see not-white people coming on here and complaining that they aren't showing other races for the main character.  Chill out, man and men can be neutral, all inclusive words, that's how it is.  Being politically correct has to stop at some point.

I am not talking about any language except English. And actually, yes, people DO point out how problematic it is that the main character is always depicted as a white man. I'd give EA/Bioware leeway on never showing women if in the very least they portrayed default!Hawke as a person of color.

I will accept "man/men" being somewhat neutral in a historical context, but in this day and age I don't think it flies.

@ In Exile: You're right, "those" is less awkward. And yeah, I'm over-extending it a bit but I'm seriously annoyed right now. :(

Doesn't sound like a trap. At all.

Can my friend Hawke and Horny Qunari come along?

Oh of course.

Back on topic, I really liked the trailer and I never thought I'd see any kind of gameplay. I'm just happy I got something and got to see the awesome that is Default Hawke.

Really a LOT of very short few frame images in that one section where things are changing quickly.

To actually make these out you have to do a lot of quick pausing. (I'm sure someone will break this part down in more detail.)

Some things I saw:

- Kissing pirate lady before she backs away with her sword drawn.

- Building on fire

- Closing (or opening in reverse) large doors into nasty looking area.

- Fighting some very big humaoind creature.

- Dragon soaring.

- A bunch of undead looking creatures, perhaps darkspawn but they look are wearing robes, large number of them.

- Fighting another large humanoid creature in a breach of a wall or door with two large nasty swords. (The creature has the swords)

- The classic Flemeth pose we have seen before.

I must say that I think the Origins trailer was better than this one. That said, this one wasn't bad, far from it. I wonder where Hawke picked up his fiery powers, arcane warrior perhaps? Or the result of weapon enchanment, and possibly armour enchantment as well. Hawke looks really good as well, as did the Qunari. This vid got me more hyped, at least :)

What I meant is that it's just a word, there's no reason to be up in arms about it.  Yes, people are mad about no black characters, but they're not making a big fuss about it in the main thread instead of talking about more important things like the actual content and reveals of the trailer.  I don't see why English has to be any different than any other language in that "men" can be neutral.  And yes, I'm a girl.  No, I don't see the big deal.  Don't let the little things ruin something for you.

This trailer made me like the NWN2 trailer more. I wonder if Obsidian meant to be subversive when they made that? Probably not.  At the time, there weren't as many bad-ass-hero-fighting-demon CGIs around (there was NWN's but not The Witcher's and this latest offering).
/pointless digression of no particular relevance

Anyway, the trailer felt hugely generic. Burning homestead? Check. Evil cult? Check. Boss fight? Check. Sultry love interest? Check. But what the hell, I'm still hyped for DA2.

As for Hawkes firey powers, i reeeaaaally doubt it's an enchantment all things considered, i'd sugest looking beneath the claw armor hand of his

I don't think a company should get a flyer on inclusiveness if they show a racial minority and sweep gender under the rug.

The problem is that to a certain extent, you cannot design a game to be racially inclusive or cosmopolitan as easily as you can design a game that is gender inclusive.

To get a racially inclusive world, you'd want to aim for something like Earthsea, or the way Jade Empire was set in not-China.

The thing is, you can have proper gender portrayals just by avoiding stereotypes with either gender. It's not as if typically we design monogender fantasy races (aside from the girl-on-girl fantasy that is the asari, and I just do not want to touch that particular stereotype ridden mess), so gender portrayal should be held to a higher standard because of how much less work it involves.

I appreciate the sentiment - to an extent. Not being a woman, I can catch the intellectual problem of not being inclusive, but it's not as if I feel excluded, no?

Yeah your eyes don't glow red because you have a magic sword. Usually anyway. It is definitely either blood magic or another kind of magic/blood power we havn't seen yet.
