After some banter Varric reveals that the Chantry, a church group that worships The Maker, is in ruins, the world is on the brink of war and the church needs Hawke to help reassemble the pieces.

But I want my Hawke to be anti-Chantry :(

Given how Bioware games traditionally operate, I'm almost certain you get to decide how you handle the chantry.

On a side note there were some things in that article that make me hopeful about how this story may be told

Yeah, I'm liking what I'm hearing so far. Interesting to hear about the increase in enemy tactics, hopefully that'll put a little of the speculation of a lessened focus on strategy to rest. All in all, I'm super excited for this now.

"I sliced through Darkspawn effortlessly, my blade sliding through the
ugly creatures as if they were made of butter. Meanwhile, my mage
partner eloquently set the remaining foes aflame. After obliterating
enemies with such ease, I realized that this was a much different Dragon
Age than I was used to, "

..... oh really.

Ooo...Carver. We have a brother, and he has a name.

Oh, look at that. Templars are allowed to get married?

Hmm, what does she mean by this?

http://pc.ign.com/articles/111/1113408p1.html wrote...

There's no more fancy armor or strong abilities in this tale – just
Hawke along with his younger brother Carver, a warrior, his sister
Bethany, an apostate mage and his mother discussing their escape plan.

Aveline looks bad. ass.

Also, I'm calling Wesley and Carver as the two that die. Wesley is already injured, and Carver is probably very young. Beth has a much better chance at surviving then either of them, considering she's a mage.

Sounds extremely good. Especially the fact that they are keeping the awesome interface intact for the PC version. There should be no fear of a botched up UI as was the case with ME2. :)

She means that the narrator Varric was exaggerating before - you don't start off like that in the real story.

Think Metroid.

I believe Varric (SP?) is embellishing part of the story, and this acts as a sort of tutorial to get the hang of some of the advancements the combat system is going to make--then you end up starting from scratch.

My take is that in the opening sequence Varric is exaggerating and Hawke is being portrayed as a super-hero with fancy armor that can slice through darkspaw like a hot greatsword through butter.

When Varric re-assumes the narrative it is much more grounded in reality.

Oh hush Salibh, for all we know he could be a retired templar who ran away but still believes what his order stands for.

Or perhaps maybe Templars are actually allowed to marry?

I think she means that in the intro of the demo, Hawke was decked out in super armor and slicing up guys because Varric was exagerating. In the next bit, because it's presumably around the beginning of the story, Hawke was much more sparsely equipped, like in DA1 when you start out with less good armor and such.

At least, that's my interpretation of it.

So it's Garret (or Marian), Bethany, and... Carver?

Hm.

I wonder what the "rest of the family" back in Kirkwall are all about? The rich and snooty cousins, who'll look down on the poor relations fleeing from rural Ferelden? Image IPB

That is really the only feasible interpretation of it.  I agree with you.

All in all, that is quite a good article, especially compared to the ******-poor article IGN posted after San Diego.  The information is interesting, and it is starting to give me a feel for how they game could be, including its similarities and differences to the first game.  I look forward to more article impressions.

The textures on the armor and such in those new screens at IGN look....bad. I thought the reason they were axing the isometric view on PC was because the textures were so awesome?
