In original game it IS clunky. Sometimes character moves towards an enemy and start twitching in one place instead of attacking, or turning around VERY slowly. Looks retarded. These things are gone for good.Binee wrote...

I find this so obnoxious.
It is only obnoxious if it isn't true...Binee wrote...

For the most part, leveling up is similar to the first game. ... The ability tree is what the team focused on re-constructing
and it looks promising. Instead of linear progression, different types
of abilities are grouped together in a tree. For example all abilities
that involve using a two-handed weapon are bundled together and
abilities that require a one-handed weapon and a shield are grouped.
Abilities can also be built out further than before, as most active
abilities can be upgraded at least once.

I think your mom is almost guaranteed to die. Moms never fair well in fantasy stories. I'm guessing either Avaline or Wesely won't make it either. If after escaping Lothering your next destination is Kirkwall someone with Templar connections would be the most valuable companion. Having Wesely or his wife along would make sense.
I think the final answer of who lives and who dies might surprise you. Might surprise everyone, in fact.

Now, the first part sounds like he was just describing the original game, as the different abilities were bundled up there as well. What is meant exactly by "linear progression" vs. a tree?
After some banter Varric reveals that the Chantry, a church group that worships The Maker, is in ruins, the world is on the brink of war and the church needs Hawke to help reassemble the pieces.

Just a guess, but perhaps it means that you aren't forced to take the preceding talents just in order to get one of the higher level ones. For example, in DAO if you wanted Critical Strike you'd have to take Pommel Strike, Indomitable and Stunning Blows. Maybe in DA2 you could take Pommel Strike, Shattering Blows and Onslaught and still get Critical Strike, rather than being locked into one path.

The rest of the game is Varric's elaborate fanfic.
