Probably, I'm just really bitter, because there just does not seem to be an adequate reason for her to not be romanceable.

doesnt she have a husband who died?  I suppose there is a 10 year span....but maybe she's fiercely loyal.

It's really just a personal thing. I'm a die-hard romantic. Being able to help her out with just that scenario would have been a powerful investment of time. To be honest, I don't think I'll hear an adequate reason, but I would like to hear the reason.

I know how you feel, but when you take away the frustration, the idea is brilliant. From a certain perspective, you can see what the writers are trying to do, and it's very unique.

Think of this particular situation: your Hawke is interested in her, you pursue a romantic path with her without looking at the other LIs. When the path comes full circle, she says she can't be with you, but as the story moves on we get to the end of the game, she says that she learned a lot from you.

That way she moves on with her life.
Heck, she might even give Hawke a kiss on the cheek and then everything fades to black.

Guys, there is always fanfiction and fanart :) And mods!

I sensed somehow that she isn't a LI from the beginning, she is still suffering after her husband. Maybe he married her at a very young age or given her a better life so she feels empty without him. We'll find out more in-game.

Thankfully yes. I never use mods (don't ask me why) but I love fanart and I enjoy reading fanfiction from talented individuals. Mr. Gaider disapproves of them

Some news for you guys, in case you hadn't heard yet:

From the interview SFX had with Mark Darrah, Executive Producer:"(...) Hmm. In many ways Aveline is the toughest character we’ve ever written, she’s got iron in her soul! I like that uncompromising willingness to be a defender, to do what’s necessary to protect what she’s needs to protect. She is not a romance option for the player but there are things with her later… she can come out of her shell to some degree! (...)"

Sorry :/

I'm so sad that she's not a LI :( I wanted her for my m!Hawke. Oh, well, guess he will become some sort of Petrarch and will be writing sonnets to her during all these 10 years until she gives up :) Then I'll write a fanfic about their wedding.

A little part of me was hoping that she would be a LI for Fem!Hawke  Posted Image   but no biggie. It will be fun to get to know her. I guess that one of the reasons that I wished for Aveline to be a LI is that she seems to be such a interesting person and I really wanted to know more about her. Sometimes that isn't possible, you can end up with a situation when it's "if you're not going to romance me I've got nothing more to say to you". A little like Jack in ME, I believe that a male shep gets to know her better. In Dragon Age we have the friendship path so I think that we will get to know them well regardless if we romance them or not. I guess that old habits die hard for me    Posted Image  just realised that I had that notion that unless you can romance the person you probably won't get to know them that well. Will try to stop thinking like that and I really look forward to meeting her ingame  Posted Image

See this is kind of mixed news for me to be honest. I wasn't sure if I even wanted Aveline for a LI. I mean she's cute and all that...but the whole husband dying thing right when we meet her kind of painted Hawke in a horrible light if he started a romance with her right away.

But now thankfully I can be content with maybe flirting with her after a few years. XD

I can't say I'm not disappointed... but I'll be (nearly) as happy if Hawke can still have a good, friendly relationship with her, helping her out 'n' all that.
She seems to be one of the more complex character on offer, and BioWare seem to be praising both her and her quest(s), so not all is lost. ;)

I actually think I prefer the idea of her not being a potential love interest for Hawke. Not every relationship has to be of a romantic nature. We have to remember that she loses her husband at the beginning of the game. Some people never get over the loss of their spouse. Lukas' wording makes me think it is possible she might end up together with someone else, though, which could be cool. If the supporting characters are only there to be romances for the lead character, I'm not really sure if they could be considered fully-fledged characters. This is an RPG, after all, not a dating sim. The companions are there to serve the story, not our whims.

I didn’t write Aveline as a love interest, but more importantly, I didn’t write her not as a love interest. Scratch your head about that one, but I think it’s bearing fruit in the reactions.

Interesting comments. What I read from that is, "I want the player to, if they're going to pursue Aveline, to have their emotions tied to the pursuit as much as a real person would. To connect with Hawke's feelings; the tension he feels, wondering if she'll ever move on and give him a chance. To, for once, not assume 'X character WILL BE MINE eventually because X=Romance Option' like they knew with Morrigan and Leliana."

If Aveline is a kind of option, she seems to be the type where you either (a) pine for her for a long time and bear a fruitless love in your heart for, which she cherishes but cannot return; or (B) the same, but if you played your cards right over the years she might one day accept the possibility of romance, but you'd have to really roleplay the kind of character she would fall for. But probably no sex scene would happen, it would just be a walking into the sunset kinda deal.

Maybe it's foolish, but I still have a little hope left here. Tiny little bit. And maybe that's the best perspective with which to treat the situation regardless, for roleplaying purposes. Maybe that kind of investment is its own reward.

Am I seeing a little bit too much into these words?

I read that, I wept.

Dave of Canada wrote...

How would you guys feel if she's a
non-romance but there's no sex and only in the ending / epilogue she
acknowledges you? The entire relationship is courting or
something.

I'd be as happy as Tiny Tim.

So.... my fit of rage passed (and I got some sleep) so I can think clearly and I can only say that  this kind of thing is what I really really love in novels, comics and now (maybe), in games.

Here's some new speculation questions:
1) Will Aveline get over Wesley's death faster if we choose the friendship route and not the rivalry one?
2) Will she get the puch-a-darkspawn skill like Wynne got her special in Origins or is that her finishing move if unarmed?
3)Will we hear Aveline-Ser Pounce-a-lot banter?
4)Will Aveline punch us if we are far into the rivalry bar?

I like the idea, and it's way better than getting absolutely nothing. Hawke may not achieve anything in the end, but even if she hints at a "maybe" when the story is over, then it's ok by me.
