Probably, I'm just really bitter, because there just does not seem to be an adequate reason for her to not be romanceable.

doesnt she have a husband who died? I suppose there is a 10 year span....but maybe she's fiercely loyal.

I know how you feel, but when you take away the frustration, the idea is brilliant. From a certain perspective, you can see what the writers are trying to do, and it's very unique.
Think of this particular situation: your Hawke is interested in her, you pursue a romantic path with her without looking at the other LIs. When the path comes full circle, she says she can't be with you, but as the story moves on we get to the end of the game, she says that she learned a lot from you.
That way she moves on with her life.
Heck, she might even give Hawke a kiss on the cheek and then everything fades to black.

I sensed somehow that she isn't a LI from the beginning, she is still suffering after her husband. Maybe he married her at a very young age or given her a better life so she feels empty without him. We'll find out more in-game.

Thankfully yes. I never use mods (don't ask me why) but I love fanart and I enjoy reading fanfiction from talented individuals. Mr. Gaider disapproves of them

From the interview SFX had with Mark Darrah, Executive Producer:"(...) Hmm. In many ways Aveline is the toughest character we’ve ever written, she’s got iron in her soul! I like that uncompromising willingness to be a defender, to do what’s necessary to protect what she’s needs to protect. She is not a romance option for the player but there are things with her later… she can come out of her shell to some degree! (...)"
Sorry :/

She seems to be one of the more complex character on offer, and BioWare seem to be praising both her and her quest(s), so not all is lost.

Interesting comments. What I read from that is, "I want the player to, if they're going to pursue Aveline, to have their emotions tied to the pursuit as much as a real person would. To connect with Hawke's feelings; the tension he feels, wondering if she'll ever move on and give him a chance. To, for once, not assume 'X character WILL BE MINE eventually because X=Romance Option' like they knew with Morrigan and Leliana."Lukas Kristjanson wrote...
I didn’t write Aveline as a love interest, but more importantly, I didn’t write her not as a love interest. Scratch your head about that one, but I think it’s bearing fruit in the reactions.kylecouch wrote...
Just once, just once Bioware...I was hopeing JUST ONCE you would break the habbit of makeing cliche LI's.......damnit man...
If Aveline is a kind of option, she seems to be the type where you either (a) pine for her for a long time and bear a fruitless love in your heart for, which she cherishes but cannot return; or (
Maybe it's foolish, but I still have a little hope left here. Tiny little bit. And maybe that's the best perspective with which to treat the situation regardless, for roleplaying purposes. Maybe that kind of investment is its own reward.

Am I seeing a little bit too much into these words?
I read that, I wept.

How would you guys feel if she's a
non-romance but there's no sex and only in the ending / epilogue she
acknowledges you? The entire relationship is courting or
something.
I'd be as happy as Tiny Tim.
So.... my fit of rage passed (and I got some sleep) so I can think clearly and I can only say that this kind of thing is what I really really love in novels, comics and now (maybe), in games.
Here's some new speculation questions:
1) Will Aveline get over Wesley's death faster if we choose the friendship route and not the rivalry one?
2) Will she get the puch-a-darkspawn skill like Wynne got her special in Origins or is that her finishing move if unarmed?
3)Will we hear Aveline-Ser Pounce-a-lot banter?
4)Will Aveline punch us if we are far into the rivalry bar?

But probably no sex scene would happen, it would just be a walking into the sunset kinda deal.

I like the idea, and it's way better than getting absolutely nothing. Hawke may not achieve anything in the end, but even if she hints at a "maybe" when the story is over, then it's ok by me.
