Also, from what I've seen of Aveline and Wesley, they're rather cute together. He doesn't seem put off at all by his wife bashing in faces and saving his life, and he didn't get all uppity about Hawke's teasing/insulting. He seemed to have a nice temperament to not be at all concerned with his wife out-badassing him.

To me, that's really sweet.

He seemed normal but unremarkable to me. I didn't get a feel for his personality. Not only has he been cut into but the taint is already rapidly spreading through his body, which would tend to slow one down anyway.

I could, of course, be interpreting it wrong. I just thought it quite commendable of him to not even mention the mage-bashing portions of the chant when Bethany dies.

"Normal" and "unremarkable" also isn't that much of a downer to me, as Aveline seems like the type to like stable and baseline rather than flashy and exotic.

Amusingly, the F/F thread largely agreed she was butch. I'm going to guess the only connotations in your mind are negative while we skew to neutral or positive.

I assume the average Templar wouldn't gloat over the death of a mage in front of her family. My interpretation has always been that they're more sympathetic to mages than the average population.

I don't think we are going to get a real good feel for his personality because, as you said, he is infected with the taint and dies in the beginning of the game. Unless we learn more of him by talking to Aveline throughout the rest of the game. That is going to be my guess anyway.

It's always hard to judge these things with so little context, and you could certainly be right. There is likely much more to his character than we know at this point, judging by how anguished Aveline looked in other screenshots. I tend to find him sympathetic, at least, which puts him in a positive light. That could definitely skew my perceptions of his actions.

Not really...I just don't consider her a "butch" because well...I think a butch is different...I won't really go into that however.

That word falls far short, but it's in the right direction.

I've not paid a great deal of attention to the DA2 developments and press releases but Aveline is the companion that's taken my eye the most. The beatdown on that hurlock was impressive. Looking forward to using her in game.

It says something about a character that one of her first awesome moments is seen within the first minute of meeting her.

"Aveline likes him so he's probably a decent bloke" makes sense to me.

It's sort of like your sibling in your first playthrough. If I pick a mage, I have to sort of take a leap of faith that Bethany is someone my PC would have cared for and that her loss is meaningful. Likewise, Aveline protecting her husband and grieving over his loss means the player needs to value Wesley.

Now I need to find the word for that.

I'm not sure how that doesn't fit with what I said. What does the word mean to you?

I may have simply misunderstood...I'm having one of those "slow days"...butch imo is like...really manish and brutish. Basicly a man in a womans body. While that may be what your talking about...she just don't fit my personal definition because she's still very womanly from what I've seen. It's more mannerisms then physical appearance imo. So to me shes still very lady-like...she can just shatter your face lol.

Is sympathy insufficient?  Or even trust.

Right, and brutish is hardly a positive attribute whatever the gender. That's what I meant about the word having negative connotations to you while having neutral to positive connotations to many of the people in the F/F thread.

Aveline's Wedding Night

Wesley: Look at this. It's like sneaking into an apostates hut: heavy risk. But the prize.
Aveline: I was wondering when you'd show. What's your intention, Wesley?
Wesley: To give maleficars ever kind of hell I can, martyrdom or not. But until then, I want all the time I can get. Live, die, doesn't matter. I want you.
Aveline: Sounds like you need to make every minute count, Ser Vallen.

I've had mine since the dev diary that unofficially revealed Merrill. I took a screenshot, cropped it, and replaced a DAO character portrait with it.
