Aveline-Lawful Neutral. Aveline is a woman of justice whose primary concern is with enforcing the law and ensuring stability in the volatile political climate of Kirkwall. She does have a set of morals but she does not believe law breaking is justified even if the law breaker may have good intentions. We saw such an example when confronting the Arishok about the two criminal Elves who had converted to the Qun. Aveline felt they had to turn themselves in even though she sympathized with their rationale somewhat.
Would you all agree with this?
No. There are too many instances of her being either Neutral (something, most often Good) or (something, most often Lawful) Good within the game to support a LN outlook. Overall I'd say Aveline is a very good example of Smart Lawful Good, she has compassion, feels sympathy for the plight of people, and works within the rules to make things better overall. A LN person simply cares about the law, a LG person cares about the effect of those laws on people, and will work to change those laws within the system if it's warrented.
One of the very first things she can do in Kirkwall is help Hawke to bully the merchant into paying Athenril (or that mercenary guy too), and she does it simply because of the way he had just treated a Fereldan refugee. That's pretty NG to me, if not bordering on CG. This could indicate a NG person with Lawful tendencies, but the weight of her actions within the game makes me stay on the Lawful side of things.
Having said all that, the Dungeons and Dragons alignment system is rather simplistic, and doesn't really encompass the subtle nuances of a person's morality.
