If Aveline's Friendship/Rivalry is not of a certain value, she may leave the party if Hawke sides with the mages, and refuses to assist her during the forthcoming battles. What do you think of her actions, and any hypothetical reasons for her reacting in that manner? Do you believe that it is consistent with her character? Is it a manifestation of her devotion to her subordinates in the city guard? Have you an opinion about the confrontation with Hawke?
As a passionate Aveline fan, I have my own theories and beliefs concerning her actions, but I'm interested in hearing what others may think.

Damn it! Aveline was the only, the ONLY female I REALLY would have enjoyed a romance with. Nothing against Merril (too young) or Isabela (She does not like to stay in one location for long). Aveline just fit that niche that I love about women that I would love to have as a romantic interest....and she is un-romanceable...the pain Bioware...THE PAIN!
Dude! I so agree with you. Aveline was the best potential romance for my Hawke. While she cannot replace Morrigan, she is definitely the next best female character in the DA franchise. I was upset when I figured out she was unromanceable as I avoided spoiler until I finished DA2.

@LesEnfantsTerribles - I'm sure it has to do with loyalty. If her loyalty to Hawke (manifested by friendship/rivalry) does not equal or exceed her loyalty to the guard, she'll side with the guard.

What do you think of Aveline's relationship with Isabela?
Imho, at times it can get really aggressive (The Long Road) but not always, especially towards the end...
(The image above is purely for laughs)
I enjoy watching them argue AND getting along ^^

I just think Aveline is adamantly heterosexual. If Isabela woul kiss her in such a manner, Aveline would probably slap her. Very sexy animation, though. Aveline is a babe. Isabela is nice too, but Aveline is better, in looks and personality.

Yeah, but she does still have "that" conversation with FemHawke post-The Long Road. Something along the lines of "could there have been something between us".

Luke did say that he'd consider the kiss canon if the image ended with her decking Isabela.Jarlof Seoul wrote...

I don't think that makes her heterosexual. Many queer women would respond to another woman ninja-kissing them with a slap while many straight women would handle it a different way.

I would say that despite her many run ins with the Templars that it comes down to 'Law and order'. She looks at both sides, sees the problems with both sides but still sees some form of law and retention of order if the Templars win out and sees more chaos (even if one can justify it as desireable chaos) if the mages win.
Things may not be nice after the Templars win but there should still be some semblance of a chain of command that can be rectified. If the mages win, probably more uncertainty. She and the guards may be having to deal with mages if the templars get defeated.

I find it annoying when people say X must be heterosexual/homosexual because they only ever show interest in opposite sex/same sex.
Believe it or not, it doesn't work that way in real life. Sexuality is far more complex than most people think. A person may not be able to change their sexuality, but you can't judge a fictional character's sexuality by the limited view we would get of them in a game/on tv/in a film/in a book. The only way to know is if the character in question actually SAYS "I'm not into X" or "I'm Y sexuality", and even then it's never a given because the character could be lying, or they might not know otherwise. (The author could say, but even authors can change their mind if it suits the story.) (And this goes for real life too - had someone asked me at age 14 how I identified sexuality wise, I'd have said heterosexual. However, three years later I was identifying as bisexual, and eventually as lesbian... Which is how I still identify, despite being married to a man! (It's a case of if it's you, it's ok, and it isn't without complications/problems. Warning, that link goes to TVtropes, one of the black holes of the internet!)

no offense meant. I admit I am a hetero and love chics. was always like a bull in heat towards them and still am. thus I am guilty of mirror-imaging Aveline. i don't judge differing tastes.

Actually, yes, I can do so.
You might not like the fact that I can do so and you might wish I didn't, but I can most certainly do so.
If only there were a literary point-of-view that let us experience the thoughts and feelings of a character first hand. Oh wait. There is!The only way to know is if the character in question actually SAYS "I'm not into X" or "I'm Y sexuality", and even then it's never a given because the character could be lying, or they might not know otherwise.
You can only make that claim if you're going to say that no one knows their own sexual orientation under any circumstances.
Seriously, I have three 150K+ novels of Phèdre nó Delaunay engaging in graphic sexual acts with men and women, which she obviously enjoys a great deal. Are you telling me that there's no way to judge if this character is bisexual or not?

Snarky!Hawke can kind of give it a try during her personal quest, but she is just not interested in you.
This to me, is part of what makes her awesome as a female character, especially when playing as Male Hawke. Hawke might have four other people willing to jump him, but Aveline prefers nice guy Donnic, the idea of getting with Hawke never entering her head. She knows what she wants and it's not the PC.
For one of the main female NPCs in an RPG that's pretty unusual.

So. . . is it just me, or is it kind of awesome that Aveline is such a great character and very-definitely not an LI. Because I see lots of players wishing she was and all I want to say is: but the fact that she's not is part of what makes her great.
