I like her, but now I'm starting to wonder what Wesley saw in her. Or what she saw in him.

I think Aveline's really pretty. Also, it's hard not to be impressed by a woman who can bench-press a cow.

Because of how popular he is and all.

I <3 Wil Wheaton. I met him at PAX, and acted like a swooning fangirl.

As for Ser Wesley Vallen, I don't remember who named him. Might have been me, but if he's named after Wesley Wyndham-Price there's no reason behind it other than me liking the name.

I suspect that Isabala will be a female same-sex love interest and it seems unlikely that there would be two.

Not that I would object, mind you.

Though I suppose I would have to pick between them, which would be... odd.

That would make for an awkward moment, because rather than doing the "you need to pick between us" conversation, Aveline would beat the ever living snot out of Isabela for macking on her LI.

In theory. ;)

Interesting!

May I whomever was her main writer(Luke?), why he wanted to write Aveline? What about the character did he find appealing?

Sorry, can't really say without spoilers, but Aveline has elements that I hadn’t touched on in a few years and just wanted to take a shot at. You can tell by looking at her that she’s driven, but she’s got some competing traits that were fun to balance. Plus her place in the story gives her an interest in all the other followers, so I kind of get a piece of them as well. But all the writers do, really. Defining the weave of relationships has been interesting for everyone on the team. The DAII characters are fitting together in ways that aren’t immediately obvious, and the time factor allows us to do some neat things.
So, you know, I hope you like them. Or hate them for interesting reasons. Six of one.Image IPB

EDIT: Did they forget to add a knife there? It looks like she's slitting darkspawn throat with...atmosphere.

I believe that's the part of the cutscene where she is punching a darkspawn into submission. PUNCHING. For daring to attack Wesley.

Yes, it is awesome.

The record bench press lifter person couldn't lift a cow. Well, maybe one. But one on the small side. Barely. Assuming beef cows, of course, and not a small breed.

I was mostly kidding about the cow thing.

We just happen to joke a lot about the things Aveline can bench press.

For example, here's a conversation I had with Mary just this week:

Mary: Do you think Aveline could create a weight so heavy she couldn't lift it?

Sheryl: *horrified at the thought that there might exist something that Aveline couldn't bench press.* Ummmm... maybe? I... I don't know. I am disturbed by the thought.

Mary: Don't worry. I'm sure if Aveline created such a weight, she'd train until she could lift it. And then move on to heavier things.

real world =/= thedas

armor can be found at any weaponsmith's...cheap too depending on the material so...yeah it really does not fly

You know, I didn’t think I really had to explain the selective reality of game mechanics versus creating tension by realistically limiting resources, but okay. Yes, you can instantly change your gear in Origins, and every merchant has equipment enough for a battalion. That does not mean that living beings in Thedas have the innate ability to change their clothes in a blink, carry 20 weapons in a backpack at a full run, or strip every dead guy of armour that somehow remains perfectly usable despite the massive injuries that killed the man. You may as well ask why anyone ever dies, what with all the potions they could presumably choke down in any situation. These are all simplifications to allow the player to ignore mundane hassles until they can actually contribute to the tension of the situation, instead of merely complicating it. Tension like the terror of people fleeing with nothing before an enemy they can’t even comprehend, the tenacity of warriors who lose everything before an unrelenting enemy but still stand, or the heartbreak of unavoidable and possibly necessary death.

People also seem to assume that everyone in the game has the same starting point, that it was mandatory "lounge around in your armour" hour at the tavern as everyone calmly waited for the prompt arrival of the darkspawn. But Aveline’s circumstance is different from the Hawkes', and from Wesley’s. Her character will progress according to the situation she finds herself in. And I’m not telling you what that is, because discovery is key to the appeal of what we do. But she is no civilian who dresses for court. Nothing in her character blurb suggests that.

And yeah, I have no doubt that someone will eventually mod massive plate on Aveline or others from the outset, or change their heads to match some elusive standard of appearance. And you know what? Those same people will complain that the drama of their game somehow lacks punch, because what do these characters have to struggle against when they look like they lack for nothing?

Some of you have a fantastical ability to construct a worst-case scenario. You should get into game design.Image IPB

Perhaps the discussion of armor realism should be taken to a thread about armor realism and leave this thread to a discussion about Aveline.

Yay!

Will Aveline have an Orlesian accent, since her father was a Chivalier? Or will it be more of a mix, since she grew up out of Orlais?

Aveline has no memory of Orlais, and carries the accent of the country she grew up in. She is a proud Fereldan but, you know, things change in difficult times.

And that's exactly what her model looks like. I don't know if that's "de-beefed" or not-- she certainly looks fairly muscular to me, when I'm playing, if not "ripped" per se. Solid.

Of course, once she's in armour you see a lot less of her arms and such, but I think everyone gets the idea by then.

I'll hop around on one leg swinging an insence lamp chanting matras to keep away all the devs that are immune to the gargoyle and plushy on David's desk. You can use me as a footstool to rest your legs upon while brainstorming. I'll adress you as "yessir masta" and thank you for punishment. I will submit myself to the taint and drink an entire goblet of Darkspawn blood. I'll be a test subject to all your sick demented experiments. I will do all of these things and more if Aveline is a LI!

*And Luke runs from the thread, never to be seen again*

On the contrary, I am watching. Sometimes I tent my fingers and smile slowly, showing just a bit too much tooth for the comfort of those around me.

As the cold winds of the waking sea batter the mighty walls of the kirk, the champion stands with the shield maiden Aveline at his side and all the furies of fate and destiny cannot break them or sway them from their chosen path.
In sorrow and blood they met and at the first glance knew they would be forever entwined by the bonds of ill omen and doom laden destinies.

Varric rolled his aching shoulder, soothing an area conspicuously the size of a gauntleted fist. Aveline glared over a pointed finger.
    "That was for 'shield maiden.'"
    "Everyone's a critic," he winced.

Own your part of it. Players hunger for definitions so they can plan goals. I despise that characters need to be labelled as "romanceable" at all. Hate it. It colours expectation from the outset, like the difference between hunting and target practise. I didn’t write Aveline as a love interest, but more importantly, I didn’t write her not as a love interest. Scratch your head about that one, but I think it’s bearing fruit in the reactions. So do the impossible, forget you heard this. Because it’s not my job to give you what you want. My job is to hurt characters in interesting ways, and that includes the player character.

Come on, let me hurt you.Image IPB

Check a few pages ago or check the Bioware responses in this thread. Lukas said it himself. With no small amount of flippant dismissal... still bitter sorry.

EDIT:  Page 106 to be exact.

Now, now, my intent was not to say “ha, not yours!” My concern is that because of the label, players will not have the optimal experience. I don’t mean the experience of my writing; I mean the experience of “their story,” which is constructed not just by what we tell them, but also by what they assume during the experience. The out-of-game knowledge they bring to any character (not just Aveline) changes how they interact with that character.

Swap “romance” for “betrayal.” A betrayal can be interesting to dissect, but if you know a punch is coming, you flinch. Everything said has a different context. And if you know it’s not coming, that changes interaction too. For characters and plots to have real impact they need honest emotional investment, and that’s a fragile thing easily spoiled by being aware of the existence or nonexistence of a mechanic/label. The curtain is there for a reason.

If I had my way, you wouldn’t know who is what. I don’t want you to play any character as a “romance” or “non-romance.” I want you to play and see what happens. Without honest emotional investment I can disappoint you, but I can’t hurt you.

Or bring you true joy, but I'm mostly about the hurting.Image IPB

Let's pull this back onto discussion of Aveline. If you want to continue to debate the morality of sexual activities, you can do so elsewhere.

'Sall in the hands of the evil one (and by extention his unspoken overlords). I imagine he'll string you along for a little while longer, which may be just as well. I'm going to make some of you feel bad about your spirited dismissals of a certain templar.

In the meantime I'll just...
Ask weird questions!

To mr. Lukas or his long lost evil twin:
1)Aveline's hobbies?
2)Favorite colour?
3)Favorite ale? (if any)
4)Favorite food?
5)Phobias?
Nevermind this if we'll get to know that in the game...

My twin was not evil. Or, technically, "lost." Image IPB

1) Traveling with Hawke, clearly. Copper reliefs.
2) Green.
3) Mead is a trickster and too sweet. Light red wine, a recent inclination.
4) The "what food is she" answer serves well enough.
5) We'll see.

Let’s see, rescued from a dangerous thing by another dangerous thing. Was I saved or was it a t-rex/raptor thing where the winner gets to eat my remains? Yeah, things are unraveling at a fairly brisk pace and I’m inclined to give him a pass for his caution.

Unless you'd like to suggest that Aveline chose her mate poorly. I believe you've seen an example of her debating the darkspawn on a similar topic.Posted Image

The upper left option has a silhouetted profile icon, indicating that it’s a "Follower" dialogue choice. These appear when a follower can contribute to a conversation because of a particular ability, connections, personal knowledge, etc.

The outcome being what it is, Hawke's real decision is whether or not Aveline seems like the kind of person who wants decisions made for her. It certainly sounds like it will help define your character and illustrate hers.
