someone should get on that and make it happen. If not in game, then in a DLC

*ahem* Bioware*ahem*

psst... take the hint.

And it's not like we're picky. Expansion, DLC... maybe even a patch :innocent:

Pfft! You guys aren't picky... office LOL.Posted Image

Oh we are picky.  We picked the most awesome character you guys have created, but you all picked not to allow us to have her.

It causes no end of amusement here in the writing pit that the hypothetical romance I didn’t write is/would apparently have been/is better than the actual romances you haven’t seen. A quantum state, like assumptions about the playfulness of Schrödinger's cat and, I don't know, Freud's box terrier.

Aveline is what she is because it was right for the character, because of and despite player demand for “romance” and “non-romance” labels, categories that I have already said I despise because they restrict more than they benefit.

Besides, taking what players already have is easy. As a tool of manipulation, I much prefer "want."Posted Image

Aveline's fans have nothing to apologize for.

I agree. And like Bender says, we’re all jerks. Probably me especially. In my defense, it’s my job to approach the player as a character, and good stories aren’t about giving characters what they appear to want, good stories emerge when you hurt good characters in interesting ways. It certainly wasn’t my intent to insult anyone, especially not for wanting to connect emotionally with a character. Of course I want people to have an emotional reaction, what writer wouldn’t?

My frustration is with labels and expectations generated by the process, because I think that changes the experience more than anything I do or don’t write. Did you guys know there were romances in BG1? People were absolutely certain of this. There weren’t, not a “romance” character in the lot, not with the PC and not between NPCs. It was downright primitive, but because there also weren’t any “non-romance” labels, people made connections anyway, because nothing said it wasn’t possible, and nobody assumed that the interaction would be less deep because of it. They “wanted” and the game was better for it, even if there was no “having.”

There’re a lot of posts on the forum right now arguing about labels and what players were expecting. Romance, Sequel, Hours of play, RPG. If a player comes at any aspect of the game thinking “it can’t be good because it’s not X,” well, we might change their mind, but it’s hardly a level playing field. And I'm not suggesting that this is necessarily intentional, it's a natural reaction. I'm arguing the ideal, not the reality. That’s just what I believe dwelling on a label does, so I try to ignore them and encourage others to do so as well.

YMMV

Kylecouch, you sound very optimistic about your pessimism. ;)

I agree.

I just find it amusing that the theoretical follower he knows next to nothing about is evidently much better than the followers that were actually written which he hasn't yet seen. I suspect that, for some people, playing the actual game is neither preferable nor recommended-- they seem to be much happier where they are. Image IPB

Well, crap in a hat. Hey guys, I noticed a youtube vid of an Aveline dialogue that was missing a player choice and I was all WTF. Found the issue and put in a ticket for it to be patched (yes we will be patching, Mike said I could say that, no I don't know the date). It’s not a plot breaker and some players do see it, so I don’t know where it falls in priority. It's not even that noticeable it's missing unless you're me, I suppose, but it's a bonding moment I really liked so here’s the workaround for the meantime. Maybe OP can pin my shame to the first post:

Plot: The Captain's Condolences

Issue: This plot has one conversation. For some parties, 1 player choice is missing. I set a dialogue option to the “Follower” choice icon to call attention to it, but this has a built-in scripting check to see if that follower is in the party. Normally that would be critical, but in this instance it’s a home-base conversation with Aveline, so it removes the option unnecessarily if she’s not “in your party.”

Non-spoiler workaround: When you get this plot in Act 2, just have Aveline in your active party when you go talk to her in the barracks. So for that one conversation, second choice hub:
Aveline in your party = upper left option visible. Image IPB
Aveline not in party = upper left option not visible.Image IPB

If you're not there yet, there's a party picker close by so you can do a quick swap. If you played with Aveline consistently you probably saw it as intended and chose to take the option or not. Like I said it's not a plot breaker. It's just a solid bit of content that should have been available, so, yeah, Goddammit Anders me.Image IPB

Also, I posted elsewhere on the subject of gifts and shields.

Is it how to get her to tell Hawke the story about her father?  Because both times I've done that quest so far, she's offered to tell me and I just have 3 different ways of saying " No".

Yeah, that’s the one. If you have her in the party when you go to her home base, the option to keep on that topic should be available in the top left. Hoping I can get that addressed because, like I said, dammit Image IPB.

Actually, we were never even given Wesley's last name either.

Possibly doesn't have one. Most people in Ferelden don't.

The Aveline short story has wormed its way to the light, which mentions names and an eventful meeting.

It's in the codex, and happens in the three year gap between the end of act two and the beginning of act three. So yes, it just doesn't happen happen. You can't witness it.

Question, Aveline fans. I've heard that after All That Remains, Aveline can tell Hawke a story about her father when you next go see her. However, I've only had her offer, followed by three variations of responding with 'no'. Is that it, or is there some trick to getting more that I've overlooked?

Oh I see.

I didn't get a story, and I tend to replay conversations ad nauseam to see the different dialog options, however I might have still missed it, or missed some prior condition for it to show up.

It's a bug.
Short answer, my fault, but you can still get the option to appear if Aveline is in your active party when you go talk to her in her base for The Captain's Condolences

Long answer details are in this post earlier in this thread. I fixed it and it'll be going out in a patch, but for now, you'll have to be mindful of the workaround. Not what I wanted you thinking about in that moment, that's for sure.Image IPB

Ya know, if Aveline hauled off and decked Izzy after that, I'd consider that canon*.

*Okay, not canon. How about "hilarious".

How cute! Who made the cake?
Is that a lego Millennium Falcon behind her?

Don't know the name of the company that made the cake. Very cool. It had a mix of ME, SWtOR, and DA characters.
And nope, not a Falcon. Ebon Hawk, Normandy, and Serenity in that shot.

Just wanted to know if it is just me or did they change it? Does male Hawke still get the kiss from Aveline? Out of my 5 play throughs I still don't have any male Hawkes so I can't check myself.

It was sort of a bug. I say "sort of" because what actually happened was this:
I wrote two variations of the conversation, and then went to my beleaguered cine guy Ryan Ebenger and said "I did a low impact path and a more involved path (the kiss). What do you have time for?" And he looked at me bleary eyed and broken, because Aveline was the largest follower at that point. Which is why I assured him that the low impact branch was fine.

And then he went ahead and did both, because Ryan is a man who does not know the meaning of the word quit, or sleep. But, the linking was only partially functional because I never expected to get it. So long story short, after the patch the kiss is more sensibly gated by taking the flirt options during The Long Road, instead of just linking off the fall-through option out of the blue. Hope that helps.
