Just noticed that. Looks like a tuning fork.

Don´t want to know how often she catches her palms or fingers between that thing. I also thought that part of the blade piece of a sword was in the handle.

I hope she get's better armour quick, tanks need heavy or massive armour, not leather, light or medium >.<

Wild speculation:

I wonder if it's just a coincidence that she's equipped with a templar shield in that shot (random drop), or if it's her husband's, or if she joins the templars. That sword also looks very unique, come to think of it, and it looks different from the one she's holding in http://www.gamersdai...mp_jpgcopy.jpg. Plus, it's in her concept art. Wonder if that belonged to Wesley as well.

I'm thinking that's where her armor will come from. Either joining the Templars or from Wesley. (A quest to get it refitted, in the latter's case.)

Since this screenshot is from older build of the game it's possible they didn't have Aveline's sword modeled yet at that point and went with a placeholder, similar how they did so with Hawke's 2-hand sword.

We know Aveline makes it to kirkwall, so guesses start there.

If anything I could see her stepping on Chantry toes if they try to pull anything at the cost of protecting innocents.

Someone that doesn't care for foolishness sounds very prone to be self-righteous to me. As she would decide what is foolish and not.

I knew I'd forgotten something.
If she starts out with it, then how about wild speculation 2: it belonged to her chevalier father. I mean, not even Varric's got his concept drawn with his named crossbow. /end wild speculation

Or it could just be a random sword they decided to draw her with. Seeing as how weapons are changeable and all. I'll be speculating about whether those bracers hold any special significance for her next *facepalm.

So her father was Orlesian? (purly a guess since he was a Chevalier).

Well, that does explain why he named his daughter after Aveline Knight of Orlais.

Just like I knew my main party in DA before the game came out (Alistair, Leliana, Morrigan), It looks like I now know my main party for DA2 (Aveline, Isabela, Bethany).
