Wow, I go to work for a few hours and come back to a thread where... Some people got the idea that this was a feminist thread.

If you read the original post, you can see for yourself that it's no where near being a feminist thread. It's just a request. A small, simple request, by a female gamer who plays female characters in games.

I really don't understand why some people are so offended by the request, or feel that they need to make rude comments about it in general. I never said or implied in the original post that I wanted Dragon Age 2 changed or turned into a feminist game. All I asked for was that in a future Dragon Age game that the portrayed canon character be a female. Because, wouldn't that be neat? Wouldn't that be different? It would just be a nice change of pace.

And it doesn't warrant being verbally attacked. I would hope that we're all mature adults around here, so let's act like it, please.

And I'll add this:

Dragon Age was the first game I've played where I actually felt like I could roleplay as an actual female character (unlike a Fallout 3/Oblivion where character gender selection feel hollow because it makes no real difference outside appearance.) Bioware deserves high praise for spending the time and money creating that possibility. My great experience with DA:O got me to buy Mass Effect 1 & 2, so in my case anyway that time and effort spent helped your bottom line.
It would be nice to see the female character options in ads or trailers or somewherePosted Image.
Perhaps a little ad space would attract even more of women like me who simply don't realize the option Bioware spent all of that effort and $$ on is there.

It's late/early so I hope that made sense.

/delurk

I agree. I bought DAO on a whim after looking at the Blood Dragon cover.  I never played a Bioware game before and had very low expectations I'd even like the game.

Every other game before made choosing a gender a mere novelty and not an experience in its own right.  Even the in re-make of Dragon Quest IV the developer couldn't be bothered to change Eliza's dialogue. Yet they have both Heroes on the cover.

I talked to three separate guys at three separate places a couple weeks ago. They were all surprised that me, a girl, played video games. (One guy even said, "Sorry, I can't believe I'm having a conversation with a woman about video games.") I think there are still some preconceptions that girls just don't play video games, and I'm certain these prejudices contributes to an under-represented gaming demographic.
That's not to say that there are no strong women within video games, but they do take second-place toward men. Legend of Zelda; Half-Life; Devil May Cry; Mario; Final Fantasy (although there's been at least 2 female leads out of 13 main games). The only strong female protagonists who take the lead in a game (that I remember) are Samus Aran and Alex Roivas (Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem). And maybe Polka and Viola from Eternal Sonata.
I was happy to hear that BioWare's games allowed me to play as a girl; if not to appeal to women gamers, it at least allows for replayability. Requesting that BioWare put their female lead on equal footing with their male lead is simply that--a request. And it's being requested because BioWare has already made giant leaps in the right direction for female gamers.

Ah, and I leave this overnight, and I think the only arguement I've not
heard yet is the "This woman is expressing an opinion I
dissagree with. She is obviously menstruating, therefore I can dismiss
her entire arguement." one, which seems to rear it's head anytime the
female fans say anything. :P

I have a teenage brother. He's straight. He and his friends are very interested when boobs and sex are in anyway implied, and are quite concerned with their manliness. Yet they love the Alien films, and Terminator 2. A strong female lead in those films did not make them cower in fear for their manliness.

I think most of the posters in this thread have been reasonable, except a few trolls who either can't understand reasonable requests like your OP, or do understand, but are so miserable that they take pleasure in trying to aggravate other people.  At this point, unless they're going to try to talk about the subject without hurling insults or resorting to faulty logic, it's best to ignore them.  I wouldn't be surprised if they're just posting nasty things with the intention of getting this thread locked.

I think Atlus did a wonderful job with not only creating a female player for Person 3 Portable but also integrating her into the story and not making her seem like an afterthought. I haven't finished the game and there were a few hiccups in the first few hours of the game (forgetting to change he to she in some early dialogue) but the story felt so much different than when I played as the male character. She actually felt like... well a teenage girl. It was very cool how the interactions with different classmates played out. It was wonderful to see it from a completely different viewpoint. I think they totally hit a home run. I would be wonderful to see if they could do the same with Person 4. The children in that game had lots of issues and I’d love to see a female’s prospective of the TV murders.

you know, i never actually felt like i was playing a woman whenever i made a female PC in DA:O... there's a difference on how i am treated, but not to how i react to things...

doing exclusive responses for the females (besides seduction) would add a bit more personality (even with the subtle things DA:O had, like "i'm the bravest one here and i'm a woman"response)... so yeah, that should be encouraged...

and actually, i'd like to see a cinematic commercial with a savvy lady playing badass against the darkspawn.... who wouldn't?

I agree I would like to see some female Hawke or at least maybe a female lead maybe DA3. I generally only play females (unless I don't have a choice) and would love to see a kickass female lead. That makes me happy! ^_^

I'm trying a male character right now in DA:O, because I was told that you get a more in-depth perspective on Morrigan if you have a relationship with her, and I wanted to see how that differed from the female relationship.

Most of it is actually people, men and women alike, supporting the idea. There's just some who have misunderstood the OP and thought it was about feminism.

True. There are people like that around here who would do such a thing. But the majority of posters have been polite and sincere, and I appreciate that far more than I am bothered by the trollers.

So thank you, polite people! <3

Girl scouts taught me some really strong knots when I was a wee thing. Can I help? ;)

And I think this was a great thread. Just a simple screen shot, like the one where Bro Hawke is close to the camera with Beth behind him during dialogue, so we could get a good look at her face. If they really are working with the female and male models equally and in tandem, then she should already be done and waiting to be shown.

That makes sense. I never felt like I was a man when I played a male character in a game, because I can't relate to him. I'm trying a male character right now in DA:O, because I was told that you get a more in-depth perspective on Morrigan if you have a relationship with her, and I wanted to see how that differed from the female relationship.

As a male who predominantly, if not exclusively, plays female characters (what can I say, I oddly find it easier to RP as the opposite gender, go figure), I actually think the perspective you get as a female PC befriending Morrigan is deeper than if you romance her but that just might be me. Her romance gets interesting at the end, though, I actually find it most satisfying to befriend her up until her 'Tis a curious thing' speech and then kick-start the relationship there. But that's mainly because I find her question/confession at the end of that dialogue more sincere than her earlier romance-triggers. And then you can get all the romance-only dialogues after that.

I find it difficult to play male PCs in DA, strange I know, but there it is.

Some guys pay good money for that kind of thing :)

Anyway, having different box covers might be expensive - it's been done before as a slight gimmick, usually to promote faction choice as a major thing in the game.  In Black & White, the choice was good vs evil, and that was a major feature in the game. There was a Star Wars game (I forget which one, maybe one of the Jedi Knight games) that shipped with a Rebel Alliance or Empire box cover, and the morality slider was a big thing in that game.  I doubt they'll want to make the gender choice that significant.

But there's no reason they couldn't show a female Hawke on the game's homepage, or something like that.

(BTW, all women in the game should be made to wear the mage hats, regardless of class)

*runs like hell*

First off, I'd like to say that this is all just my completely bias opinion. Excuse me if I get a little long-winded or sound ranty. I certainly don't mean for any of this to come off as aggressive.

When given the choice, I prefer to play female characters. I also prefer to customize appearance, but not having those options won't keep me from trying, liking, or loving a given game. I also like being able to choose if my girl is the kind of girl who'll wear sexy armor, or if she's more of a pragmatic girl when it comes to coverage. I don't think chainmail bikinis should be outlawed, as long as there's a full plate mail option too.

All that to say, I like having selection, and options. I can't imagine a games like this don't go out of their way to promote these assets by having a marketing campaign that shows both. I would love to see equal representation of fem/male Hawke in the trailers and posters, because I honestly think it would be more fun, and reach a larger audience. People who are just taking a cursory glance at press releases or posters may not be aware that you can chose your gender. And that may loose some potential clients that you could have reached with a mixed gender campaign.

I'm not horrified or offended that Lady Hawke's been omitted, but I think it would be nothing but gravy to have her in there, showcasing Hawke in another light.

That being said, I really think that Bioware has already gone en extra mile for female gamers- we have equal opportunities to romance, and kick ass, and there's remarkable diversity in the kind of females represented. They're also included bisexuals (but no 100% homosexuals yet), and diverse ethnic groups.

I'm also thrilled to hear that Bioware is taking the time to make sure the female body looks and reacts more like a realistic female animation. Maybe one day we'll have an option of different body types for both male and female- one thin/wiry athletic, a built/robust, and a buxom/sexy, but I think we're still a ways off from that.

Out of all the developers out there, they are so close to a homogenized sense of individual equality... they just need to go a little further.

I agree with your statement but if some people aren't going to take the time to pay attention to detail then not being aware is their fault and should not be blamed on the company.
