Nobody knows the numbers exactly, and youll never get Bioware or EA to admit ME2 was a disappointment for them from a sales perspective.

However, one this is clear. ME2 was a hugely hyped, massively overrated game that turned out to be nowhere near a top 10 release game. Just because we dont know the exact numbers doesnt mean we cant see that ME2 just cant compete with titles like Red Dead Redemption for example.

Youd think with all that mainstream dumbing down they did, they wanted success that was appraoching that level, but I guess we wont know for certain.

Still, they are clearly very proud of the host of unprofessional perfect scores the game receieved from "professional critics", giving them an "epic" metacritic score at least.

I agree over hype for it felt shallow compared to the first game.

Characters in the Citadel where more robotic and less animated, more clipping on characters like Rex, side missions where not as memorable, and a few other story and character interactions.

This game was marketed heavily, yet it sill didnt sell.
I think a release on the ps3 is a contingency plan in case of dissopointing sells. Mass effct 2 only pulled in 1.90 mil while ea might have been expecting 3 mil
just for the icening on the cake it sold less than mass effect 1 yet was higher rated the truth is "xbox fanboys" would rather play cod than a enjoy a great story.

And ea is all about sales.

Except that it did sell. Exceptionally well.

Learn how the world market ACTUALLY works instead of just quoting random figures you've probably made up.

Honestly I dont put any reliance on vgcharts. They have outright said, they make their numbers up. That said, I think ME2 was a complete success. Hell on steam (PC) it is still top 3 on the RPG games, minus the specials and all. Especially with the economy the way it is (in the crapper) it fared well. I just cant understand the people who hated the game and want it to fail out of principal. Cant you just be happy for Bioware?

Well, if you look at it this way, Mass Effect players are usually more mature while COD players are usually whiny 14 year olds trying to hack the game by getting into tenth prestige lobbies, and people who say they are gamers yet only play Modern Warfare 2. I will admit I use to love Modern Warfare 2, until the developers decided not to update anything at all, now I mostly just play the Mass Effect series and the Orange Box (also not updated, but all classes are equal, it actually needs skill to be played.) Either way I am not against the Idea of having a new console for Mass Effect to be on, I just hope that the moderators create separate forums for Xbox users and PS3 users (we don't need a separate one for PC, we don't fight at all with them) or else it will be a total fan boy war between the two consoles. As far as the sales go, I wish I had an extra 2 million dollars in my pocket. Besides, you can't expect to do overly good in this economy.

Mass Effect 1 has been out for nearly three years.

Mass Effect 2 hasn't even been out a single year.

It seems the only person not pulling in the numbers is you, OP.

Neither of the ME games are blockbusters. We should just be happy that they sell enough to warrant sequels. It would be terrible for ME to go the "beyond good and evil" way.

It's funny how some of my friends refuse to play "because there's too much talking in it", while the others say "there's too much shooting in it".

lol mass effect 2 sold ~2 mil on the xbox 360 alone and is not a success? take your meds yet or perhaps you work for a rival publisher?

mass effect 2 was the 2nd best selling game from EA this year, and in the top 10(9th) for all titles during the first 3 months(jan-march), the release date being the END of jan. so even losing about a month of sales on the list, it still broke into top 10! and that's not even counting sales on the pc (digital distrubition/retail). ofcourse mass effect 2 is being ported to the ps3 to get more sales. why have a successful product and keep it on a select part of the market? maximize profits and make it avail for everyone!

THANK YOU

by the time ME3 comes along. ME2 will have caught or at least be close to ME1. ME1 probably had about 1.9mil six months after release anyway, so they are probably on par. BUT NOT REALLY!

because me1 was 360 only for a while, then PC

me2 was 360 and PC concurrently, so it would be interesting to see the PC sales

ME was always planned for a PS3 release after EA bought Bioware. Try and fit the pieces together moron.

Mass Effect 1 sold around 400k copies more than Mass Effect 2, yet it would seem Mass Effect 2 was more heavily advertised. 1.9million certainly is not a bad number, but comparing to how much 1 sold with less advertising makes 2 seem to be a bit of a disappointment in terms of sales.

Of course, you have to factor in the pact that 1 was out longer than 2....But I think EA was hoping it'd outsell 1 pretty quickly, and not be so far behind after all this time.

Especially considering the preoders of fans of the first game and the goal to convince new players to try the franchise...
The demo that came out months after the release didnt make sense if the things worked as hoped.

I looked it up and the sales for ME2 are not bad. They're just not terribly epic. It is EAs second best selling game of this year so if they can boost the numbers with a PS3 release it is just good business.

Meanwhile Blizzard put ME2 sales on the pocket in 48 hours.

And only for PC.

Red Dead Redemption is a Joke compared to Mass Effect 2. Sales do not reflect what the best game is. I would rather run around as Commander Shepard any day compared to a Dried out cowboy with a very poorly developed backstory

OMG ME2 ISNT A FINACIAL FAILURE....first off an rpg selling 1.90 copies on xbox alone is quite good..the pc version sold great to it probally has sold 1.50 copies on pc..so ME2 has probbaly sold close to 3 million copies and it CONTINUES to sell little by little. PLUS..the game SHIPPED 2 million copies in its first week..so the game has REALLY sold 5 million copies..and the ps3 version will probally sell another million..PLUS ME1 is selling again becuz of ME2..and do people not rember bioware ENTHUSINASTICLY praiseing us for making their game A SUCCESS..theres also the dlc sales n merchandise..i can garentee ya bioware has made over 300 million dollars off mass effect 2..is that really a failure i think not

So I take it Modern Warfare 2 didn't do too hot either?

Keep in mind, ME2 was also sold on Steam and they do not publish their sales figures.

Gotta disagree with you there, Red Dead was great. I don't know what you mean by "poorly developed backstory". Did you actually play the whole game? If so, you would have seen that while the details were spare early on in the game, Marston became much more fleshed out later. It was a unique storytelling style for a videogame, which may be why some don't like it.

It did sell alot more than Mass Effect 2, not to equate sales with quality, but it did have the advantage of being multiplatform on day 1.

ME2 sold very well, for Bioware's standards.....but EA believes that every one of their games needs to sell 10 million.

We all knew that when EA bought Bioware, it was always going to be about sales, sales, sales, even at the expense of quality. I don't really mind that aspect since it's a business and still about money, but the point is that when it was just Bioware running the show, 3 million sales was a phenomenal feat for them and would generate a ton of revenue.....but since they're now a part of EA, they must share the wealth with EA as a whole, and therefore that 3 million looks like small potatoes and unacceptable, since EA puts out so many other crappy products, they need blockbusters like ME2 to pick up the slack.

well fable is for more casual players..so more people play it. and yes ea sucks at advertising. either way mass effect 2 was very succesful..and i remeber when the game was released ea and bioware BOTH were very satisfied with sales. dragon age was also very succesful it sold 5 million copies. i beiive dragon age 2 may get close to selling 7 maybe 8 million copies..but not 10 million..same for ME3 i belive it will reach maybe 5 or 6 million copies...on the other hand the old republic may reach 10 million..but it would take a while. i think by the end of next year the old republic will have about 2 million users online.
