The basis of cognitive neuroscience is that the mind is what the brain does.  If you're a monist and a scientific thinker, it follows that the underpinnings the mind are fundamentally the same thing--neural patterns.  You could crudely say that the limbic system handles emotion, the prefrontal cortex deals with logic, motor learning automates learned actions, etc.  But such a crude construction also ignores all the research about how interconnected and interdependent these different parts of the brain are.  Physical instincts feed into emotional needs, which in turn influence the prefrontal cortex's decisions, and all these things are inextricably linked to one another; they cannot exist without each other in normal human functioning.

I have no problem with attractiveness in games.  Like I said, I thoroughly enjoyed games like Bayonetta and Tomb Raider, partially for how straight-up ballsy the fanservice was, and how the devs had the decency not to try and hide it as anything other than what it was.  And I'd be a baldfaced liar if I said I didn't enjoy fanservice for the ladies.  But I don't think it's the most important part of RPG characters.  People continue to obsess over Morrigan not because of her looks, but because she hit an emotional nerve and left them hanging.

How is a shot of her 2m away with mist in her face a good angle? Or a shoot of her cheek?

And no she is not pretty by a long shot  
Kinda hard to make someone ugly while they are standing in a mist cloud/ not even looking at the camera

So, what, are we all going to start pulling out degrees here?  I *do* have mine in psychology ... but since you said "roughly" it seems pointless to pursue that issue further. (besides which, if we want to discuss the intricacies of Psychology and/or neuropsychology there are better places to take that)

And, really, since the vast majority of people do respond well to physical beauty this is an easy way to help establish the baseline for relationships in a game.  Especially since, typically, people are more likely to assume an attractive individual will also be more capable and charismatic, if you want to make a character immediately appealing beauty is your best bet. 

That said, I - at least - pay as much attention to personality in computer games since the artificial nature of the characters means that their physical attraction is less immediate a concern.  If the character were outright repulsive it would be difficult to spend enough time in game to even get to know them - but so long as they are marginally good looking it isn't an obstacle.

Elizabeth I didn't defeat the Spanish Armada, her sailors and bad weather did. Just so you know. But that's irrelevant.

In the real world you have gorgeous women hanging off every two bit rapper and dime store actor. Are you saying that it's unrealistic for the most important man in the world to have his pick of women? Ever hear of harems and concubines and so forth?
