it's yet another manifestation of the hypocrisy born of religious superstitions. somehow in their infantile minds showing 95% of a breast in a combat environment is fine, but that same breast must be 50% covered in a sexual situation.
the american theocracy has deemed sex too powerful for all children and most adults to cope with on their own without strict guidance. be thankful they enjoy making up your mind for you.
Yes... that's exactly it... a theocracy. Because this is exactly like forcing women to completely cover themselves in public.

Movies suffers the same treatment.. show ******--> "Woa, I can never bring my 12 years old to see this movie..."
Now, DAO is a mature game, meaning you should not play it if less than 16 over the US... well if seeing ****** and nipples can corrupt some 16 year old (and over) mind, I feel sorry for them, because they will probably never be able to grow up sanely in this world that offer far more sneacky ways to "rot a good soul".
Anyway, to summarize: cultural taboos and total hypocrisy, fed and driven by a bunch of stupidly conservative lobbyist, leads to inconsistent rating practices.

Bioware (before the EA merger anyways) was a Canadian company and Canada has a different attitude on nudity and sex in general then the USA. Our TV stations run prime time shows with nudity if they wish (CBC does it all the time, others not as much but option is always there, unlike the big American networks) and here in Ontario females do not have to cover themselves if they wish on places like beaches and suntanning.
Now Bioware in Edmonton which is way more conservative (please note, huge difference between a Canadian Conservative and American Republican) then anywhere else in Canada (hehe, one of the things I like about that neck of the woods) but its still not as censor driven as normal USA standards.
Just thought id mention that as some projecting American values on a Canadian company. In many ways we are the same, but in this topic we far more related to England then America.
I imagine it was the ratings sadly.
/shrug,
not a big deal, just was curious is all.
Not to open a whole new can of worms but it strikes me as strange that a company that willingly puts homosexuality in their games takes such a weaker stance on frontal nudity.
If I had to choose which would be the easier fight, Id have to say the nudity in general.
Thats just how it seems to me tho!

When you have sex with the desire demon, does it show anything?
This is why I dont understand the sex scenes being so censored!
Others right, probably is the ratings.

You can show ****** in "R" rated films but not in a "M" rated game. Go figure.
No, you can, but it has far more to do with the context and content of the rest of the game than it does if there are ****** or not.
I have a feeling Bioware was pushing pretty close to the top of the M scale anyway, as I'm sure the ESRB was just as concerned with the fact that you can kill a child in the game than if there were ******.
Plus, putting ****** in your game isn't worth the PR ****storm that happens when the soccer moms find that their M-rated game they bought for their 12 year old isn't intended for kids.

LOL, actually you can have breif nudity in a PG film, doesnt need to be R rated
But yes, with amount of violence and even demon nudity currently in this game, it would get a R rating as a film!
HMMMMM, Dragon Age: Origins, the film!
Id buy the DVD

However, naked people tend to be a more 'acceptable' to show than naked people 'doing business' so to speak, ratings wise.

Also, don't forget the stupid brouhaha the Mass Effect "naked alien sex" scene caused among the "family values" set.
Bioware was probably a bit touchy from that, i'd think.
This. Also, the Mass Effect scene is kinda dark and not very detailed. For all that Dragon Age covers the nipples and the junk, it's a lot more detailed and explicit just in terms of the lighting.
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure I want to see rendered junk. Or nipples. Just for aesthetic concerns--the sex scenes can be cringe-worthy enough without the guys' CGI lampposts being shown.

I don't think this is a Bioware issue at all.
And Kalfear, I'm also Canadian, and while you're right that we don't really care much about that stuff up here, our games are all rated using the ESRB, and the United States are, unfortunately, still the lion's share of any market. Bioware may be comprised of a bunch of Canadians who think it's utterly silly, but they're selling the game into a market where a big enough morality scare can chase off a big chunk of business.
They were as risky as they could be, and kudos for that.

come to denmark, our government and church system doesn't even pay any mind to film and game ratings whatsoever. freespeech covers more than just speech but forms of expression, which this goes under.Rhazesx wrote...
Deal with customers asking mature questions like this or deal with a Crusade lead by Bill Oreilly and Faux news? Easy choice for them. Unfortunately in our country the theocracy always wins with little to no resistance.
that's why we got **** with the muslims for the Muhammed drawings, our government doesn't have the right to apologuise on a citizens behalf if he himself wont, so they're marked for death by terrorists.
anyway, over here there's no big deal, actually no deal at all. no one notices games any more.no "game related" violence or whatever, blame the game is an unknown concept and i love it.
Bioware, you can always sell 100,000 copies in denmark, whatever the content.

It's mainly an American thing, extremely afraid on nipples on the media.... god knows why, we all had a pair to grab for milk when we were kids anyway.
Actually, some Americans want to make breast-feeding illegal. At least in public.
Because you know, there is nothing more shameful and sinful than a woman and her child.
...idiots.

First; Lets try not to paint the citizens of this country with the same brush. There is no category for "Americans" we do not think the same way, we do not vote the same way, we do not act the same way. Please do not treat us as if we are all the same.
Second; It is worth pointing out that we currently have the most liberal government top to bottom we have ever had. There are no "god fearing bible thumpers" in the majority. This has nothing to do with religion or morals.
Third; the real problem is not the church, or "republicans." Neither of those two entities currently has any power here AT ALL. The real problem is that the press and the government (at all levels) are so cravenly PC that they are afraid to fart because it might contribute to "global warming." It is not conservatism. We haven't had that here since the 80's, it went out with hair bands (I do miss the hair bands though). Our problem, and frankly the problem with a lot of countries is the PC movement. Which, in my opinion is likely to cause the downfall of society. People need to HTFU and just deal.

I have to agree with this part, sex scenes are a bit silly anyway in games. They went a little too serious with it here for my taste. Come to think of it, it'd be more entertaining if the game character leads their partner back to the tent and then it proceeds to show the reactions of the rest of the companions outside hehe. Sort of like Leliana's song
Of course I also think everyone besides the dog should be romanceable. A shale romance followed by a splat, game over, reload would be pretty entertaining.

This right here is it actually, it's the Sex portion combined with nudity that kicks it, they covered up the nudity in Mass Effect and the Soccer Moms with too much time on their hands got rilled up over it. That whole M for Mature thing people just seem to ignore it seems.
Yep, the state of the world as is means people can call something marketed for mature audiences corrupting because they are failing at their parenting and not paying attention to rating systems. Don't want you kid seeing graphic violence and sexual themes? Don't give them the game/tv show/movie that's clearly labeled to be improper for people below an age limit.
It really is atrocious how much people get away with blaming others for their own ignorance.
State of the US, really.
Europe? Boobs everywhere. Even in Australia you'll see plenty of nipple on the beaches.
It just seems to be the US that has this odd "Decapitations are okay, but do not dare show a nipple!" idea. Like I tell people who pay Australia out about it's convict heritage, I tell them I'd rather convicts than puritans.
Puritans arrived in America... they knelt and prayed.
Convicts arrived in Australia... they broke open the rum and had a boozed up orgy (yes, really).
Frankly, people need to realise that there's nothing wrong with nudity, especially in a Mature game (MA15+ restricted in Australia, highest rating we have for video games... and frankly I'd like an R18+ rating).
