You have a family.  And they're alive and stuff.  And there's presumably more of them alive in Kirkwall.  Living.  And that's why you're headed to Kirkwall--to reunite with your supposedly alive family.

...

WIGGITY WHAAA??  You're a video game protagonist!  Why do you have a large, extended living family like most normal people?  Why do you have more than one sibling?  What is this tomfoolery?

In all seriousness, DA2 might be the first RPG I've played where so many family members are present.  We have Hawke, Carver, Mum, Bethany, and extended family in Kirkwall, which sparks the whole "going to Kirkwall" plot.  Weird.  And at least one of our family members has to stick around after the initial darkspawn stabbity.  The IGN article said that four out of the six starting characters made it.

The six characters would presumably be Hawke, Carver, Mum, Bethany, Avelline, and Westley.  We know Hawke has to live--please don't pull the resurrection thing again, BioWare.  That means two of the NPC companions dies, but even if it's family, we've still got one of 'em left.  And plenty more in Kirkwall.

There has to be a reason why BioWare gave Hawke so many family members.  Most fiction in general, never mind RPGs, disposes of them as quickly as possible because they're an inconvenience to the writers.  The only BioWare game I can think of where family was actually important was Baldur's Gate, and that was a very unique case.  Thoughts?

Huh? I bet most of them will die in the first few hours.

Anyway are you forgetting the Human Noble origin? You had a father, mother, brother ...

Who were all obviously redshirts, I agree.  But DA2 also has other familial ties beyond the potential red/mauve shirts; your extended family is in Kirkwall.  That's WHY YOU'RE GOING in the first place.  There's more to it than just seeing your family die, or at least I hope.

Frankly, even Hawke him/herself is surprised by his/her vast and living collection of relatives. Every couple of hours, Hawke approaches the nearest family member, and holds them. Just to make sure they're still there.

Right, taking bets now on which ones are going to get offed.

So it's different. Who cares? Different is good anyway.

Family is only a burden on a writer if said family gets in the way of the story. Maybe they're just carrots on a stick and when Hawke shows up they are dead or have moved away, or were never there at all. Maybe they pull a Goldanna.

Actually, your brother survived to the end of the game.

Side quest - Little Timmy, your cousin, is being picked on bullies. What do you do?

1. Talk them down?
2. intimidate them?
3. Set them on fire?

Yes I absolutely love this idea because it can add a bunch of drama. DAO's cast was like a little dysfunctional family. This time it will actually be one.

Only siblings tend to survive in family stories, though. Even then it's a low %.

But wasn't present--these family members look to be there.

4. Rip them apart limb from limb using crazy blood magic.

As for the family. If they survive the flight from Lothering then I can imagine them cropping up over the years, with your actions having an impact on their lives as well.

I hope Carver survives, it would be nice to have a brother whu isn't trying to kill me or disappears into a forest for most of the game

I never said there was anything wrong with different; it's just that generally, writers dispense with family for sake of ease.  But you're right; it could add a lot of cool drama to DA2. Nice to see them breaking the mold.  I think thus far, the announcement that you have family is the only one that hasn't made me nudge my female mage Hawke toward greater heights of evil Magnificent Bastardry.

It'd also be cool if they had actual conflicts within your family.  In the few cases we've had where the PC has living relatives, they all get along splenderiffically and attend barbeques and sing songs together.  Real families are not that idyllic.

I have to admit, I hope both siblings survive. It would be nice having companions who've known you for a long time.

God I hope not.  Been there, done that, rinse lather repeat.  If BioWare are going to use family members in plot/character arcs, they could at least do it in a marginally less cliched way.  I did the Imoen thing, and while I love Imoen, my female mage Hawke would sooner chop off her own feet than go through all that hell for anyone, even her sister.

Well if you and your family escape Lothering, it can build a stronger bond between them.
But the situation there in is also very stressfull most people they knew died, they lost there home, so everyone is on edge and a lot can go wrong when someone (probably Hawke) says or does the wrong things.

That would be great if you could have family feudes especially in reaction to Hawke's decisions made throughout the game, I guess it might be alot like the conflicts caused with companions in DA:O but its definitly more realistic if someone holds you even somewhat accountable for your actions. Besides everyone has to admit dysfunctional families are more entertaining.

Somehow I got the feeling Bethany isn't your real sister, I mean in the IGN article it is mentioned she is an Apostate. Maybe Hawkes mother took her in because she felt sorry for her?

How does it follow that because she's an apostate, she isn't your sister?   Your sister could very well be an apostate because your parents sheltered her from the Circle and managed to do it in a not-Isolde-fail sort of way.
