It has been confirmed that the Qunari have Mages.
There tongues are cut out and they are leashed.

Now, the Qunari in the trailer seemed able to create a shield to stop Hawke's fire attack.
Was he a mage? He only seemed to growl and roar at Hawke, but then again when your trying to kill each other there isn't much time for small talk is there?

So I have another theory.
Like Templars some Qunari specialize in nullifying spells.

The so called 'Templar Qunari' are called mage handlers, or avaraad in the Qunari tongue.

The figures in the back are comfirmed to be mages. The figure in the front is a avaraad,he seems to be holding a collar or the Viscount's crown (Thank you for noticing that Inside_Joke).

He appears to have a tongue to me...so...I don't know. Maybe you're right, and he can nullify magic.

I was thinking he was Tal'Vashoth when I saw the trailer; one who got away before he was put on a leash.

He looks pretty bored in that picture.

If he can nullify magic how did he learn it?
I mean Allister say you don't need lyrium to become a templar, but I doubt the Chantry will teach a Qunari Templar skills.

Well, the templars had to learn it somehow...who's to say that qunari didn't learn the same tricks? And they indoctrinate other cultures, so it's not unreasonable to think so.

Well, they did take over the Free Marches before, and Kirkwall is ruled by Templars in Hawke's time.
It could be they took some Templar initiates (is that the right word?) before the Exalted March drove them out.

What the qunari did in the trailer looks a lot like the cleanse area skill from DA:O.

Judging by how the Qunari look at magic, I wouldn't be surprised if they had certain warriors who were even more adept at interrupting spells than the templars. Who says the templars were the first to practice their abilities?

Then maybe he is a Tal'Vashot...
But since he still has his tongue he was probably born among them.

Yes, but that removed debuffs and buffs from your party, not got rid of a DPS spell, IIRC. Right?

Well he did do it during the time Hawke shot the fire out of his staff thingie. And it sounded like a burst noise with a blast of air so to speak afterwards. Could be possible as Hawke then got smacked around.

Wow, I've watched the trailer three times and didn't catch that.  DERPDERPDERP. Unobservant Sable is unobservant.

I suppose it might make good sense to teach qunari fighting other cultures anti-magic techniques.  If you bring Sten to the Circle and talk to him about mages, you can get some very bitter comments on the Tevinters' use of magic against his people.  Probably after their first taste of Circle magic, they started teaching "templar" techniques to more of their own.

The abilities aren't limited to templars after all.  Mages can learn Mana Drain, Mana Clash, and other spell-nullifying techniques too.

Not the same one, but he does have similar chest markings.

Also, either the horns are grossly overexaggerated, grossly underexaggerated, or they come in different lengths.

EDIT: Maybe they grow with age? Maybe they are the same, but at different time periods.

The War Paint on his chest is probably to show his class as Templar/Mage Hunter.
And the lenght of the horns might show his rank as Templar/Mage Hunter. Since Qunari with no horns are considerd rare and intemedating I'm guessing bigger horns are lower ranks.

@ OP: I hadn't even thought of that when I saw the trailer. Nice catch. It'd be nice to get a dev response on this.

I'd say he has some from of Templar ablities.

The markings on his body signify a high rank, if I recall correctly, and given how Qunari "raise" children I suppose its possiblehe was a handler that showed skill and was given command.

I mean you would expect handlers to have such ablities as Templars, in one form or another. They need such skills so sooner or later such skills would arise. If not the Qunari would be unable to control mages.

Maybe it is some kind of Templar-like ability, but it would also be possible he used some kind of magical item. Like a Fire Resistant Ring or something, if not I guess he would've done the same Templar-like ability when he was shot a lightning bolt.

So the markings probably stand for mage handler, well that does explain his templar like abbileties

Most horns do. I assume that it has to do with how old you would be.

Yes, bigger horns are probably signs of age (and experience).
Also, Hornless Qunari are meant for greatness, at least thats what some of the devs say.
So... What happens when a Hornless Qunari is a mage? Will he be treated as a dog like the rest? Or will he be treated differently?

It is a sign of it, not a guarantee. They'd get the same treatment.
