Those are mages
I want to know why they have masks on.
Is there some reason for it?

They aren't seen as being people. Perhaps the masks are there to reduce any chance their handlers would have empathy for them?
it thinks it's more of a counter measure against demons, when demons possess something they will try to negotiate with mortals in order for them to get what they want so putting a mask, cutting off the tongue and chaining the hands behind their backs would prevent any kind of communication should the qunari be possessed.

True, but tongues only get cut out when a mage is possesed by a demon. Or if a Qunari Mage performs 'forbidden magic' why he needs his tongue for it I don't know. Maybe they have magic that requires speech?nightcobra8928 wrote...

I'm sorry but where was it confirmed the masked soldiers are mages? >_>
Gaider confirmed it in the original thread (about the picture). I don't have the quote handy, so you'd have to take my word for it I guess.

And when someone asked 'Who the hunched characters in the back are'.
A dev said that they where saarebas, Qunari mages.

I thought they all had their tongues cut out? Do you have a reference for that?

After re-reading Mary's post I'm not sure if only those possesed by a demon get their tongues cut out or all of them like you said.

Although the Dragon Age wiki says they do,read the Society section.

Yes that does make more sense.Drazlol wrote...
all mages get their tongues cut out so incase a demon possesses them they can't corrupt others. cutting off the tongue of a possessed mage is too late.
But when does a mage get its tongue cut out? As soon as it shows sign of magic?
Or is there a particular age it is done?

It isn't clear yet when Qunari get their tongues cut out. Some say they all get their tongues got out before something happens. Others says it is after being possesed by a demon, or when they are using 'forbidden magic'.marbatico wrote...
a mage gets it tongue cut out for using 'forbidden magic', what ever that is to the quanari.

Only you say that. They KILL you if you become an abomination.
Forbidden magic is anything that they don't get told to do by their handler.

So once they lose their tongue, all the handler can say is "bad saarebas, no biscuit"?
